why is everyone so high on ben returning, in the last 11 years only 3 playoff wins, isn't time to move on?
Gerry Dulac
11:13
Next.

If Bud isnt offered the franchise tag or cant work out a contract, what are the plans at OLB?   I assume they would have some $ to sign a FA.   Or is there someone on roster already?   Could use $ on another position, OG maybe(Foster has to be done, right?).
Gerry Dulac
11:14
He will be offered the franchise tag.
Gene
11:14
If one of the top OL players are left at pick 49 would you take that over a WR TE RB?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
I wouldn't and I don't think they would, either.

How do the Steelers view the type of analytics Baltimore and now Cleveland are implementing to their programs? Do you see that becoming more prominent in the organization moving forward?
Gerry Dulac
11:16
The Steelers have been using analytics for several years already. And while I think they will continue to become more prominent in the future, I think there is also something to be said for the eye test and gut feelings and good ol' fashion film-study prep.

Do you think Fitzpatrick has the same instincts as Polamalu?
Gerry Dulac
11:16
I don't think anybody had Troy's instincts.

If you were, THE MAN, in charge of filling the needs of the current Steelers, how would you approach, QB, OL, Dupree, inside LBs, RB, TE?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Why not just ask me to go over every position on the team...goodness. But because the sun is shining, I will oblige. QB -- Ben. OL -- FA or third (comp)- or fourth-round pick; Dupree -- tagged; inside LBs -- fine. RB -- Draft a No. 1 back. TE -- Top FA or second-round pick.

Would you like to see Witten on a one year in Pitt? Does that happen in any world we live in? Leadership, blocking, intangible veteran qualities?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Nope. Good guy, but so is Heath Miller and he ain't coming back.

Hi Jerry, I see that the Brown's Joe Schobert  is a free agent. He's a good ballplayer, probably as productive as Bud DuPree.  If he's able to sign for less money do you go after him rather than overpay for Bud?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
Nope. Nice player, but he's not an edge guy either.

Will the 2020 Steelers - Browns games be played at a neutral site with a moat around the field?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
I think the NFL would be wise to schedule their first meeting at Heinz Field and not up there on the lake.

With the likely manuevering to create cap space for Dupree, Steelers arent likely to have any real $ to lure a quality FA, and may lose Hargrove in the process.. right?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
Well, they managed to give Steven Nelson the largest free-agent contracted they have ever awarded in the same year that Antonio Brown counted $21 million against the cap, so....wrong.

Gerry, looks like the Steelers will lose Javon Hargrave to FA. Is it me, or does it seem like this team hasn't been effective defending the run consistently since golden days of Casey Hampton? But when asked about it, Mike T. always gives the excuse sub-package football. Do you think they are putting too much emphasis on playing sub-package Defense and not enough on just playing Defense?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
Tomlin's excuse is right, but that's the problem. You're never going to effectively shut down the run when you're playing sub-package football 70-75 percent of the time.

Hi Gerry, you had stated Steelers should only draft a RB if he is a true every down back.  Besides, Dobbins, Swift and (probably) Taylor, are there any other RB's you consider #1?  And do the Steelers even have a realistic chance at any of them?  Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
11:25
This is true. I'm not sold on Dobbins as that guy, but I think the other two are. I think they could have a shot at one of them if there in a run on QBs, OTs and WRs.

I am so proud of Mike Tomlin's defense of MR in such a professional and thoughtful manner.  The ESPN "panel" was IMO sophomoric.   As a journalist this must be disturbing to you?  What is you sense of how the media community in general has reacted to this?
Gerry Dulac
11:29
I couldn't agree with you more. He should be greatly applauded for being fed up enough with the nonsense being spewed that he went on ESPN to say as much. It was equally significant and powerful that, as an African-American coach, he decried the charge of racism by an African-American player. All the people who rail to me about Tomlin's shortcomings should be proud of their coach. To your point about journalism, there is none with former players who are on TV. The latest moronic comments by Chris Canty and Thomas Davis are prime examples of players making comments about which they klnow absolutely nothing. And social media helps to spread the nonsense with retweets and likes.

According to over the cap, Vince Williams dead money would make releasing him only free up $968,000. With that in mind do you think they are more likely to release Barron? With the hope of Vince Williams working alongside Bush this year and developing Gilbert to take over in 2021?
Gerry Dulac
11:34
I don't think youn understood that properly. If the Steelers cut Vince Williams, they would save $4 million in base salary, but he would still count more than $6 million against the cap. With the way the Steelers play defense, Williams' snaps have declined appreciably. Not just slightly, a lot. Conversely, Barron and Devin Bush play a large majority of the snaps. So unless the Steelers want to play more base defense or focus more on run stopping in their sub-packages (which they won't), nothing is going to change with how much Vince plays.

Ger,  imo, Mason Rudolph should just go about his business and ignore the Cleveland Steamer.  Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
Of course. And that's what he is doing and will do. I think the majority of people see this for what it is -- a man telling a lie that he thinks no one will hear merely to defend his actions and now being unable to runa way from it because it went public.

A week or so ago I thought it was 100% that they will tag Dupree. Now I'm not so sure. Have you heard anything different?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
No I haven't, and I won't. And what makes you think so??

Gerry it seems like from what I read more of the Steeler faithful are leaning more to "Tomlin"  is a pretty good coach. Do you see that from your perspective ? thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:40
Well I think he proved it -- again -- this past season.

Oh yeah going to see Lynn Swann tomorrow as he is the key note speaker for the annual Augusta Chamber of Commerce meeting. When I worked in Bridgeville several of the Steeler greats used to meet for lunch on Friday at a Italian place. Great stories . I forget the name of the place. Thanks again for you chat.
Gerry Dulac

Swannie is a member at Augusta National so I'm not surprised he is speaking there. I wonder which jacket he will wear -- his green one from AN or the gold one from the HOF??

Why are some teams opting out of going to the combine?  I didn't realize that was an option.  Is there a benefit to doing that?
Gerry Dulac
11:44
I think they realize they can watch the drills easier on TV than they can in person. There's no benefit, other than saving on hotel rooms and expenses. Plus, the individual interviews with the players have been shortened. Coaches feel they get to spend more time with the player and get all the additional info they need when they go to the player's pro day. As far as medical information, it is shared with all 32 teams anyway, so it's not like a team needs their doctor there to do the tests.

Hi Gerry, what do you make of this Joe Burrow situation.  If a player doesn't want to be drafted to a bad team then why come out of college?  It's either Cincy or Miami
Gerry Dulac
11:44
Tell that to John Elway and Eli Manning.
