And I forgot Kershaw! Haha.

When will hitting coaches and players learn that it is better to get a single than to swing for the fences and strike out or hit a pop up?
Darragh McDonald
2:54
A single is better than a strikeout or pop-up but a home run is better than a single.
2:55
Luis Arraez is probably the poster boy of the kind of offensive approach you're talking about and his best seasons have seen him post a 130 wRC+. There's usually 20-40 guys who top that each year. Judge gets to around 200 wRC+ in his best seasons.
2:56
It's also harder to just get a single at will than it was in the past. Pitchers are just too nasty these days.

With all the team friendly contracts how in the heck can the Atlanta Braves have payroll issues ?
Darragh McDonald
2:57
They just have a lot of them. Most teams have some guys making $30MM or whatever and a handful of other guys making the league minimum. Atlanta has locked in so many guys in the $15-25MM range.
Posey-ing another question
2:57
Marco Luciano, Hayden Birdsong and Luis Matos for Crochet?  Who says no?
Darragh McDonald
2:57
The White Sox say no and start blocking Posey's calls for wasting their time.

Dodgers surprised me and many of my friends with the signing of Blake Snell, happy to have him.  Time to work on the outfield and resign Teoscar Hernandez.  Any news on him?  Thanks
Darragh McDonald
2:58
No real news but Passan suggested in a column that Teo probably prefers to sign quick this time, as opposed to waiting around like last winter. Similar to Snell, perhaps.
KBO players
2:59
It seems like Korean and Japanese leagues have caught up in pay for the lower salaried players. Do you see MLB raising the minimum salary next CBA?
Darragh McDonald
2:59
Well, the league won't do it for that reason. But the players will always push for higher salaries.

Odds that the Blue Jays trade Vlad at the deadline if they fall out of the race? What would the return be?
Darragh McDonald
3:01
If they fall out of the race and he hasn't signed an extension, sure. It would be malpractice not to trade him.
Jaden Shin
3:01
How about in the case of Yariel Rodriguez, it is on his contract that he could be an free agent after 2028, but he only played 3 seasons in Japan before signing with TBJ. Are there different cosequence for players from Cuba?
Darragh McDonald
3:03
He played six seasons in Cuba and three in Japan, so he was considered a professional. He'll be a free agent when that deal is done.

Why would Atlanta go after Crochet or Eovaldi over letting their young arms proceed  in the bigs?
Darragh McDonald
3:04
Injuries are inevitable and teams usually need nine or ten starters to get through a full season. Atlanta only really has Sale, Lopez and Schwellenbach right now.
3:05
They could fill the final two spots with Smith-Shawver, Waldrep, etc. But they can put in someone more established and then have those guys in Triple-A, waiting for someone to get hurt.
Salary Relief
3:05
If AZ paid half of Monty's 2024 salary and offered him with Lawlar to Oakland for Miller, would Oakland still say no?
Darragh McDonald
3:06
Well, first off, they're not Oakland anymore. Not to shame you. I do it myself still and have to break the habit!
But no, if the A's trade Miller, it's going to be for some pile of talent, not to help the DBacks get Monty's contract out of town.
Marner Offense and Red Sox
3:08
Would Mariners take Abrue and Yoshida for Castillo?  A wash in salary, 5 more per year for the Sox....for two offensive upgrades and 5 years of control on Abreu.
Darragh McDonald
3:09
Hmm. At first blush and in a vacuum, I don't hate this. But the M's have said they don't plan to trade a starter and I believe them. The front five is really good but they don't have much depth.

3:10
It sounds like, if they keep Soto, the Yankees would prefer Judge in CF and Dominguez in LF (barring another addition).  Does the defensive upgrade justify the wear and tear on Judge in center?
Darragh McDonald
3:11
I would be surprised if they kept Judge in center for much longer. Pretty amazing that he could do it at all but the defensive metrics were pretty rough in 2024.
3:12
That could explain why they kept Trent Grisham around for $5MM next year.

3:13
Am I wrong in thinking the market will speed up in a hurry once Soto signs? Who would be next you think, maybe Burnes or Santander?
Darragh McDonald
3:13
I think it's possible, sure. Once Soto's done, all the teams will be pivoting to Plan B.
3:14
Burnes or Santander are fine guesses. Teoscar makes sense as well.

What’s the largest market that currently lacks an MLB team?  The smallest market that has one?  Understanding that drawing lines around a “market” can be subjective.
Darragh McDonald
3:15
Per MLB's calculations in the CBA, the smallest market is Milwaukee. Full list here...
3:17
As for the largest without one, as you alluded to, there are a lot of things that can go into it. What's the population? How near is it to an existing MLB team? What's the economy like? Etc.
3:18
These two articles will probably be good reads for you...

Emilio Pagan for Alec Bohm, who says no?
Darragh McDonald
3:19
Phils can get more than that for Bohm.
