Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 01.24.24

With all the chat about us getting a Vet QB, can we afford a Russell Wilson, Baker Mayfield, etc?  Secondly, I'm a little tired of playing with other's old toys.  Can we get our own?
Gerry Dulac
11:46
They do have their own -- Pickett and Rudolph. They are not going to sign Baker Mayfield, who will re-sign with Tampa Bay; and I doubt Russell Wilson wants to go somewhere where he isn't at least competing for the starting job.
Rudolph the Steeler's Best QB
11:47
People are saying they want ro see what Pickett is capable of when not being coached by Canada.  Do be people forget that Rudolph as had Fichtner and Canada has OCs? Wouldn't it be interesting to see what Rudolph could do with a legit OC assuming the Steelers hire one?
Gerry Dulac
11:47
I think we saw what he could do with an offensive system he didn't like.

Hi Gerry, as a HOF voter, would you say that Mahomes and T. Kelcey are automatic first ballot inductees regardless of what happens this weekend?
Gerry Dulac
11:48
Without question. Not even up for debate. Rubber-stamped.

Hello Gerry, any updates on coach Danny Smith? Has he gotten his rotator cuff surgery?
Gerry Dulac
11:48
If he hasn't already, he will be getting it.

Baltimore became a different team when they traded for Roquan.  Shouldn't our money go into the interior part of our defense?  Hell, Mortgage the house the for a Fred Warner type player.
Gerry Dulac
11:48
Yes they did.

Gerry, Once again the final four have either a 4-3 D (three of them) or a 3-4 D (the Ravens) where they actually use the 3-4  85 to 90% of the snaps and they have a real nose tackle.Gee what does that say about a team that uses the 3-4 less than 30% of the time? Perhaps such a team will never again make the final four let alone the Super Bowl.
Gerry Dulac
11:49
Good point, if your percentages are correct

How do you get excited as a fan about another few years of Mike Tomlin? His deficiencies in the last decade are glaring: (1) poor player evaluation (picks like Edmunds, Bush, Burns); (2) weak coaching staff — no coaching tree after 17 years is a bit preposterous; (3) inability to develop any consistent offense for 5 years now, including horrible evaluation of Trubisky vs, Pickett vs. Rudolph; (4) no playoff wins in 7 years and only in 4 post seasons in 17 years. He has certainly been solid (though far from great) but isn’t it time for some fresh thinking and energy?
Gerry Dulac
11:51
As a fan, I would imagine it is tough to get excited about a coach who has lost five consecutive playoff games since 2016. But, as you know, there are a lot of other fans who love having a coach who has them in the running year after year after 17 years.

Gerry. Ed Bouchette and Peter King both think the Steelers could sign Russell Wilson. Those are a couple of heavy hitters. Are they onto something?
Gerry Dulac
11:51
I never said they could. But I might know a little bit more about it than they do

11:52
Gerry, is it reasonable to think that a new offensive scheme and coordinator can unlock the first round potential from Kenny P? Or, is that just wishful thinking?
Gerry Dulac
11:52
It could, depending on what you think that "first-round potential" could be.

Greetings Gerry, what does off season look like for you? Alot of golf I assume?
Gerry Dulac
11:52
That will be forthcoming

Who do you think the players in the locker room want to be QB1  next year?  Guys like Najee, DJ, Pickens and Mitch are either in contract years or close. Don’t they want a guy who can make the offense go?
Gerry Dulac
11:53
They all want a QB who can make the offense go.

Do you think the top priority for hiring the next OC would be a track record of developing QB's?
Gerry Dulac
11:54
That's probably all part of having a successful offense. It can't be successful without a QB who doesn't flourish or develop.

Hi Gerry I am hearing rumors that Dobbs is going to be backup QB and a draft pick number 3 so no pressure on KP and no chanting for another qb. Have you heard anything?
Gerry Dulac
11:54
Nope. But nothing surprises me.

11:54
Since the Steelers finally have a competent GM do you think 2 more drafts should be enough to have as much talent as the Ravens?
Gerry Dulac
11:55
They had a more-than-competent GM before, too, in case you hadn't noticed.
Steven Austin

Among known candidates for the OC job-Kingsbury, Robinson, Arthur Smith-who is most likely to get hired?
Gerry Dulac
11:55
Too early for me to anoint.

Hello Gerry. Who would designate as the favorite to be the Steelers next offensive coordinator?
Gerry Dulac
11:56
I need a little more time, thank you

The Steelers have so many needs, C, T, D-Line, CB, ILB, Punter, possibly strong safety and QB.  Not all can be addressed in the draft.  Which positions do you think they will attack in free agency? I hope they get a WR3 in free agency like Boyd who would be a leader and a hard worker.
Gerry Dulac
11:58
That's a possibility. They need four really capable, productive WRs and I think they have only three. Do you know the Packers keep at least eight -- eight!! -- wide receivers on their 53-man roster?? And they try to use all of them. A good offense is loaded with skill players. That means more WRs

Gerry--Thanks for checking the mail. It would appear that Steelers Nation has been condemned to an even longer string of non-losing seasons with occasional playoff appearances. If that's the new "standard" I'm wondering how longer the most loyal fanbase in sports will hang in there before we see empty seats at Acrisure and fewer terrible towels swirling at away games. That unfortunate reality may be the only thing that motivates ARII to replace a popular head coach with a more effective head coach. Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:59
I hear ya, and that would be a concern. But after all this time, I've seen no dearth of Terrible Towels, especially on the road.

Gerry, did HC Mike T really ever consider walking away this year like national reports indicated? Was it all just a leverage move for contract negotiations?
Gerry Dulac

No and no
