KC has played a slew of prospects this past couple of weeks: Nate Eaton, Maikel Garcia, Michael Massey, Nick Pratto, Vinnie Pasquantino, etc. Are any of them future All Stars?
Anthony Franco
3:19
I don't think any are going to be perennial All-Stars but I'd take the over on 0.5 All-Star appearances from that group combined
Pasquantino feels like he's got the best shot, slow MLB start aside

It seems to me the Brewers are weaker as a result of the recent trades. I can't figure out their plan, can you?

How bad is the Hader trade looking for Milwaukee already?
Anthony Franco
3:21
Well I liked the Hader trade for them more before they immediately cut Lamet. Still don't really understand that one. He got squeezed out by Trevors Gott and Rosenthal?
3:22
But evaluating the trade on its own, I thought it was fine. Maybe even leaned in their favor. There's a downgrade from Hader to Rogers obviously but I don't think it's as big as most people are making it out to be -- particularly since Hader seems to prefer going one inning at a time and one of the reasons he's so valuable is the capacity to go 2-3 frames a pop
3:23
Then you pick up Gasser and Ruiz, both of whom are good prospects whom I like a fair amount. In the long run, I think they probably come out ahead but it definitely looks bad in the short term when the bullpen costs them a couple games against the Pirates
3:24
It's the kind of needle-threading teams like the Rays and Guardians do a lot though. Doesn't always work, but narrowly winning these kinds of trades is a big part of what allows those organizations to have consistent success with budgetary limitations. Feels like the Brewers are trying to emulate that

With two months left to go and the trade deadline passed, give us some predictions re the teams -- other than the Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, Mets -- that you now expect to make (or miss) the playoffs.
Anthony Franco
3:26
Ok so I believe the 12 playoff teams we have right now would be NYY, MIN, HOU, TOR, SEA, TB, LAD, NYM, STL, ATL, SD, PHI
Milwaukee's tied with St. Louis/Philly, maybe they'd be in above one of those two, idk
3:27
But anyways, I actually think I'd take all the AL teams to hold on and put in the first five NL teams, with Milwaukee getting in above Philly
3:28
I have to move on from the Giants. They've used up all my optimism

Thoughts on the Orioles moves at the deadline? Lopez I think is having a career year and Mancini will most likely be a free agent after the season. The Orioles just keep piling up prospects.
Anthony Franco
3:29
Mancini one was a good deal in my opinion. I didn't think they'd trade him with all that he means to the organization and how close they were, but I didn't expect a Seth Johnson type prospect to be out there
The López one felt light even if this is kind of his peak value and I'd have held him over taking that. They must love Cade Povich

i know the Rockies beat to their own drum, but it’s fair to ask: what in the world are they doing and why didn’t they trade any of their free agents at the trade deadline two years in a row?
Anthony Franco
3:30
They think they have the makings of a core there. They've been clear about that, both in their words and actions
3:31
Essentially everyone outside the organization disagrees, but it seems they're just going to keep running it back with the same players and hoping for better

Mariners Jays Rays. No way any other team makes the wild card right? white sox only other option?
Anthony Franco
3:31
I'd put them in that order but won't completely write off Cleveland like that. Have been waiting for them to fall off and they never really have
Dylan
3:32
Most surprising move at deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:32
The Cubs not trading Contreras if that counts. Didn't anticipate Merrifield to Toronto for obvious reasons
3:33
Yankees/Cardinals swap of Montgomery and Bader, Astros/Braves Odo/Smith deal
Had a few of those big leaguer for big leaguer trades that kind of come out of left field
Hader too obviously
Abner Doubleday
3:33
Who's the real Brady Singer: The one who got 11 strikeouts in a game, or the one who gave up 11 hits in two innings?
Anthony Franco
3:34
The answer's always somewhere in the middle but closer to the 11-strikeout guy, IMO. He's good
Lefties are probably always going to give him some trouble without a great third pitch. I don't think he'll ever be an ace, but he's a solid #3 type to me
Nomahhhhh
3:34
Are you surprised the Red Sox didn’t move more guys that are soon to be free agents? Do you think they believe they really have a shot this year?
Anthony Franco
3:35
Kind of. They've tried to walk the line on this stuff a few times -- Bradley and prospects for Renfroe, Hosmer deal, trading Vázquez but trading for McGuire
3:37
It feels a little too cute at times in my view, and I do think they'd have been better suited to pick a clearer lane this summer. If they think they're still in it, why trade Vázquez for two marginal prospects and piss off the clubhouse?
Marc
3:37
How bad will the Mets' relative inaction at the deadline come back to bite them? Are Mauricio, Ramirez, Vientos really good enough to not trade for Robertson, Chafin, Contreras, Happ, etc when you have a legit shot at a title? What was Eppler thinking??
Anthony Franco
3:38
Expected a little more bullpen work from them but they've been pretty adamant about not dealing from the top of the system after the Crow-Armstrong/Báez swap last year
3:39
I don't think it's fatal or anything though. They're probably going to win the NL East and could absolutely still win a title without Contreras or Chafin
Abe Froman

The White Sox.... WFT
Anthony Franco
3:41
Their inaction hurts, but it was about what I expected. I wrote a couple weeks ago about why I didn't see them doing a whole lot (thin infield trade market, franchise-record payroll, bad farm system). It was always going to be a tough deadline for them
3:42
Some of that is their own fault, obviously. I don't think Rick Hahn and the front office are off the hook about them having little of value to trade without dealing from the major league team and no payroll space. Their prior decisions put them in this position
But with where they were at the time of the deadline, felt like they didn't have much choice but to shrug and hope Moncada, Grandal and Lynn start to play better
