In years past the DL always raved, supported and rightfully so, about coach Mitch. I never heard the same about Karl. Is a change in order or am I way off? Obviously there is a need for personal upgrade. Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:37
A lot of things have to change, starting with the personnel

Fields is the obvious choice to return. Barring a trade with Arizona and MT’s “mobile” QB. Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
Arizona?

GM Gerry - What would your offer look like to keep fields? I think it makes most sense to use the cap room/draft to build talent around the QB position (specifically the trenches on both sides and WRs), give fields the ball, and draft a young guy this year/next year. What say you?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
Not a bad plan, but might be easier said than done

With the way the secondary seemed so easy to pick apart in many games this year, do you think we could see two big free agent signings back there this summer - a #2 CB and an upgraded slot CB?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
I do not. There are never two "big" FA signings at the same position. I wouldn't rule out one.

Hi, Gerry. As far as I know, nobody has defended the Steelers or the coach as much as I have but admittedly, I’m starting to break. My biggest concern might be the regression of individual players and the team as a whole. JPJ, Benton, Bush, O-linemen…people tend to forget that Artie Burns had a “decent” rookie season. Also, the trends on both sides of the ball over several coordinators has been alarming. If they go into 2025 w Justin as a starter and then we have to hear about him not throwing over the middle, not being permitted to check out of plays, etc., I’m going to scream. Perhaps the biggest is this mind-game thing of if it worked last time, we can’t possibly do it again because they’ll be on to us. When Freiermuth carved up the Bengals in the first matchup against the Bengals in 2023, I KNEW he would not play a significant role in the second. If I know that, how does Cincy not? It’s all getting very old! Thanks for letting me vent!

Good vent Alan!! Use some of that heat to melt your snow!

In my opinion a great ST player - 93 seems like a great run stopper in limited opportunities. Is he too small or can’t seem to grasp the passing game. Why can’t this guy get on the field?
Gerry Dulac
10:41
That's the least of their problems

Gerry, MT made it a point to mention all of the soft tissue injuries the Steelers suffered this season.  Is he the only coach in America who can get away with hiring his son's college strength and conditioning coach and then publicly criticizing the job he did?
Gerry Dulac
10:41
And what does that tell you??
Rich
10:41
Hi Gerry thanks for the chats! From what you know does MT micromanage the Coordinators so much that they don't have the autonomy to do their jobs?
Gerry Dulac
10:43
I think Mike Tomlin would say he micro-manages every aspect of his team, which, to a degree, he should as the head coach. Safe to say, he micro-manages the defense more so than any other unit.

If schemed correctly and better OL play, the Steelers tandem is good enough and comparable to Detroit tandem. Fill needs elsewhere in draft and FA (DL, CB, WR). Najee 71 starts / 71 games, similar player as Montgomery. Warren a poor mans Gibbs. Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:44
I'd say you're crazy. Jaylen Warren is not Jahmyr Gibbs by any stretch.

pickens on way out?
Gerry Dulac
10:44
I'm not going to tell you it's imminent or anything like that. But I'd hold off buying his jersey

Gerry it has been said that MT won with Cowher's players, but as I think about it he also won with Cowher's coordinators back when the coordinator still had autonomy to run their own schemes. As Tomlin has accrued more and more power this has changed. If that is correct changing assistant coaches is fruitless!
Gerry Dulac
10:45
It can be perceived that way if you are in that camp.

10:45
Gerry, are the Steelers going to fire any coaches with term left on their contracts? How cheap is Art II?
Gerry Dulac
10:46
To be determined.

great chats, a reason to buy the paper

Can a team trade cap space for a player or a draft choice?  It seems to me that this could be a useful tool in building a competitive team especially those that are stuck in mediocrity.  Tell me if you will, whether this is a good idea or a bad idea and if it has ever been suggested at an owners meeting.
Gerry Dulac
10:47
No

Mike McCarthy hired by Bangels to coach OL! Steelers lose out again on hiring quality coach as assistant. A guy from Pgh, SB winning coach, an offensive play caller, and if got along with Jerry Jones he surely would have with Tomlin. What the heck are they thinking or are they?
Gerry Dulac
10:48
Uh, that's Michael McCarthy, not Mike McCarthy. Different guy

Please publish my Fields question.

I think I did. But I don't take requests.

Imagine if you will. It's 2069. Tomlin is 97 years old and coaching from an assisted living facility despite no playoff wins in 52 years. Some Rooney touts "we've only had 3 coaches in the last 100 years. The Standard is the Standard!". Farfetched?

MT pumped his chest and said “that’s why he’s paid the big money” after making the QB change. How come he doesn’t cite the same after another playoff dismantling of HIS defense? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:52
I will say this -- Mike Tomlin has always been accountable for his own actions. He does not shy from understanding the fault lies with him because he hires the coaches, he helps draft the players and sign them in free agency, he sets the theme for the game plans. No matter what happens, I believe he knows the blame ultimately goes back to him.

Gerry do you think Fields will return? Barring a QB in the draft (which I don't see) I don't see any other options out there that are an upgrade. I don't think Wilson will be back but I could be wrong
Gerry Dulac
10:53
I do. And I think you're reasoning is spot on

Gerry, you are as familiar with this franchise and the Rooneys as perhaps anyone else in media at this point. Maybe this topic is so far down the road that it isn't worth discussing in January 2025, but with AR2's approach to staff not likely to change at this point, I'm looking down the road to his son Dan's ascension to chair. Do you have any indication that his well-rounded and impressive resume will mean a different approach to the way the team is ran? And, do you have any sense of when the transition will take place?  No timetable has been publicly disclosed at this point, so I'm guessing it's still several years away?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
I'm guessing it won't change a lot, just as it didn't change a whole lot from the Chief to Dan Rooney to AR2. But that doesn't mean young Dan wouldn't have a different perspective/approach in how things can be done. Whatever is it, and whenever it is, the franchise will continue to be in good hands with Art's son.
