The Cease deal was actually right around what we predicted.
2:19
We had seven years and $189MM in our Top 50. Cease got 7/210 in terms of sticker price. But with the deferrals, it's actually more like 7/182.
So, I wouldn't be totally re-evaluating anything based on one deal which came in very close to what we expected.
2:21
Sidenote, I am so relieved that we were close on Cease. We debated that number a lot and had him at 3/93 with opt-outs for a while. I was one of the ones pushing him for a longer commitment. I'm glad I didn't make MLBTR look stupid!

Tucker or Bichette for the Jays?  I say Tucker, because Clement and Berger need to play.
Darragh McDonald

I don't see why Bichette would block Clement or Barger. Those guys all co-existed throughout 2025. If Bichette is at second, you could have Clement at third and Barger in the outfield.

So, since SD isnt such a small market anymore, is their alleged financial problems just because of no cable deal?  They have set attendance records 3 years in a row and apparently are about to start pawning stuff off to pay salaries (exaggerating of course)

I think it's a combination of factors.
2:24
Even though they are not a small market, it seems like Peter Seidler still allowed them to spend beyond their means. Perhaps that was because of his health but that's speculative on my part.
2:25
In September of 2023, which was actually a few months before Peter died, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the Padres were "out of compliance with MLB regulations regarding their debt service ratio.”
2:26
2023 was the year their cable deal fell apart, so that presumably paid a part in it, yeah.
2:27
Put it all together and it seems like the Friars were already being a bit reckless, then lost a big chunk of revenue. Since then, Preller has been kind of spinning plates to keep the thing afloat without any money to work with.

Since you guys are obviously much brighter than I, please explain this to this Tigers fan…
I keep reading that 'trading Skubal is a step back for Detroit'.  Blanket statement.

But doesnt it depend on the return?
Granted, every 5th game the starting pitcher wont be as good... 32 times in the season.

But if Detroit gets a mid-level starter, and one or two bats (162 games) or relief arms better than what they have now, isnt the NET a positive for Detroit? And then if a minor leaguer is added to the mix?

Well, the thing is that Skubal is only controlled for one more year. Any team acquiring him will be in win-now mode. Why would this team give up the pieces that make them worse in 2026?
2:29
The most logical trade scenario would be a bunch of prospects, or at least younger and less-proven guys. Then this acquiring team would feel they are likely hurting themselves in the long run but making a big upgrade in 2026.
For the Tigers, that would make them worse in 2026 but help them in the long run.
2:30
The argument against a trade is that the Tigers shouldn't be picking that lane. They just made the playoffs two years in a row. You have one more year with this huge difference maker. The future is now.
2:31
Okay, I'm on the feed in half an hour and need to eat something first, so I have to call it.
Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend if that's what you're up to.
As always, thanks so much for supporting the site!
