Darragh McDonald

I think they will deal him, yeah.
2:26
He seems like he wants to win and probably know he only has so many more chances. He was watching when Molina, Pujols and Wainwright did their farewell tours. He knows what's coming.
Given his age and where the Cards are at, it makes sense, for him and the club.
2:27
As for the money part, I'm sure they'd love to get a great return without eating any of the money, but they don't need the cost savings. Their payroll is already on pace to be way lower than last year.

Jeimer Candelario didn't live up to expectations last year,  offensively or defensively.  He was hampered by injury most of the year,  I believe it was knee tendinitis, that possibly led to the down year.   Do you think he will rebound in 2025?  Or would the Reds be better off trading him to someone like the A's along with a couple prospects like Connor Phillips or Julian Aguiar, and Jacob Hurtubise in a salary dump?
Darragh McDonald
2:31
It did seem like he was injured for a lot of the year, yeah. He had a .255/.310/.506 batting line and 118 wRC+ on June 21 when the knee reports came out. He also had a 118 wRC+ in 2023, so he was basically the same guy, but then dreadful once the knee stuff popped up. So, I think a bounceback is possible as long as his health is back to normal.

list least likely to be traded to most: Bieber, Montgomery, deGrom, Crochet, Mason Miller.
Darragh McDonald
2:32
Bieber's a free agent.
Of the other four, I'll say deGrom, Miller, Monty, Crochet.

Clear something up for me, if a large portion of the players salary is deferred does it eventually get against that year(s) payroll?
Darragh McDonald
2:34
For the actually cash purposes, I think teams will basically put most of the money in a bank account to collect interest, then pay it to the player when the deferrals are due.
2:35
For CBT purposes, it's only for the years the player is contracted to play. For Ohtani, his contract goes 2024 to 2033, with the deferrals from 2034 to 2043. His CBT hit will only be for the 2024 to 2033 part.

Hi Darragh--has anyone researched the connection between information leaks and certain agencies or teams?
Darragh McDonald
2:36
After the Ohtani circus last year, Bob Nightengale said 95% of leaks come from agents. Maybe more.

I understand every fan base, especially the Cubs, want their teams to spend billions of dollars in free agency, but does that always win?
Darragh McDonald
2:38
Not always, no. A smaller market club like the Royals wins the World Series every once in a while. Teams like the Rays, Brewers and Guardians are pretty consistently good without big budgets. But spending money on good players is pretty helpful, broadly speaking.

What do you see as the short and long term prognosis for the Tampa Bay Rays re a stadium? With no real home to return to (at least if you read what they're saying from city council reports), should we expect a nomadic period after the 2025 Steinbrenner experiment, including more minor league parks making like major league stadiums? Are Oakland or Nashville serrioius options, considering without a dome central Florida is not conducive for outdoor baseball. How about my Montreal? The 'Big Owe' is closed for repairs until 2028 but at one time there was a movement afoot to build an outdoor stadium...
Darragh McDonald
2:40
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up leaving the Tampa/St. Pete's area. Just my hunch but it seems like the relationship is not great right now, between the team and the local officials.
2:41
Nashville feels like a strong possibility for a club in the future, whether that's the Rays or an expansion franchise.
Oakland, I don't know. The relationship between the league and that city seems poor right now as well.
2:42
Montreal, I would love to see it but I have no idea how viable it is right now.

One surprise trade that no one sees coming:

Atlanta trades for Trevor Story.

Let's get crazy.....who says no, Mariners send George Kirby to the Nats for CJ Abrams?
Darragh McDonald
2:43
The Mariners say no real fast.

2:43
Do you think the Red Sox would be interested in Nick Lodolo?  I was thinking that a trade of Nick Lodolo for Wilyer Abreu would worth for both teams. Or would it take AndrewcAbbott
Darragh McDonald
2:44
If the Reds are open to trading Lodolo, they should let him get healthy first. Would be selling pretty low otherwise.

What team comes to mind as one  not pushing to be more competitive right now that you most think  should take advantage of a potential opportunity in 2025?
Darragh McDonald
2:46
The Cubs are in a pretty decent spot. Major league roster is middle of the pack but they've got a whole bunch of really good prospects on the cusp of making the jump. Future payroll is pretty clear apart from Dansby.
They should be pushing a bunch of chips in, but all the reports indicate they're not going after top free agents? It's strange to me.

2:46
For players that are posted from foreign leagues from Korea/Japan, do they need to complete full 6 years of service in MLB to be an unrestricted free agent in the big league? Or can they reach out to free agency asap their contract with their mlb team expires regardless of its legth?
Darragh McDonald
2:47
It depends on whether they are considered amateurs or professionals. MLB considers players "amateurs" until they are 25 years old and have six seasons of experience in another league.
2:48
For those "amateurs", they have to get six years of service like other young players that come up through the minors. This was the case with Ohtani and will be the case with Roki Sasaki.
2:50
But "professionals" can just sign a deal for one years, two years, whatever. Shintaro Fujinami signed a one-year deal with the Athletics in January of 2023.
He became a free agent after that one year.

Everyone seems to think Walker Buehler leaving the Dodgers is a foregone conclusion. Yet, he seems to be a perfect candidate to sign a one-year showcase deal to re-establish his value. Why not with the Dodgers? Besides, do other teams want to give up a draft pick for a guy who has yet to show his arm troubles (2 TJs) are behind him?
Darragh McDonald
2:50
Buehler didn't get a QO, so there's no draft pick to give up.
2:51
And he could certainly come back to the Dodgers, but it probably makes more sense to do it in a spot where his chances of getting bumped from the rotation are lower.
2:52
Dodgers have lots of injury risk but the rotation could be Snell, Yamamoto, Ohtani, Glasnow, Gonsolin, May, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack. Maybe they sign Sasaki.
