Their investments on the pitching side (Bassitt, Berríos, Kikuchi) have been up-and-down but Gausman has worked beautifully. Bichette in the second round in their first draft year is a huge win for the scouting staff
4:32
Pretty good job overall

Stroman is hurt, Smyly is ineffective, Taillon has improved but is far from a sure thing, and even Ben Brown is on the IL at AAA. How can I improve the Cubs rotation at this point after not doing so at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
4:34
Mostly just have to hope Stroman comes back quickly and Smyly finds it. Can give Wesneski another rotation look but there's a reason he lost the spot in the first place

thats a hat I thought but are corrasco and crew plus the middling amount the Astros and rangers took 100m?
Anthony Franco
4:37
Arb class is about $25MM. Roughly $11MM on Scherzer, $17.5MM on JV, $14MM on Carrasco, $10MM on Robertson, $10MM on Escobar, $13MM on Canha, $6MM on Pham
It adds up quick

The Cardinal's offense is fine. I don't see them signing Nola (hope I'm wrong), and I don't think they should sign Urias. Sign Sonny Gray, and trade some OF depth this winter? What's your take on what it'll take? (Keeping Gorman, Walker and Winn) And do you believe they'll TRULY change trajectory on the pitch to contact weak sauce they've been rolling out yearly?
Anthony Franco
4:39
Drew Rom's got pretty good swing-and-miss numbers. I imagine he'll get a look late this summer. They'll keep trotting Liberatore out there but I'm not super optimistic on that one
4:41
They'll probably need two starters in free agency. Guessing that's a shot on a Paxton or Montas type -- upside but injury risk -- and then someone a little more traditionally Cardinals like Gray

Will the tigers bring up Justyn-Henry Malloy and/or Parker Meadows by the end of the season?
Anthony Franco
4:42
I'd be surprised if we don't see them both, Malloy especially. They've been really committed to slow-playing them but we're nearing the point at which they brought up Carpenter and Kreidler last summer

Taking over as the top lefty in the DBacks’ pen, does Kyle Nelson get any saves?
Anthony Franco
4:43
Doubt it. He's their best left-on-left matchup guy and they traded for Sewald

4:43
Any chance Tristan Beck joins the Giants’ rotation? Deep NL only roto, does he make a decent pickup?
Anthony Franco
4:45
They've got a decent amount of rotation depth and he's in a low leverage long relief role right now. I don't think they'd bump him into the rotation unless they hit a quick succession of injuries

Were there any trade deadline buyers who bought, or bought for too much, that should not have, in your judgment?
Anthony Franco
4:45
Hmm, this is a good question which I hadn't really considered
4:46
The Angels would probably be consensus pick on this but I thought they were right to go for it. I've been a Cubs skeptic all year but the team's playing well lately and the division's there for the taking, so sure, go get Candelario
I guess the Padres would be my pick for this
4:47
Wouldn't say anything they did was necessarily bad in isolation but I'd have probably given more consideration than they did to trading Snell, Hader and Lugo
4:48
Not sure I loved the Marlins' moves as a collective but that's less about aggressiveness in general and more about the players they specifically brought in

4:48
Should there be legitimate concern about Mitch Keller?
Anthony Franco
4:51
Concern's probably overstating it but the command has been wobbly recently and he's still having issues with left-handed hitters. I still think he's good but there are enough red flags than I'm not in on him as a true top-of-the-rotation starter
More like a solid 3/4 guy on a contender

What happened to Jeff Todd? I always enjoyed his insights.

He left the site a few years. Believe he's still running this mountain bike company in Virginia

I will still be at Jays games cheering them on but after not adding to the offense with a trade plus Bo's injury and other surging teams... I'm getting this dreadful feeling that the season is going to slip away, same feeling like in 1987 after the Fernandez and Whitt injuries.  This weekend against Boston could be the most important one that defines the Jays for this year unless the elite offense shows ups and stays around - if they fell out of the wildcard spot, do you think they have enough to take it back?
Anthony Franco
4:55
Sure. I don't think the teams battling them for a Wild Card spot (aside from HOU/TEX, who were better to begin with) dramatically outdid them at the deadline. DeJong and Hicks were solid complementary pickups
4:56
I'd be surprised if the last Wild Card spot didn't come down to the final 2-3 days of the season. Seattle, Toronto, Boston, New York and Los Angeles are all fine but flawed teams

Any good young NL pitchers we can expect to see called up soonish?
Anthony Franco
4:58
Wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs brought up Jordan Wicks. Giants' Kyle Harrison probably gets a look if he's healthy, missed the last couple weeks with a hamstring strain
Guessing Harrison breaks in out of the bullpen

Should the Mets trade Alonso?  The team basically admitted they’ve spent too much and I can’t see any other resources to help retool.  Could he bring back a young starter?

The Mets won't get Ohtani. Who do you see them going after for the rotation for 2024?
How 'bout those Mets! I kind of like what they did at the deadline. I don't think Steve Cohen is going to let 2024 turn into a dumpster fire. What's your take on it?
Anthony Franco
5:00
Doesn't seem like they seriously considered an Alonso trade this summer. I imagine they'll take offers next winter but Cohen's recent comments suggest they're still interested in trying to extend him
5:03
As for the rotation, could see them still getting in on a Montgomery type. They'd make a lot of sense for Seth Lugo ironically. Maybe a two-year deal for Mahle to finish rehabbing with an eye towards '25
