The league is trying to pivot from broadcast to streaming and 2028 is apparently super important for that, because that's when a lot of the current contracts end. It would be so bad for the league to get rid of all their juice just before that.
1:43
Also, Manfred's contract is up in 2029 and he has repeatedly talked about how proud he is of having no canceled games due to labor strife. Does he want to finish his tenure by flushing that down the drain when everybody already hates him for other reasons?
Anyway, poll time...
1:44
Do you think games will be canceled by a lockout in 2027?

More Dodger predictions: how many starts for each Dodger pitcher? I'm guessing 25 each for Snell, Sasaki & Yamamoto; 20 for Glasnow; 15 each for Bobby Miller and Gonsolin; 10 for Dustin May; 27 for others, including a guy added at the deadline. Am I close?
Darragh McDonald
1:45
I have no idea. Haha.
1:46
Probably one of the wilder rotations compositions, in terms of the ratio from talent to uncertainty. Every guy is so good but also it's entirely possible that no one pitches big innings.
1:47
Gavin Stone led the team in 2024 with 140 1/3 innings. He required shoulder surgery at the end of the year and will miss all of 2025. That's how you build a World Series winner these days.

In a general sense, how big of a gap value-wise is there between a top 50 prospect and the 150th ranked prospect (assuming similar positions, minor league levels, etc.)? Are the two closer than most might think?
Darragh McDonald
1:50
Definitely. These things are very subjective, even within one publication.
Baseball America recently released their top 100...
And also a list of every guy that received a vote from one of their writers...
1:51
To pick an extreme example, the Blue Jays only had one guy on the actual top 100, which was Ricky Tiedemann in the very last spot. However, seven guys received at least one vote.
1:53
So, that means the Jays have six guys that aren't on that list but someone pushed for them. It's all very subjective and constantly changing. The list will be wildly different again in a few months.

Who's the better bet to sign an extension after a trade, Cease or King?
Darragh McDonald
1:54
I would guess King. He's been grinding for years and only recently broke out. He would probably be tempted to take the proverbial cash on the barrel.
1:55
Cease, on the other hand, has been really good for years and already has millions in the bank. Probably has more reason to bet on himself.

Level with me.  If the Yankees can’t unload Stroman are they done for the winter?
Darragh McDonald
1:56
Hmm, probably? But I would guess they move at least part of Stroman's deal.

Would Mets go to $80 million over 3 years for Alonso if they get a chance to override the optouts by adding money? Would Pete accept?
Darragh McDonald
1:59
Hmm. That's an interesting proposition, but those kinds of things mostly happen in longer deals. Cole and Soto have those kinds of clauses, but those are super long deals.
The whole thing with the Boras short-term deals is that the guy can just go back to free agency whenever he wants.

Who might the Yankees have to give up to obtain Luis Arráez from the Padres?  Seems like he might be a good fit batting ahead of Judge.
Darragh McDonald
2:00
He's not a great defender, so I'd be a bit surprised if someone actually keeps putting him at second base at this point. The Twins gave up on that a few years ago.

Hey, Darragh.  Thanks for covering for Anthony.  My question:  If Arte Moreno somehow had an epiphany and told Perry Minasian to do whatever he needed to, spend whatever he needed to make the Angels a serious contender...not a fringe playoff team, what could he do (and is it already too late??)
Darragh McDonald
2:02
The rotation is my answer.
2:03
Kikuchi is a fine mid-rotation pitcher but he's easily their ace right now, which is not a great spot to be. Soft tossers Anderson and Hendricks listed as #3 and #4 on RosterResource right now. Also not great.
2:04
Flaherty is sitting out there. So is Pivetta. Andrew Heaney, etc. Sign two of them.

Will the Dodgers get Arenado? Yes or no.
Darragh McDonald
2:04
I haven't seen anything to suggest they want to do that.

Will the Cubs and Dodgers, who will start the season early in Tokyo, be bound by the usual 26-man active roster limits?
Darragh McDonald
2:06
I'd have to look it up but I think clubs have been allowed one or two extra guys for these situations.
NL vs AL
2:07
Has the NL caught up or surpassed the AL? National league seems to be more competitive than the AL since the addition of the universal DH
Darragh McDonald
2:07
NL feels a lot stronger right now, I agree.
2:08
AL feels wide open. I can see 14 teams as possible playoff clubs (Sorry, White Sox) but there's also no clear juggernaut.

Do I help the Jays get Alonso?

There are rumors that their friendship is a factor. I never know how much credence to give to that stuff though. These days, guys seem to have friends all over.
2:09
Sasaki is apparently good buds with Darvish, but that didn't make him pick the Padres.
