Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 02.19.25

Do you think Eli Manning missing the HOF on the first try is good or bad news for Ben?
Gerry Dulac
11:44
The HOF puts a lot of premium of being a first-ballot selection, which is why I believe Eli didn't make it this year. Not enough people convinced his resume warranted first-ballot. I disagree. Thought he and Luke Kuechly merited induction this year. I bet Eli gets in next year. But I think Ben will be first-ballot. If he isn't, something is wrong IMO. Three Super Bowl appears, two wins, many all-time passing records.

Golf course in the U.S. (not in Pa.) you get to more than once a year?
Gerry Dulac
11:44
Several

we will know our new QB by .....

March 12 to be safe

Any more cuts upcoming for the Steelers (similar to Preston Smith last week)? LB Cole Holcomb or Larry O. perhaps.
Gerry Dulac
11:45
I'm sure there will be

When does your first mock draft come out?
Gerry Dulac
11:46
Steve, I don't do mock drafts. Ray handles those. I merely tell you who the No. 1 pick is going to be
Stairway to seventh seed
11:46
Gerry: does Tomlin's allergy to turnovers and more specifically using the middle of the field and the organizational priority of keeping the non losing streak alive make it impossible for the Steelers to ever patiently develop a young QB?  If you call EVERY play in every game to avoid a turnover on that play and make sure that game is one of 9 wins in that year, I can't imagine any QB ever developing.
Gerry Dulac
11:46
Not sure that's the by-product. But failing to win more than 10 games and a playoff game is a huge by-product of that approach

11:47
Do the Steelers make a run at Aaron Rodgers or take a hard pass?
Gerry Dulac
11:47
Pass
Noah
11:47
Fields or Wilson? Which direction do you think the Steelers are headed and when will this decision be made?
Gerry Dulac
11:48
I'm telling ya, it's almost a tossup because of who thinks what. I saw this play out in 2021 with Ben.
TS
11:48
Gerry, thanks for your chats. Do you think Tomlin actually recognizes the need for him to “stop doing the same thing & expecting a different result?” And
Gerry Dulac
11:48
We can only hope

11:49
Not to play into the constant and draining QB speculation, but would you see any deal - Fields, Wilson, acquiring a Stafford or signing Rodgers - being a two-year one with an eye on having that guy be the starter in 2026 as a drafted QB that year waits in the wings?
Gerry Dulac
11:49
There is merit to what you say, but I don't think that is going to happen with a few of the QBs you suggest

Gerry, I was beginning to think the people in the media don't understand the futility of Art ll management but then last week in answer to a chatter you said,"Their plans are based on IMMEDIACY (emphasis added).......It (the Russell Wilson acquisition) didn't work, but that doesn't mean they are going to change their mind and START PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE"(emphasis added). Wow, you know exactly what the problem is. Hope the Steeler fans realize it is the 1960's all over again and Dan ll and Chuck ll are not in sight.
Gerry Dulac
11:50
I wouldn't call four playoff appearances in the past five seasons the 1960s all over again

11:50
Thanks for the chats Gerry. What 2 position groups are you most interested in seeing? Also, any traditions you and Ray have in Indy like restaurants, etc.?
Gerry Dulac
11:51
DL and WR. And, yes, several restaurants.

Is there a free agent (name) that you see the Steelers targeting heavy on day 1 or 2 of free agency? Eg. Patrick Queen last year.
Gerry Dulac
11:52
Not yet. Patience my son. Soon
Jim Bow Dean
11:52
How much interest would Fields get in free agency? Any team could have traded for him last year and Steelers got him for 6th round pick. Did he really improve is stock that much playing 6 games?
Gerry Dulac
11:53
I think he did. Not drastically, but enough to be more marketable this year. I think teams saw some development with the right coaching and situation
Jim Bow Dean
11:53
Isn’t it a fallacy the Steelers don’t make changes? Since their last playoff win, they’ve had two GMs, two DCs, four OCs, five if you count interim, and six different starting QBs. They also redid the scouting and training staffs and drastically increased free agency spending. There’s nothing left to change but the HC and that won’t happen.

Serious question, what part of the combine is your favorite or most enjoyable in covering it?
Gerry Dulac
11:54
Seriously LL, the best part of the combine is the road back to Pittsburgh.
11:56
OK, now I feel bad (yes, I am capable). He wanted to ask a serious question, so I'm going to give him a serious answer now. Seriously, the reason I go is because most of the NFL coaches and GMs are there and its a good opportunity to see and talk to some of them to 1) network, 2) stumble upon something, 3) learn more about the draft prospects.

Thanks for your insights in these.   At this point, can DeMarvin Leal essentially be written off?
Gerry Dulac
11:56
No, not yet. But he needs to stay healthy and prove something, or he will be written off shortly after that

11:56
ILB - Do you see Roberts and or Robinson returning? Holcomb?
Gerry Dulac
11:57
That's a good question. I think Roberts will return because he is a run-stuffer, and Robinson is a good special teams guy. I will at least say this, all three won't return. Two tops and maybe just one

11:57
So who wins the power struggle over the QB decision?
Gerry Dulac
11:58
Depends who can be won over. But there is only one

Is letting James Daniels walk anywhere affected by the fact that his Achilles can potentially hinder his production as his position? also do you think if a team called about Seumalo the team would entertain them?
