That report first came out on Wednesday evening (not originally from Yardbarker) and implied that Conforto could look to sign by August 31 so he was eligible for the playoff roster
3:26
We didn't cover it at the time because we were wary of its reliability, and it seems to have been erroneous. Obviously, Conforto did not sign by Wednesday, and Scott Boras went on the record to call the report inaccurate
3:27
I think Conforto broadly makes sense for the Astros with Brantley likely to depart in free agency
3:29
As for the contract terms, I could buy 2/30 being a reasonable offer if it meant a prorated $15MM this year (so like $2.8MM in actually) with another $15MM for next year. If we were talking like $2MM for September and $28MM for next season, that'd be a crazy offer for a player coming off shoulder surgery
Alas, that's all theoretical since it seems like it never actually happened

3:29
Which players should the Astro  put a priority on signing to long term contracts?
Anthony Franco
3:30
I think any of the good young players are reasonable enough, but Tucker and Pena would be the guys I'd contact first
3:31
Probably not going to end up getting deals with both of those guys, though. Even one plus, say, Cristian Javier would be really valuable in keeping the core around
Bruce
3:31
Besides extending Dansby, paying for Ozuna to go away in a bad trade, and bringing back Morton, is there anything else the 2023 Braves need for a great 2023 season?  Maybe acquire a star for LF?
Anthony Franco
3:33
Yeah I mean it's basically just bringing back everybody from a team on a 99-win pace. That's a great roster
3:34
Maybe you want to add a reliever with Jansen departing, but you could argue that the Iglesias trade and a full season from Yates achieves that. This team's really good, and it's going to stay that way for a long time with the core in place for a while
Bill Metsiac
3:34
The Mets have multiple potential FAs this year, including Jake, Diaz, Nimmo, Walker, Carrasco, Bassitt, Vogelback, Ruf, Naquin and others.
Which do you think they'll re-sign, and which will walk?
Anthony Franco
3:34
Vogelbach will be back on a club option, I lean towards them exercising Carrasco's option too
3:35
Think there's a good chance things line up for Taijuan Walker to be offered and accept a qualifying offer
I'd probably pick Díaz and deGrom as the guys likeliest to come back of the rest of that group. Wouldn't surprise me to see them keep any of them, obviously, but it's a big enough class they'll let a couple walk

In a 15 man keeper league, of the recently called up, who should I keep: Peraza, Torkelson or Hunter Brown .
Anthony Franco
3:36
I think Brown's likeliest to be good right away, but he's going to do it as a middle reliever, so I don't know if that holds much fantasy appeal
3:37
So probably Peraza then? Tork wasn't very good in Triple-A, so I don't think he'll immediately turn the corner now that he's back in the majors

With less than a month left to the season, which of these pitchers is more likely to give me quality innings: relievers Cody Morris, Matthew Boyd, or Dylan Coleman, or starters Daniel Lynch, Adam Oller, or Austin Voth?
Anthony Franco
3:37
Most intrigued by Boyd of the relievers, Lynch of the starters
On Guard-ians..
3:37
Who does Cleveland most want to hook up in a trade for their excess pitching?
Anthony Franco
3:39
Aside from like the Astros and Marlins, pretty much everyone with designs on contending will be in on controllable starting pitching this winter
3:40
Orioles seem like a good candidate to pursue something like this now that they're competitive. Padres could lose a bunch of guys to free agency, so could the Mets. Blue Jays, Rangers, maybe the D-Backs also fit
Bartolo
3:40
What trade has left which team with the biggest deadline regret?
Anthony Franco
3:42
I think it's too early to close the book on any trade. It's only been a month. The Hader one looks rough for both teams but plenty of time for that to even out. Yankees have taken a lot of flack for the Montgomery trade but haven't even gotten a look at Bader yet
By and large, I think if the team made the trade a month ago, they'd probably still do it
3:43
Bigger deadline "whiff" is probably the moves teams didn't make. Red Sox and Giants both could've sold more but held off (justifiably enough, in my view) in hopes of making the playoffs, which they won't do. Cubs inaction outside of the bullpen teardown was really perplexing
Carson Kelly
3:43
Do you see Carson Kelly as a potential non-tender candidate?  He is making $3.325 million this season.  Isn't he starting to get kinda pricey for what he offers?  On the other hand, there are no obvious replacement candidates in the system.  Dbacks seemed to have made Varsho a full-time outfielder.
Anthony Franco
3:45
I think he gets another year. Like you said, no obvious in-house alternatives and he's shown glimpses of being a two-way catcher before he fractured his wrist
3:46
He's probably not that player anymore, but .226/.298/.362 isn't actually too far below-average for a catcher at this point. If this is the floor, he's boring but fine, and he still has at least a chance to get better
Bartolo
3:47
Who do the jays extend next year - Lourdes Gurriel or Teoscar Hernandez?
Anthony Franco
3:48
Probably neither but Teoscar feels more likely. Gurriel's ok but not the kind of guy you have to commit to a year in advance. Corner outfielders like him are available for pretty cheap in free agency every year
Mariner Moose
3:49
Are there any recent examples that could help to inform what a George Kirby or Logan Gilbert extension might look like?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Not really. Not much recent precedent with starting pitchers with between one and two years of service signing an extension
3:51
In 2020, Freddy Peralta got $15.5MM guaranteed and gave away two potential free agent years via club option. That's pretty light, and Gilbert and Kirby were both first-round picks who'll look to beat that pretty notably in extension talks
3:52
Actually, the Aaron Ashby one might be a better comp now that I think about it. He was technically a 0-1 guy when he signed this July, but he'd have gotten past one year next offseason anyways, so he's basically in that bucket
He got $20.5MM guaranteed and gave up two free agent years. Gilbert and Kirby are better pitchers than Ashby, so that should be the floor

3:53
Is there a team who would take Ozuna, even for a bag of used baseballs? He was never a consistent hitter, and seems to have forgotten how to hit at all.
Anthony Franco
3:53
I don't think he's tradable, no. If he's released, I expect someone would sign him for the league minimum
