They could add all four without getting to the tax. And they shouldn't even be wary of paying the tax.
3:54
As for Flexen, depends on how deep your league is, I guess. He's been good this year but not in a sustainable way. His SIERA is 4.60, which seems like a fair guess for his ERA for the rest of the season.
Dick Monfort
3:54
Has there been any indication if I still like McMahon enough to keep holding onto him?
Darragh McDonald
3:55
It has been reported in previous years that Monfort loves McMahon. This week, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported that the Rockies are more willing to listen on trades this year, given how bad things are going.
3:57
The Rockies have been pretty consistent in not trading guys when they should, so I wouldn't be shocked if they held him. But this season is just so bad that it has to lead to some willingness to shake things up. Or it should.

I am increasingly ok with Robert Suarez opting out of his last two years, and going to free agency. His outings all too often involve missed location, traffic on the basepaths, a lot of base hits, and barely hanging on if he completes the save. Will I get my wish? Will Suarez still opt out?
Darragh McDonald
4:00
I believe you will get your wish, yes.
4:01
It's $16MM over two years. That's Emilio Pagan money. He should be able to top that.
Manny Machado
4:02
If the Padres are 10 games out at the All star break do they move people or take more payroll on? The need a left fielder, a catcher and a starter. That alone could increase the payroll well over 20 million more.
Darragh McDonald
4:03
Hard to say what kind of financial wiggle room they have. It was obviously an issue in the offseason. That's why they signed so many guys to tiny guarantees and creatively structured the Pivetta deal.
Did they keep any powder dry? If not, would ownership give them more?
4:04
They could get other clubs to eat money in trades but that means giving up more prospect talent.

Who do you the Royals will be trading this month?
Darragh McDonald
4:06
The Royals are in a real tough spot.
4:07
4.5 games back isn't awful but it's also not great. FanGraphs only gives them a 9.2% chance of making the playoffs right now.
On the other hand, they just had some momentum last year and probably don't like the P.R. message of punting when they're so close.
4:08
My guess would be they grab an outfielder or two and hope that's enough of a spark to make a run. The pitching is good enough that I can buy that somewhat.
4:10
Get, say, Jesus Sanchez and Ramon Laureano and see what happens. Shouldn't cost too much.
4:11
If they fall further back, I'm guessing Lugo will be out there. Maybe Estevez, India.
Lorenzen as well, though he won't bring back much.
El Chupacabra

Should KC deal Lugo for a good package well before the trade deadline, but add offense and try to make a playoff run, a la the Tigers last year with Flaherty?
Darragh McDonald
4:12
If they're making a run, I think they keep Lugo. His player option is going to tamp down the return they can get. They're not going to be able to get a Flaherty-type package. Might as well hang onto Lugo if you still have hope.

Is Ben Cherington still the GM of the Pirates next season?  Bad trades, bad development, constant revolving door of replacement level players (or, usually worse).  Sure seems like it's time for a regime change.
Darragh McDonald
4:12
I keep waffling on this one.
4:14
It has certainly not been a great tenure. But I can also see the argument for letting him stick around. The pitching pipeline is really exciting. Baseball America now says Konnor Griffin is the top prospect in the sport. Or he will be, once Roman Anthony graduates.
4:16
Maybe they trade some pitching for major league ready bats this summer and it kinda feels like things are going okay? I don't know. It just feels like maybe it's a weird time to pull the ripcord when things are still kinda coming together. Feels dumb to say after so many years but I don't know.

Will Gleyber Torres earn $100 million on his next contract, and how many years might it cover? Your opinion.
Darragh McDonald
4:19
Man, I don't know. He has been really good this year and is still young but it's so rare to see a second baseman get this kind of money in free agency. Semien is basically the only one in the past decade.
4:20
He'll be one of the tougher guys to predict when we do our Top 50.
4:23
I'll guess something like... 4/70?
4:24
That's basically Starling Marte money. Torres is younger but because he's a second baseman and has been inconsistent, I doubt anyone really wants to commit to him for the long term.

Listening to your answer about Lugo, Severino, Cabrera, Suarez thing Yes financially it may work but  trade ships to acquire them?
Darragh McDonald
4:25
I think the Cubs have some solid prospects and should be willing to put them on the table. Hoyer is in the final year of his contract and it feels wobbly. Put the pedal to the metal.

4:26
Should the Braves pick up Ozzie's 7 million option for 2026. I know that it is only a 3 million net decision (because the 4 million buy out) but with most of the position players lock up for the long term, 2B is actually one of the few places to get improvement for next year and I just don't see a hot streak for him in this lost season.
Darragh McDonald
4:26
Even if they want to give up on Albies, they should pick up the option and trade him.
4:27
$3MM is, like, Kyle Farmer/Kevin Newman money.
4:29
Okay, I've got to wrap it up. Thanks for stopping by. Sorry for the questions I couldn't get to. If you're a new subscriber, we do these every Monday and Friday, so you will have lots of chances.
