If the Steelers decide to let Haden walk, and cant work out a deal with Witherspoon, any chance they look at CJ Jackson if he doesnt get franchise tagged by Patriots?  He'd be pricey, but is a top 5 CB, and young.
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Hey, anything is possible. But, if Haden leaves because of a better offer, then the Steelers will make even more of an effort to bring back Witherspoon.

How big of an impact do you think Brian Flores will have on the defense?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
I think he is a tremendous hire. Heyward said he thinks Flores' presence will do for the defense what Munchak did for the O-line. I concur.

What is your take on Mickelson?  Very interested in your opinion.
Gerry Dulac
11:21
Not enough space here to fit what I think. But just incredibly stupid, short-sighted and narcissistic. It's a shame. Severely soiled his reputation with that latest "apology."

Hello Gerry!  I do not understand all the pining for Mariota or Trubisky.  I'll take Rudolph over those two (given their history).    Regardless, the passing game is moot if the routes don't extend beyond the line of scrimmage next year.
Gerry Dulac
11:25
I get it. I think Trubisky would be a good addition, not that you immediately anoint him the starter, but you put him in the mix. To your last point, the concerns go well beyond the quarterback and are more about the offense plan and flow in general. I mean, after what you watched last season, especially in the second half of the season when an offense should at least improve not regress, do you have any measure of confidence things will drastically if not magically get better? I don't care who the quarterback is. That's not the issue that needs to be addressed.

Gerry,  Hiring Brian Flores looks good on paper but it has to make the DC feel uneasy.  Plus
Gerry Dulac
11:25
I don't think so.

Sounds like Tuitt may be back, along with Alu Alu. If so, wouldn’t you move defensive line back a bit in draft order? I know it would be nice to get younger there, but there are so many other positions that need attention.
Gerry Dulac
11:26
Nope. That position needs attention more than ANY other. See above reasons

My dream for Steelers would be, use cap space to fix O-line. Then draft 1st LB Devin Lloyd, 2nd round grab  best DL or CB DeMarvin Leal DL TX am or Trent McDuffy CB Wash U if he falls due to his size. I’m hoping he falls. 3rd Chad Muma LB WY Univ. 4th Travis Jones NT Univ Conn. 4th  CB Storm Duck UNC. 5th OLB Mike Tverdov Rutgers Univ. I’d like to go defense all the way if the draft flowing in our direction. Thanks for the q & a. Truly enjoy reading it. Have a blessed day.
Gerry Dulac
11:28
I'll pass that along. O-line should and will be a very high priority in free agency. They drafted two OL in first 4 rounds last year. I doubt they go that direction again. They need to find a quality veteran starter, like a Jeff Hartings or Will Wolford, someone who will cost a little bit of coin but is worth the investment.

Morning Gerry.  Which FAs do you think the Steelers will pursue vs the draft?  CB, S, and ILB considering their lack of success in the draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:29
If they ever draft a cornerback, shame on them
Mike
11:29
Thoughts on current ILB situation?  My gut is telling me to cut Schobert to save the cap space (maybe bring him back at a much reduced salary) and not pick up Bush's 5th year option.
Gerry Dulac
11:30
At the very least Schobert will be forced to take a big pay cut or be released. I'm willing to give Bush the benefit of the doubt, coming off ACL surgery. Give him a year to rebound. Then decide.

After Colbert mentioned the other day that one of his biggest regrets was not adding a veteran presence on the OL last year it seems a certainty they add someone this year in FA. Do you think they look to add at G/C or Tackle? Based on Colbert’s remarks in regard to strength/weakness of draft it seems like G/C would make most sense in FA?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
I think they definitely will, but not based solely on that comment. His reference was to the line being so young -- two rookies and a second-year guard as a starters. They are still young, of course, but not like last year. A proven center would solve some problems.
Tom.
11:36
Gerry,  Kevin is saying the polite things to the press but he and the rest of the Steeler brain trust have to know Rudolph is not the answer and they are in deep trouble if they do not find a capable QB to start?  Seem about right?
Gerry Dulac
11:39
Look, Rudolph is not the answer if you are comparing him to Ben, but I think they believe two things -- 1) with the right defense, they can win 10 games with Rudolph; 2) what's out there, in terms of what's affordable or maybe even draftable, is not better than what they have. And, trust me, they will give Dwayne Haskins, a former  No. 1 pick, every opportunity to be the starter. Not saying he's the answer, but who knows if the Trubiskys and Mariotas of the world are, either?

11:39
A lot of rumours that the Steelers are particularly fond of Malik Willis. Have you heard anything from your sources about that? I personally would love that pick.
Gerry Dulac
11:41
They might be fond of him, but doesn't mean they like him enough to draft him. And that would mean liking him enough to move up to get him. Hey, let's face it, the only reason most, if not all, of these QBs are being mentioned as first-round picks is because the draft crop is terribly weak. Most, if not all, are second-round picks at best.
Tom.
11:41
Gerry,  Why would Mr Rooney not hire a GM now?  A new GM is stuck with his draft pics and has to wait until next year to get his kind of players in place.  Maybe Tomlin controls that as well and so not much will change.  Your thoughts?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
11:44
What's the hurry? Colbert is the GM who has been scouting players since the fall and is the only person who should be doing the job. The person they hire is someone who understands the way the Steelers draft and what they look for in a player. But, if he's "stuck" with a player, as you suggest, I might point up that nearly all the players they draft and sign in free agency are players Tomlin likes, so it won't matter if the GM likes what he has or not.

Good morning Gerry. Ty for the chats. I do not understand the vitriol hate for Mason from both media and fans. He may not be Mahommes like, but who is?  I believe he started 9 games as a rookie and 1 against the Lions, this year on 1 day notice.  IMO, that is not enough to evaluate him. Having said that and Colbert’s remarks, do you have aninaron
Gerry Dulac
11:49
Well, he started eight games and was 5-3 in his second season, not his first. And the only loss he had in 2020 was the season finale in Cleveland when he played very, very well against a desperate team that needed a win to make the postseason. And I think that is enough to evaluate him, at least, get a good idea about him. Ok, maybe not as much as they might like, but enough. The only true measure will be evaluating him over a full season -- how he reacts and responds to the ups and downs of a season.

Shouldn't Deshaun Watson's attorneys be looking to expedite his criminal case such that he can return to football? If he is so innocent, I would think they'd want to get it done. With Flores coming aboard, do you now say 'never say never' about him wearing black and gold in the future?
Gerry Dulac
11:50
One has nothing to do with the other. Watson's issues are criminal.

Do you see the Steelers bringing in a free agent retread QB searching for a second chance a la Tanninhill? Im thinking Trubisky, Marriota, Winston?
Gerry Dulac
11:50
I would rule that out but it won't be Winston.

Big Phil fan but he's really stepped in it this time. Can we rehabilitate his image or is he the selfless jerk his haters have always said he was?
Gerry Dulac
11:51
I'm afraid to do-do he stepped in this time is way too messy.

11:51
Your thoughts on Ryan Clark being so outspoken against Mason Rudolph? Rudolph seems to me to be in an impossible situation moving forward.
Gerry Dulac
11:52
I like Ryan a lot, but not sure why he would make that comment. It's unfair in its most basic form and highly questionable in others.

Devonte Wyatt and Tyler Linderbaum are both sitting there at 20.  Which way do we go?
Gerry Dulac
11:53
Not for the center.

You covered the Maulers, right? Got one good story?
Gerry Dulac

I did not.
