So they'll probably round up a little on those guys. I'm more bullish on Anthony Rizzo this winter than I was last year for this reason (in addition to the fact that he's just been good this year after not really playing well in 2021)
How much of a difference should it make? I don't know, and that's probably an answer teams will have varying opinions on. But you do kind of have an idea of which guys are going to be most affected by the rule at least

Does it make sense to add Eovaldi at top of the rotation, Taillon or Stripling in the middle, and a 1 yr veteran like Cueto or Kluber at the end? I am assuming Texas resigns Perez. I think the cost-effective adds to the bullpen would be Knebel to close, and C. Martin and Carl Edwards Jr. to go with Moore and Burke seems reasonable and should improve the team. What do you think?
Anthony Franco
3:45
I'd rather see them aim higher than Eovaldi at the top end. The rotation you mentioned is better than the one they've had this year, unquestionably, but I still think it's like 15th-20th league-wide

Mets need to make a bold move for sustainable success.  Trade Alvarez for a big haul and deal with McCann until their first round draft pick is ready
Anthony Franco
3:46
This would be bold. Not sure I agree, but he could center a deal for an impact player, sure
3:47
You very rarely see prospects of Álvarez's caliber get traded. He's probably better than any individual prospect the Padres gave up for Soto, although they obviously sent five players with pretty substantial value

Is there a rule in the CBA against trade kickers aka bonus?  You never hear about them in baseball
Anthony Franco
3:48
You mean money to a player who gets traded? That happens fairly frequently, they're called assignment bonuses in MLB
3:49
Joely Rodríguez had one worth $500K in the deal that sent him from the Yankees to the Mets, which is the first example that came to my head for some reason. There are plenty more

Everyone says Wins are a useless stat but I disagree and would like you to weigh in.  Some pitchers it seems always do just enough to win while their teammates come up with just enough.  There are many examples but I always think of bob wickman winning 18 games with the yanks.  Call it clubhouse presence or just likable but some pitchers consistently get the win while others with same era , whip, etc do not.  Because of that I still think there is value to a pitcher with a high win total.  What say you mr Franco?
Anthony Franco
3:50
I don't pay attention to them. Don't buy the idea that guys will actively try harder to protect the lead for certain pitchers over others because they like them more. They're professionals and have a really strong financial incentive to play the best they can no matter the situation
3:51
I do think wins tend to be directionally right (at least for starters, not for relievers). Pitching well enough to stay in a game for five-plus innings and leaving with the lead usually means you're doing a decent job keeping runs off the board
3:52
But we have other stats that more purposefully get to that point anyways (runs allowed, strikeout rate, etc.) so I don't bother checking the win tallies. I know Kyle Wright's won 20 games this year, though. Glad to see his breakout
Maris
3:52
What's your take on Maris' kid having a platform to comment on something he has zero credibility (not to mention a bias) commenting on?
Anthony Franco
3:53
I have no issue asking him the question or anything like that. But as you said, he has a pretty obvious reason that could color his opinion the way it has. I disagree with him, as I mentioned earlier in the chat

If Correa opts out could we get him
Anthony Franco
3:54
Would be shocked if the Angels doled out another position player contract north of $200MM with the sale pending, particularly a year from Ohtani's free agency

Hey Anthony, Has there been an authoritative study done on the effects of Fenway's Green Monster? I suspect it turns a not insignificant number of home runs into doubles. Has anyone explored this question?  Thanks!
Anthony Franco
3:55
I've never seen anything definitive, would be an interesting read. My instinct is that it probably cuts in the opposite direction actually
3:56
It's very tall but it's also extremely close to home plate, compared to most other left field walls. So there are certainly balls that would get out in other stadiums that don't there -- very hard hit but relatively low fly balls or high line drives -- but you're probably more likely to get a lower exit velocity, high-angle batted ball out of Fenway that you would in a lot of other places

Your thoughts on Farhan Zaidi as Pres of Baseball Ops and the outlook for the SF Giants this off season and chance to contend in 2023?
Anthony Franco
3:57
I think he's a good baseball ops leader who approached last offseason mostly as I would've. The 2021 team earned the chance to mostly run it back by playing as well as they did, in my opinion. They mostly stuck with them this season. It didn't work, but I think it was the right decision
3:58
Where I'd criticize them is their lack of investment in the bullpen this year. They kind of stitched that together last season, and it was always going to be really hard to replicate
3:59
As for the outlook this winter, it's totally different. They ran it back, it didn't work. Now it's time to move on from Belt and Longoria and add some more youth, and they need at least one impact free agent position player

Who would be number 4 after Verlander, Degrom and Rodon?
Anthony Franco

Probably Chris Bassitt
Bill

I confess to still being bummed over the loss of Freddie,But Matt Olson is not of the same caliber as Freeman, leading to fears of Chris Davis redux
Anthony Franco
4:01
I expected Olson to be better than he has been this season, but it's nowhere near a Davis contract
4:02
Olson is a couple years younger than Davis was at the time. He's been a more consistent offensive player (albeit without Davis' power heights at his peak) and doesn't strike out nearly as often
I still think the Olson extension is going to come out fine for the Braves in the long run

Who signs Gallo? How much? Same questions for Conforto.
Anthony Franco
4:03
Hmm, Rockies for Gallo and Brewers for Conforto?
4:04
Thinking like $8MM for Gallo. Similar base salary for Conforto but with more incentives

As a yankee fan I am jealous.  Can you please explain how Boston can keep getting top 5 picks then win the WS the next year then go back to getting a top 5 pick? Rinse/repeat
Anthony Franco
4:05
Ha I don't think that's the most sustainable way of running an organization. It's mostly just luck once you get to the postseason
4:06
The Red Sox have had more success in the past 20 years than the Yankees have had, because they've won all the World Series. But I'd much rather take the Yankees approach of being competitive every season for the next 20 years, if that makes sense
Don't think the Sox have some secret sauce that allows him to tear through the playoffs most of the time they get in
Jose

Do the Jays re-sign stripling?
Anthony Franco
4:08
I'm sure they'll look into it but I think he's pitched his way into a better deal than they'll match elsewhere
