Who are the best free agents who won't receive a Q.O.?  No way the O's give up draft picks to sign a free agent, right?
Anthony Franco
2:32
Carlos Correa, Justin Verlander got QO's last year and can't be tagged again. Benintendi and Bell were traded midseason so they're ineligible, José Abreu has gotten one before as well
2:33
As far as good players who are eligible but might fall a little short of QO territory, Tyler Anderson and Mitch Haniger stand out. Taijuan Walker perhaps
2:34
I'd be surprised if the O's signed a qualified free agent, although that's more so because I don't think they'll play at the very top of the market than that they'd specifically rule out the possibility of surrendering a draft choice. Think they'll be more in the middle tier of the rotation market generally, maybe a depth infielder or catcher

Would Joe Girardi be a good fit as the next manager of the Angels?  And does Joe Madden manage next year (or again)?
Anthony Franco
2:35
I never have any idea what's going to happen with the managerial circuit. So much of what matters happens outside public view
2:36
My gut feel is that Maddon's more likely to manage again than Girardi (at least next season), but I'm not especially confident in that
2:38
Reports out of Philadelphia make it seem like Girardi's an intense guy whose presence got pretty grating by the end, but that very well could just be a narrative driven by the fact that an underperforming team started to turn things around

What is the # 1 to do item this off season for new Guru Harris to do. When will our suffering improve . Thank you
Anthony Franco
2:39
I don't see a path back to contention next year, unfortunately. Too many holes on the position player side coupled with the health uncertainty for Mize and Skubal
2:40
Feels like they just have to slow-play this offseason, add some stopgap starters and a new catcher, and give Greene, Torkelson, Baddoo, Kreidler and Carpenter opportunities to see if they're long-term regulars
By 2024, more of the picture will be clear and they'll have the money to directly attack the weaknesses that remain

Has Reese McGuire and Connor Wong done enough to be the 1/2 (or 1a/1b if they split playing time) behind the plate for the Sox next year? Or do they bring in one of the few free agent options out there?
Anthony Franco
2:41
Yeah, the free agents have been almost unanimously awful. The only good ones have been Contreras (too expensive for a team with so many other holes) and Vázquez (who doesn't feel like he's coming back)
2:42
So I think it's probably Wong/McGuire with a Romine type just brought in on a Spring Training invite to try to crack the roster
SJ Giants
2:42
Will the Giants keep Rodon?
Anthony Franco
2:43
I lean towards no on Rodón specifically but think they'd replace him with a top-of-the-rotation starter if he leaves
Someone like Verlander who has a huge annual salary but over a shorter term than Rodón, who I think gets to six years

Hey Anthony, The Mets have many 2023 free agents. I would be surprised if they signed anyone beyond deGrom, Diaz and Nimmo, or maybe just 2 of those 3. Unless, Steve Cohen doesn't mind a $50 million or greater payroll tax. What do you think? Thanks!
Anthony Franco
2:44
Yeah I agree that at least one of those guys goes. I'd take the field over the Mets on Nimmo
2:45
With Bassitt, Carrasco, Lugo, Walker also potential free agents, they're not going to be able to run everything back

Ken Rosenthal commented on a   Levi Weaver article from the Athletic  out yesterday stating Texas Could possibly be looking at three new starters along with Perez, Can they afford that kind of quality, I know it said via trades as well, What money are quality pitchers gonna need to come to Texas. DeGrom  40-50 million? Who else ?
Anthony Franco
2:46
Yeah they're not getting three top-of-the-rotation types. If they signed a deGrom or Verlander, it's probably bringing back Pérez and adding someone fine but unexciting like Drew Smyly at the back end
2:47
Smyly or a Mike Minor reunion isn't going to cost much and would at least make it so they're not so reliant on Glenn Otto and Spencer Howard

2:47
On a fielder's choice how does that work for the batter's OBP?  Like a walk or an out?
Anthony Franco
2:48
It's an out, as is reaching on an error. Fielder's choice should be an out, but I think reaching on error should go towards a player's OBP

Everyone talks like Hicks and Donaldson are gone from the Yankees after the season.  Is that possible without the Yankees eating a lot (all) the money? or attaching prospects?  Or bad contract swap?  I just don't see it.  Maybe bad contract swap but the rest I cannot see, and I fear they are both on the Yankees next year.
Anthony Franco
2:49
Hicks, absolutely not. No one's coming close to the roughly 3/$31MM he's still owed after this year. They're stuck with him, unless they swap it for another underwater deal or just release him as you suggested
2:51
Donaldson's a little more palatable. It's only one year, and while I can't see anyone taking on the full $21.75MM, I think there'd be modest interest if the Yankees paid down half of it. He'd still be an upgrade for a bunch of teams at third base, even if his best days are obviously well behind him

2:51
If you add up all the WAR from every player would that equal the total number of wins for the entire league?
Anthony Franco
2:52
No I don't know the specific calculation for it but a replacement level team wouldn't go 0-162. It's somewhere in the 45-55 win range
2:53
The cumulative WAR is less than the total number of wins leaguewide, in other words
Rangers13
2:53
If Arrenado does opt out and doesn't sign with St.Louis, what will his contract look like?
Anthony Franco
2:53
Freeman got 6/162 at the same age (albeit with deferrals). Arenado has more defensive value and is probably a better overall player
2:54
I think he'd also get six years and could beat Rendon's $35MM AAV. 35.5 million per over six years comes out to $213MM, so that's probably where I'd end up
2:55
If we're assuming he's only concerned about maximizing earning power
It doesn't seem like he is in actuality

Brewers seemed to collapse after the Hader trade, coincidence? Are they looking for OF, SP or 1B help next year and if so in what order?
Anthony Franco
2:57
Yeah I think it's mostly coincidental. Taylor Rogers has been terrible, which is a direct result of the trade and doesn't help, but I just don't buy that Rowdy Tellez and the catching duo stopped hitting because they were so downtrodden about Hader getting traded
2:58
I expect they'll look for all three things you mentioned, particularly if they take this winter to deal one of Burnes or Woodruff while their leverage is at peak value. Outfield feels like the priority, followed by first and then backfilling the rotation
