Have you heard if the Steelers wide receivers are bummed out about Arthur Smith being the offensive coordinator as their numbers might not be as high vs a more pass oriented coordinator?
Gerry Dulac
10:24
Not at all. Most are thrilled it's anyone other than Matt Canada

Who would’ve been your number one choice for offensive coordinator
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Probably Bill Walsh

Chances Mike Vrabel is added to the coaching staff in a similar capacity as Brian Flores was a few years ago? I also feel like adding former head coaches to the staff has worked out well in the past and wish it would happen more often.
Gerry Dulac
10:27
Any time you add a former head coach to a staff is a big plus. That's one of the other positives about hiring Arthur Smith. I like Mike Vrabel and am surprised some teams didn't snatch him up for one of their HC openings. It would be a great move for the Steelers. But I don't see that happening.

Hey Gerry. In the modern NFL, do you think stopping the passing game is more helpful having shutdown corners or having a DL that puts tons of pressure on the QB?  If you had to have a D that leans one way, which one ?
Gerry Dulac
10:27
CBs are only as good as the pressure a defense can generate on a quarterback

Good morning Gerry.  Despite labeled as a grumpy old man, Ron Cook in his retirement announcement had many HOF players, coaches, and broadcasters reach out to wish him well on his radio show.  Many praised his professionalism and personal touch over the years.  I really like Brooke Pryor and her coverage, but I cant imagine Tomlin calling into her retirement announcement wishing her well.  Ron Cook may be fooling us with his old man imagine secretly being a superhero in the Pittsburgh sports icon.

Well, having traveled with Cook for many years and examining his suitcase, I never found a red cape. But it was nice for Ron that all those former players and coaches have called the show to wish him well. I know that touched him. As to your other point, what makes you think Mike Tomlin would never call Brooke Pryor??

What salary cap casualties do you see as a
Gerry Dulac

Big Lebo, your question got cut off but I get the gist. The biggest will be Chuks Okorafor, who is owed $8.75 million next season. Then it will be Allen Robinson and Mitch Trubisky, who between them are owed $18.5 million in real money in 2024.

Couple trade questions: Should the Steelers trade Johnson to free up cap space and pursue Tee Higgins?  Would you trade a second or third round pick for Fields?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
That cap space that would free up for DJ ($12.8 million) would quickly be negated by what it would cost to sign Higgins. And I would trade a third-round pick for Fields, for sure, but there's more to the decision to do so than it might appear.

Hello Gerry.  Being a former head coach, how much influence is Tomlin willing to delegate to Smith to run his offense?  Are we seeing a better version of the Matt Canada offense of run the ball, play conservative,  don't turn the ball over?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
We will see a much better version of whatever it was you watched of Matt Canada's offense. And I think the reason Tomlin hired Smith is because he believes his philosophy meshes well with his own.

I know it is highly unlikely, but would you rather have Russell Wilson or Justin Fields added to the Steelers roster?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Fields. Russell Wilson is on the downside of his career.

Given that most coaches are no better than their starting quarterback, why do owners fire so many great coaches  (like Andy Reed) that have poor starting quarterbacks? Why not keep the coach and look for a better QB1?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Sometimes it's harder to find the QB1

Morning Gerry!  Love the recent podcast with you and Brian. While I agree a stud DL would be priority #1, not sure if the draft is deep enough to get “that” guy at 20. I believe the other too need is center and if the other JPJ from Oregon is available at 20, I believe he needs to be 1B on the needs list.  If they want to give Kenny a real chance, not having low snaps and pressure inside would certainly help Kenny or any other QB we roll out there.  Would be nice to get another stud for next 10 years manning the middle and following in Webby, Dermonti and Pounceys footsteps.  If they want to commit to the ground game, you need an anchor.  Agree?
Gerry Dulac
10:42
I don't disagree with anything you said.

While the Hines Ward was a great WR and would be a popular hire as a coach, what experience/success has he had as a coach? I think Fitzgerald, the consummate professional, would be able to handle our WR room full of divas!
Gerry Dulac
10:46
You mean Larry Fitzgerald? And what makes you think he wants to be a coach. As for Hines, he was an offensive intern coach for part of a season with the Steelers and spent two seasons with the NYJets as an offensive assistant. He spent last season as a head coach in the XFL. OK, it's the XFL, but it's still some tpe of training ground.

Would you categorize Friermuth as a disappointment due to injuries and under utilization? He rarely makes the big plays that we grew accustomed to from Heath Miller.
Gerry Dulac
10:46
Not at all.

ARII is reported to have said that all options are on the table when it comes to the QB position. If available, do you see the Steelers making a play for Justin Fields?
Gerry Dulac
10:46
Never say never

If Arthur Smith's contract is for three years, is it likely that the Steelers extend Tomlin for two years, so they line up?  If the team implodes or (worse?) stays "stuck in middle", the Steelers could clean house and start fresh.  I still would have moved on from Coach Tomlin after this season, but I can see the logic of the above if it should come to pass.  Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:47
Tomlin's contract extension will have nothing to do with the contract Smith signed. There is no correlation.

Would resigning Levi Wallace be a sign of desperation? How do you assess his play? It seems he was always missing tackles that led to big gains.
Gerry Dulac
10:48
I think it will be time to move on.

Gerry- I know you've spoken extensively about the Steelers spending a 1st Riound pick on DL. Any candidates that you’ve noticed yet? And could FA be another way to do this?
Gerry Dulac
10:49
After looking at what's out there in the draft, at least as of right now, there are not a lot of Rd 1 defensive linemen from which to choose. That doesn't mean they won't try to add one of the second round.

Are you surprised Belicheck doesn’t have a job, and do you think he would be good on tv, or his usual grumpy self?
Gerry Dulac
10:50
I am a little bit. But I'm not sure many franchises want to deal with the face he puts forth.

Would GM Dulac take best center or 5th best OT, CB, or a DL with 1st round pick?
Gerry Dulac

Depends who's on the board

Is your passport up to date for the trip to Brazil? A more serious question; James Daniels has played some center. Has there been any serious consideration to moving him there and putting Cole, or someone else at guard?
