Do you agree with the premise that we need to give Kenny another chance with a new OC to see if he is the future?  My opinion is that the things that seem to be an issue with Kenny (Pocket presence, escaping into pressure, Steelers desire for a running QB option but he does not run, lack of accuracy, arm strength, inability to locate open receivers, etc.) do not seem like issues that will get corrected with a new OC.  After watching the playoffs, we need a top tier QB if we are ever going to have playoff success.

He gets one more year. Then, after three years, teams usually know if they want to go forward with him or not. It's kinda why Mike Tomlin said it's a "huuuge" year for Pickett, and he emphasized huge (in case you didn't get my usage).

Who will have the most say in the OC hire? Tomlin Rooney or Khan?
Gerry Dulac

Mike Tomlin has all the say in his coaching hires. Of course, AR2 has to sign off on his choice.

I think MT made coming back to Pgh sound as unappealing to Rudolph as possible. During our run, he only referred to MR as the “hot hand” while refusing to acknowledge he was the starter. He stated that MR had a lot of confidence in himself, as opposed to saying that he (Mike Tomlin) had confidence in Rudolph. Then at the season ending press conference, he said KP would be starter in the offseason, but there would competition, and adding “There’s always competition”, which brings to mind the fallacious open QB competition in 2022 in which MR was never truly given and equal opportunity to compete. Isn’t the most reasonable conclusion for MR is that he would have a better opportunity to truly compete for a starting QB job somewhere else like Denver,  Atlanta, Las Vegas, or NYG?

I love the point about "Mason has a lot of confidence in himself," but......I also think the "competition" comments about training camp were also something of a sales pitch for Rudolph. He might not be so inclined to re-sign if Tomlin said Pickett is the starter and there would be no competition.

Hi Ger, what are you hearing on coach Austin's future with Steelers?
Gerry Dulac
12:05
I'm hearing he will be back.

Hi Gerry,
The Steelers are one of the few teams that I think have a long-followed and mostly successful football philosophy. On offense, that is to run the ball and set up big plays (deep throws) in the passing game. Do you think this keeps them from trying to hire a coordinator who has run a more modern offense — someone more in the McVay or Shannahan mold? Or do you think they might be open to anything that results in success?
Gerry Dulac
12:06
They are open to whatever Mike Tomlin thinks results in success. I'm not going to sit here and dismiss the job Canada did in 2 1/2 years, but he was also given marching orders how to run the offense by the head coach.

Good morning Gerry! Seems that the Steelers are bringing in Zac Robinson for an interview for OC. Tomlin mentioned he wanted someone with experience as OC. Robinson doesn't have that. Do you expect more interviews from guys like Zac or more of a Kliff Kingsbury type? Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
12:07
Mike Tomlin said previous experience running an NFL offense was preferable. Doesn't mean it's an absolute.

OK kids, have gone overtime so just one-word answers from here on out......

GD: Thank you for the chat. Watching the Chiefs and Creed Humphrey’s snaps that hit Mahomes in the hands every time, do the Steelers regret no taking him with the 2nd pick rather than Muth? He’s a good tight end but Humphrey is an anchor for 10-12 years on an OL.  Your take?

Going back to MT's assertion that it was solely his decision to terminate Canada, assuming your reporting is accurate, which I believe, doesn't that make MT purposely deceitful at best?

What's more defining for coach Tomlin, never having a losing record in the regular season or in his 17 seasons only winning a playoff game in 4 seasons?

I don’t really understand why no one is talking about the defense.  Everyone seems to think the offense is the only real issue, and yes I know the D had lots of injuries. But, when you look at the opponents scores in the previous four or five playoff games they have allowed over forty points in three of them and over thirty in the other two.

Gerry, please explain how the powers that be cannot clearly see that KP does not have the arm talent to lead his team to the promise land? All tired references to Trent Dilfer aside. Thanks.

Gerry, I realize that we are already over a week from the Steelers/Bills game, but was anything ever said about the late hit Bills #55 laid on Joey Porter Jr. that resulted in JPJ's concussion?  I feel that absolutely should have been flagged for unnecessary roughness.  What say you?  Was there a fine levied?
Gerry Dulac

Probably

Thanks for the chats Gerry.  Watched most of the games last weekend and we arent even close from an offense perspective.  Game flow, big plays, and I actually saw WIDE OPEN receivers.  I can count on one hand how many the steelers had all season.  I am trying to hold out hope but do you really think a new OC and a better Pickett puts us in the Balt/Buf/Bills category.  I just cant see it

If my question about MR having a better opportunity to start in Denver, Atlanta, Vegas or NYG gets posted, isn't MT's messaging to Rudolph a passive aggressive approach to telling to move on unless he's willing to accept a backup role?

Love hearing you on DVE! Why wouldn’t the Steelers bring in Matt Ariza since all charges against him have been dropped? We need a punter.

Hi Gerry, in your article about changes to the Steelers' staff, you mentioned that Sullivan likely would't be retained; but I don't think you said anything about Faulkner.  He might not have called plays but he was the one named "offensive coordinator."  It seems likely he would be gone too but perhaps the success of the running backs makes him valuable to keep as a run game coordinator or something.  What do you think they will do?

Good Morning, Gerry. If Denver does in fact release Russell Wilson and still pay him what he's due, Won't teams still have to outbid the other teams wanting him and pay him a decent salary? people think he's just gonna sign for the veteran minimum and it'll be easy.

Hello Gerry,  Is Frank Reich a possibility?  I have not seen his name mentioned as a possible OC candidate in local or national coverage.

Who do you think is a realistic option to add to the QB room? Wilson, Cousins, Fields, Tannahill, none of the above? Is Rudolph more likely that any that I listed?

Rudolph

With Cole Holcomb owed $ 6 million next year and highly unlikely to play effectively coming off a serious knee injury, if at all, shouldn't the Steelers just cut him and use the money elsewhere on a healthy free agent linebacker? Why would they keep Holcomb knowing he likely won't be worth $ 6 million next year?
