Let's say the Jays DON'T extend Vladdy. If they sold Vlad, Bichette, Bassit, Gausman, Greene, at the deadline, the rebuild would be rather fast, wouldn't it?
Darragh McDonald
2:10
Sure, they could get a lot for that group if they're all healthy.

My team's GM reluctant to work with Boras on FA's or trades with his clients. Appears we are running it back as is. Do not underestimate. "In AA we trust (?)." What do you think? Go Braves !
Darragh McDonald
2:11
I don't know why you'd pick on Boras specifically. Atlanta's just never does a lot in free agency.
2:12
Ozuna's $65MM is the biggest deal AA has given to a free agent in Atlanta.
He's only done four deals longer than two years: Ozuna, Reynaldo, Will Smith, Profar.
Trade and extend is more their style.
MLB Fans

Why are the comment sections on sports sites filled with so much vitriol for athletes? The majority are really mean and full of hate?
Darragh McDonald
2:15
I see it all the time but I am still quite shocked by how miserable baseball fans are in general. Our site and social media are filled with people saying that this guy needs to be fired, this guy sucks, etc.
2:16
I recently saw Taylor Walls on X, defending what he was asking for in arbitration, which led to a whole bunch of Rays fans in the comments telling him that he sucks.
We also retweeted C.C. Sabathia getting exciting about getting elected to the Hall of Fame. People were in the mentions telling him how he didn't deserve it.
2:17
I can't imagine the gall of just straight up telling a major league baseball player that he sucks. It's one thing to yell trash talk from a crowd during a game, but directly like that?
People are nuts.

Labor negotiations
2:18
do you think the union and league would agree to a signing freeze for November/December and a 5th tier of luxury taxes in exchange for an extra roster spot?
Darragh McDonald
2:19
I think they will probably have bigger goals than a roster spot.
More money for pre-arb or arb guys is always a big one.
2:20
A fifth tier of the CBT isn't outlandish. They just agreed to a fourth. Another one would affect so few teams. Basically just the Dodgers right now.
The freeze, the players should be pretty against that. It would only encourage teams to lowball them and say "Take it or leave it" as the clock ticks.

Do we get the challenge system in mlb soon? The automatic ball/strike system isn’t working in the minors but the challenge system adds excitement and accuracy without slowing down the action
Darragh McDonald
2:21
I believe the challenge system will be used in spring training this year. If the players like it, it could be in regular season games next year.
Hit First, Field Later

Why haven't the Red Sox more seriously considered trying Rafael Devers at 2B? Their current plan is to try any of 5 or 6 guys who'll make up for their defense at the plate who are all going to hit about .150 unless Vaughn Grissom shows up (doubtful)
Darragh McDonald
2:22
Broadly speaking, the middle infield positions require more range than a corner. If he's bad at third, he's probably not going to be great at second.
File and trial
2:22
Is the fact that almost the whole league adheres to this strategy, a sign of collusion?
Darragh McDonald
2:23
Not by definition, I don't think. I think collusion involves doing something sneaky or underhanded. This is pretty out in the open. It's just a negotiating tactic that's generally effective.
2:24
But the league is pretty gross on arbitration. They apparently had a wrestling-style championship belt that they used to give out to the club that did the best at suppressing salaries.
Seattle T-Mobile park

Are the M’s the reverse Rockies? That stadium’s batting eye and weather seem to kill all hitting and power. Would a contact oriented approach like Arraez play better vs power bats in SEA?
Darragh McDonald

I recommend this story from Mike Petriello from this week...
KC closer
2:26
So who's going to get most saves in KC: Erceg or Estevez?
Darragh McDonald
2:26
I would guess they're leaning Estevez right now, just because he's been closing for the past two years. Erceg just a few months.
Bill
2:27
Is there any substance to Braves trading for Cease?
Darragh McDonald
2:27
I haven't seen anything concrete but he makes sense for them. And AA tends to run a tight ship in terms of keeping the rumors minimal before something becomes a done deal.
Devil's Advocate
2:28
Man, you guys have been GRILLED on deferred salaries recently. Unfairly, in my opinion. Have y'all considered explaining to people that the Dodgers have 10 guys who are overpaid (Chris Taylor, Austin Barnes, etc etc), Blake Snell has to stay healthy the entire year to earn his paycheck, and it's a stretch to say that Kershaw starting 10 games is actually worth $20 million? It's a flimsier house of cards than people realize
Darragh McDonald
2:28
I don't want to be mean to anyone but all the recent narratives around the Dodgers do make me go a bit insane.
2:29
One year ago, Dodger fans were all up in our mentions, saying that Roberts and Friedman needed to be fired because the team was going nowhere.
Other fan bases were mocking them. "Trying to buy a World Series but you can't. lol."
2:30
They win one title, their first in a full season since 1988, and suddenly we need to change all the rules because they must be stopped?
It seems wildly reactive to me.
