What do you think the Orioles will do during the offseason? It seems like they could add more than 50mln to their payroll, so Correa/DeGrom/Verlander/Thor seem like possible options, with Rodrigues, Henderson and other prospect coming soon to the big leagues this seems like the window for winning could start in 2023, should be in full mode by 2024.
Anthony Franco
3:43
Yeah they're going to be interesting for the first time in the Elias era. I think they should be pretty aggressive in attacking starting pitching and infield help
3:44
The free agent shortstop class is strong again. Rotation class skews a little older which maybe isn't ideal for a young team, but they've got the farm depth to make a run at a Pablo López type. It's time to start contemplating that stuff

How often do we publicly hear of a player refusing to waive he no trade clause? It’s Hosmers right to do it but it also puts him in bad standings with the fans. It feels like manipulation by the team to leak the deal knowing theirs a ton of pressure on him to waive it. The only other recent player I can think who refused to waive their no trade clause was Lucroy when the brewers wanted to send him to the then indians.
Anthony Franco
3:45
Yep we were talking about this over G-chat at the time it was happening and felt the same way you do
3:46
Someone leaked it trying to pressure him to accept a trade that, frankly, he should have no interest in accepting. I get why they did it but it sucks, particularly since Padre players generally seemed to like Hosmer a lot
Reds for life
3:46
thoughts on the Reds' stockpile of minor league talent?
Anthony Franco
3:47
Really good deadline for them. Castillo trade was a hell of a lot (although I think it was the right time for Seattle to push in). Liked the Mahle package too, I've liked Encarnacion-Strand a lot since he was in college and both he and Steer have really elevated their stocks lately
3:48
I guess I thought they'd get a mid-tier prospect for Donovan Solano and they didn't, but otherwise, I loved pretty much everything they did
3:49
They got themselves into this position with prior bad decisions, to be clear. It'd be better if they were in position to buy. But if we're evaluating strictly what they've done over the past week, really good work

Is there a chance someone like Xavier Edwards, who's lost in the shuffle and needs to go on the 40-man after this season, gets dealt for someone a couple of years away but almost as talented?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Yeah I could see that. That's pretty much the Tampa Bay model for managing roster churn
3:50
Stockpile talented low level players, then trade a couple of them when the roster crunch hits for guys two years away. Rinse and repeat

3:50
What's the latest on Michael Conforto?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Still seems like he's shooting for September, nothing new since mid-July when Boras was trying to hype up how much interest he was receiving, etc.
Ron

The Dodgers didn't do as much as other contenders at the trade deadline but they do have several players coming back soon from the IL.  Anthony, what are your thoughts on their continued success in the NL?  Or should they have done more when they had the chance?  Thank You!
Anthony Franco
3:52
I'm a little surprised they weren't more involved in the starting pitching market. Felt like a situation where they could've looked at a controllable type to both build out the roster for the stretch run and guard against free agent departures for Anderson and Heaney
3:53
Similar story to the Mets though. They were quiet but they've put themselves in such good position they didn't have to force anything. No reason to think they won't be a consistent force in the NL for years to come

Anthony, can the Angels ever be a winning organization with Arte Moreno as their owner. I think not cashing in on Ohtani’s peak value was the kind of mistake that puts Arte first and the organization a distance second. The haul would have been even bigger than what Soto returned. The Angels have to figure out how to win with two generational players, which after five years they haven’t. He needs to commit to building an organization that can win consistently or sell the franchise who wants to.
Anthony Franco
3:53
It's not literally impossible to compete with Arte, they've done it at intermittent times before. But there's no question he makes it harder
3:54
I agree that he's not a good owner, probably bottom 5-10 in the league. He spends a fair amount but it often seems contingent on his meddling in roster decisions, the track record of which is not good

3:55
Which trade was the biggest steal in your opinion?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Yankees getting Montas probably. What the A's got and what the Reds got for Castillo were night and day
3:56
I've kind of defended the A's on a lot of their moves over the past few months. I thought that one was just bad
Dave…just Dave
3:56
Where does JBJ end up? He feels like the type of player a playoff team will pick up as a late game defensive replacement.
Anthony Franco
3:56
Yeah he'll clear waivers and then get picked up by somebody. White Sox maybe?
3:57
They're vaguely competitive, have a bunch of outfielders who can't really play the outfield (Vaughn, Sheets, Eloy to some extent)
Abe Froman
3:57
Does it make any sense for a team to sign Michael Conforto now that there isn't a QO penalty attached to him? At this point, would he even be ready by September?
Marc
3:57
Any chance at a Conforto-Mets reunion in September?
Anthony Franco
3:57
Mets are a tough fit for me with the amount of outfield/DH depth they already have
3:58
Doesn't seem like Conforto will be able to throw by September, so you'll probably have to commit to just plugging him in at DH
I do think he'll end up somewhere though. No real downside for a team like Cleveland that hasn't gotten much out of their DH this year to give him a look

3:59
Meibrys Viloria is only 25 and used to be a prospect. Did Texas call him up to sit on the bench, or will he and Heim end up in a  platoon?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Just a backup probably. He did used to be a decent prospect but he's not too far removed from clearing waivers and not getting any MLB offers as a free agent
4:00
Even if he's "only" their backup catcher for a couple years, that's a great outcome for a minor league free agent signee

Anthony,  what was the rationale behind the Tigers not moving Soto or Jimenez at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
4:01
Avila just said they didn't get offers they liked and would rather keep both via arbitration
4:02
I'm a little surprised in Jiménez's case, in particular, but it's plausible. He's right they didn't have to just take anything they were offered. Whether they got an offer they should've pulled the trigger on, I don't know

With Efross gone, who is Cubs closer rest of season?
Anthony Franco

I'd guess it goes back to Rowan Wick
