Truth in Love

Good morning Gerry.  The Steelers have so many position groups that need addressed this offseason: QB, OL, WR, DL, and DB.  Which ones do you think will be top priorities in the draft and free agency?
Gerry Dulac
10:14
DLine and WR
Marty
10:14
Pickens is too good a talent to trade and he's the only WR we have.  Do you think Tomlin and others can finally get through to him to start to act like professional and quit the childish antics?
Gerry Dulac
10:14
Nope

happy Wednesday Gerry! After this hard to watch 5 game span. What would be the 5 most important changes Steelers need to do
Gerry Dulac
10:16
1) Petition for a 13-game season; 2) schedule all playoff games at home, 3) request to never play the Chiefs, Bills and Ravens, 4) Start the game in the third quarter, 5) Draft the next Cam Heyward.

For those of us who never met him, would you share your thoughts on how Dan Rooney’s reaction to the Steelers’ performance in recent years might have differed from his son’s reaction?  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
10:17
I'm sure it would be like his son's -- he wouldn't like it.

Hi Gerry, I have seen it reported that Russ & Art had friction. Do you have any more details on that? I know Russ had issues with other OCs in Seattle but if the friction was caused by Russ being frustrated with the ultra conservative game plan then How can you argue with him.
Gerry Dulac
10:20
Friction is a strong word. But there was some type of disconnect between the way Wilson wanted to play and the way Smith wanted him to play. Not uncommon. Think Ben-Haley, Ben-Canada, Pickett-Canada.

10:20
Are the Steelers hesitant to move on from assistant coaches before their contracts expire?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
Sometimes.

When will the Steelers make a decision on Harris? I know he is likely to not be signed but what is the timetable on his situation?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
March 12 is the start of free agency, so not before then probably
Sunner in Orlando from Lebo
10:21
Is there a chance Holcomb comes back next year or are they just gonna re-sign Roberts and let Holcombe go?
Gerry Dulac
10:22
Not sure what the plans are for Holcomb after signing Queen and drafting Payton Wilson. Roberts, though, is a run-stuffer so he might be brought back.

Is there really any reason to think that things will be any better next season, given that the same people will be making all the decisions from personnel (drafting to signing free agents to trades) to development and utilization of that personnel? I don’t want to spend months reading and talking about the Steelers only to go thru this again next season.
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Well, because of your plea, I will scrap my plan to download all my articles from this season and change all the "2024s" to 2025 and all the "Wilsons" to "Fields" when I submit my stories next season.
Sunner in Orlando from Lebo
10:26
Lots of Steelers on defense that are probably not gonna be re-signed. Any chance Fitzpatrick or Watt gets traded or are they running it back with both?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
Like a short kickoff, they are running it back
Jeff M
10:26
Do you think the starting QB next season is either Russ or Fields? If they are going to keep playing risk adverse offense then they should probably go with Fields. If they are going to open up the playbook and throw early instead of waiting until they get behind then I think Russ is the best options. How do you think they should proceed?
Gerry Dulac
10:27
I think it will be one or the other. None of the outside options are any more intriguing

Many rave about the Steelers ability to find WR’s. Maybe there is a reason many of them are available and have short Steelers careers. Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:28
Maybe it's the type they are finding. Or the way they behave once they get here

Good morning Gerry - Looking at the past 18 years of draft picks, it’s actually amazing to me MT has had a winning record over those 18 years. What say you? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:28
No matter how anyone wants to cut it, never having a losing season really is remarkable.
Linebacker Lounge
10:28
McCarthy to Steelers as an offensive advisor to assist Artie. Local guy returns home - Any chance?
Gerry Dulac
10:29
Mike McCarthy isn't coming in to be anyone's assistant. Unless it's assistant head coach
Johnny D
10:29
Gerry, respect your word as the light shinning through the fog, and there’s plenty of that. What’s up with Tomlin’s coaching tree or lack there of?  Surrounding himself with “yes” people?
Gerry Dulac
10:29
Maybe the tree needs some water and sunlight

Gerry, looking more and more like a good chance Fields is the starter next year. The games that he won were certainly not high scoring by any means. If next year brings a much improved receiving corps do you think he has a chance to become the franchise qb? You’ve covered camp and all, can he throw the deep ball with success?
Gerry Dulac
10:31
Franchise QB is a strong word, so I'd hold off on that one. But he threw the deep ball better than I thought. And, yes, a better receiving corps would help

My nightmare is Deion to Dallas, drafts his son and trades Dak to Pittsburgh and covers some of the contract ala Denver. Tell me this won’t happen?
Gerry Dulac
10:31
OK, I will -- it won't happen

Just curious as to how NFL teams determine who "insiders" are and how they funnel info to them? Thank you sir!
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Teams do not funnel info to the "insiders" to whom you refer. The "insiders" develop a trust/relationship that allows them to obtain information. But always keep this in mind: There is a huge difference between the people who think they know something and the ones who actually do.

The comments Jim Rooney made explain precisely the state of the Steelers.  Just happy to win more than you lose.  Keep filling the seats and all is well.  Like society just give participation trophies.  You would think someone in that building would have the courage to speak up and tell Art this is not working if we want a championship.  So until season ticket sales drop drastically SOS.  Thanks for the chats.
Gerry Dulac
10:35
And thanx for that!

Good day Gerry, I enjoyed your article about Fields. I believe he is the obvious choice. The Steelers should not blow a draft pick by reaching in the 4th or  greater rounds, they simply have too many needs. That said, Fields would flourish in a true RPO offensive system like Daniels in D.C. Fields is faster, built stronger and just as shifty. But, I think Tomlin and Smith will not change the offensive system to fit the athlete. Which a good coaching staff would and should do. The Steelers have not used Fields properly IMHO. The Steelers never pulled tackles and guards to open holes for him something the Eagles do with Hurts. Instead the Steelers run a zone blocking scheme and expect Fields to seek his own hole. This sometimes leads to wack a Fields. What's your take Gerry ?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
My take is your take was pretty good. But, to edit, they do pull tackles and guards, maybe more so than running a zone blocking scheme
