Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 01.27.21

Here is my plan: cut Ben, which basically gets us to the new cap.Cut a bunch of other guys in the 5 to 8 million range (Pouncey, Haden, etc). Obviously don’t bring back Bud or JuJu. Sign some guys I think can help, and draft the rest. What is the flaw in my plan? I’ll be able to hit the free agent market big time the following year and probably win just as many next season without pushing the cap down the road.
Gerry Dulac
11:15
That's why you're not a GM
Patrick
11:15
If Pouncey retires, it just adds to the positions the Steelers need to address in the draft. Not advocating for him to come back or retire, but does it change the Steelers priorities for the draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:15
yes, or in free agency. A center is a must. They don't have a capable starter on their roster.
TC
11:15
Hi Gerry,Do you think that there will be a larger number of free agents in the market this year as teams try to get under the lower cap?
Gerry Dulac
11:16
Absolutely there will be -- and they will carry a large number.
TC
11:16
If there are more free agents and a lower cap, will that decrease what those free agents are offered? Maybe there is an opportunity for the Steelers to keep some of there own free agents or find some on the cheap?
Gerry Dulac
11:17
Depends. Team who have plenty of salary-cap room can still offer big money and probably have less competition from other teams for that player. You will still see some big contracts in free agents, just not as many of them.

The choice of Canada has me a little conflicted.  Do you think this is a conservative, more of the same by the Steelers - or do you believe it is OH, CANADA!?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
I think it shows they are eager to adapt more of the college-style offense that has filtered into the NFL.
Lenny

Any insight on what happened to hiring the O-line coach before O Coordinator?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
They will hire him any day now. I think the order changed when they knew they were promoting Canada.

What are the odds the Steelers go QB with their first round pick?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Almost zero

Question: How do I get over the fact that both Leveon Bell and Antonio Brown will be in the Super Bowl, having gotten there by being malcontents?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
Hate to tell you, there are a lot of them in the league. And do not lump Bell into the same category as Brown. Their behaviors are not even close. Brown in a league of his own with his insubordination.
Jason

Do you think the Steelers think they have their running back situation taken care of or do you see them potentially going running back early in the draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
I do not think they think that at all. Not by an stretch of the imagination.. You will see a complete overhaul of what they do.
Robbo

Mornin’, Gerry. The defensive collapses at the end of the past several seasons are frustrating. We all know that this is Tomlin’s D, so what--if any--differences can we expect on defense with so few coaching changes? Or will this continue to be Einstein's definition of insanity? Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:24
So few coaching changes? By my count, there have been four already. And, I hate to tell you, they finished third in the league in defense in 2020, playing without Bush and Dupree. I'm not dismissing their issues, but I suggest you pay attention to the rest of the league to see what bad defenses really are.

Do you get the sense that Tomlin's future w/ the team ties in with Colbert?  Tomlin's contract runs thru 22 as Colbert is more of a year by year basis.  Do you think 2022 Steelers really blow it up and hire new combo GM and coach?
Gerry Dulac
11:25
It could, but it just might be coincidental. It could also tie to Ben's tenure with the team.
Jason
11:25
What was once considered a young elite O Line that now seems to be aging and deteriorating, is it time for the Steelers to concentrate on rebuilding that line through the draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:25
They will.
lamberto55
11:25
with possible replacement gaurds and tackles already in house if pouncey retires wouldn't it make sense to draft a center eaqrly in the draft
Gerry Dulac
11:25
They will. Or sign one in free agency
Ben from “cold” Los Angeles

Good morning Mr Dulac.  Thank you for your time and insights.  When speaking with your colleagues that cover teams from other cities, do you find that Steelers fans differ from others in terms of their expectations, realism, and perhaps feelings of gratitude?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
I think fans are fans. They are the same in every city where football is beloved.

If Ben is trying to convince Pouncy to come back, does that mean Ben has decided to return? I still believe in Ben if he had a better oline and run game.
Gerry Dulac
11:27
Ben is not trying to convince Pouncey to return, but I'm sure he is telling him to take his time and think about his decision.

Hi Gerry I went ahead and did some homework of the worst team rushing attacks over the previous 11 years and their record and team QBR.
2020 Steelers 12-4 QBR 93.5
2019 Dolphins 5-11 QBR 80
2018 Cardinals 3-13 QBR 69
2017 Lions 9-7 QBR 98.4
2016 Vikings 8-8 QBR 97.7
2015 Lions 7-8 QBR 95.1
2014 Raiders 3-13 QBR 74.4
2013 Falcons 4-12 QBR 89.5
2012 Cardinals 5-11 QBR 63.1
2011 Giants 9-7 QBR 92.9
2010 Cardinals 5-11 QBR 60.5
Steelers have the best record easily of the bunch and aside from a in his prime Stafford and an out of nowhere decent Sam Bradford season in 2016, no QB had a better year then Ben. Why are we tossing him to the curb? Keep most of the D and improve the run game and I think we have a shot. What say you?
Gerry Dulac
11:28
Pay this guy!!
Salvador
11:28
Good Morning Jerry! Have you known about potential replacements for the QB, OL and DBs
Gerry Dulac
11:28
Too early for that. And the only replacements among DBs will be determined by salary cap, not by performance.
Jeff
11:29
Why are  Steeler fans so negative.  Move Ok to LT, Banner right, dotson decastro guards, sign a center, draft Harris if he is there.  Fix the running game.  Left Juju walk and get another WR in the draft.  Highsmith was better than Dupree's rookie year.  If you have to let Haden go sign Sutton.  I get we wont be deep in some positions because of the cap but if we can do all that and manage how many passes Ben has to make don't we have a legitimate shot in the playoffs?
Gerry Dulac
11:29
Who let this excellent perspective into the chat??
Brice
11:29
Any validity to the Mark Madden story on TJ skipping his exit interview? Feels like it is being exaggerated on Maddens’s part.
The Dude
11:30
I believe I am like most Steeler fans and do not consider an 8-8 season, or even a 11-5 season, to be a success without at least one playoff win. This being the case, wouldn’t it be better to have one year with 3 wins, allowing a high draft position and money to spend on free agents?
Gerry Dulac
11:30
They don't believe in that thinking and never will. That's why they have been the most successful franchise since the 1970s.
Grandpa
11:30
hypothetically speaking, if you were a GM what would you give up for Stafford or Watson?
