Gerry, while Tomlin will likely call the plays, do you believe the additions of Austin and Flores will lead to a material improvement in the Steeler defensive game planning + scheme?  Flores is highly respected in this area, you would have to believe he will have some impact here, even if Tomlin calls the defense during the game.

Perhaps, but I think the biggest thing that will help is getting Tuitt and Alualu back, which will help the D-line and the inside linebackers.

Hi Gerry, thanks for the chats as usual. Dumb question....how laughable is it to hear all these "experts" almost insist that the Steelers draft a QB THIS year? I understand that's their job to "research" and "predict" but this drafting a QB is so far out there for me. What say you? (I sort of already know haha)
Gerry Dulac
1:47
Not a dumb question, certainly no more dumb than the people who suggest they need to draft a QB, as though any of these prospects are franchise players. They are not. In any other year, they might all be second-round picks.

So did Klemm bolt b/c he didn't like working with Canada?  Was this an isolated incident or is Canada a difficult guy?  I ask b/c his reputation in B10 when he was at Wiscy wasn't great.
Gerry Dulac
1:48
Now who would ever think that???

I read an article a few days ago on NFL dot com saying what a great fit Russell Wilson would be with the Steelers, pairing him with “that defense”. How can these guys think the Steelers have anything close to a strong defense?
Gerry Dulac
1:49
They're right about a good fit. You're right about the strong defense stuff.

Any optimism that Zach Gentry continues to elevate his performance at TE?
Gerry Dulac
1:49
Without question. They like Zach Gentry.

I always liked and respected Ryan Clark but lately he seems determined to make dumb and outrageous comments. Do you suppose he feels it necessary to do so to get attention the way guys like Stephen A do?
Gerry Dulac
1:50
I don't think that's the reason, but he is getting a little over the top with some of the stuff he is saying. That being said, I like Ryan a great deal -- personally and mostly what he has the guts to say on TV.

Hello Gerry.  Do you think hiring Andy would effect/change even a little in their personnel evaluation?  Or is his job simply to supply whatever coach tomlin needs?
Gerry Dulac
1:51
I'm assuming you mean Andy Weidl, and probably not. The person they hire will be a person they feel best fits their personality.

Gerry, even with Tuit returning and assuming they bring on quality youth via the draft for the D-line, they have a real mess at inside linebacker. Do they have enough draft capital to address it considering the needs at O-line, D-line, WR, CB, and possibly Safety?
Gerry Dulac
1:52
The D-line can make some of the mess go away. Probably a lot of it.

Hi Gerry. Of course, we understand that the Steelers don't usually make a "splash" in free agency. Do you see them being more active earlier in free agency this year and if so, any names to keep an eye on?
Gerry Dulac
1:55
I do see them being a little more active because 1) they have the space to do so, and 2) because they need do, especially on the O-line. And, right now, I don't have any concrete names to give you.

Could Devin Bush's struggles last season in part be due to the defensive line being depleted? Get the line shored up and him another year removed from ACL repair he should be much better in 2022. The team dynamics have much to do with individual performance not solely due to what Bush failed to do,  right?
Gerry Dulac
1:56
Correct.

Switching gears from all of the QB and draft talk: I have a hard time judging HOF credentials for linemen...esp offensive linemen.  Do Pouncey and Decastro get in?  If not, why not?
Gerry Dulac
1:56
No and no. Pouncey, though, would have a better chance than DeCastro.

What do you think will be the end result of the Tuitt issue?  Stay or go?
Gerry Dulac
1:57
We'll see. If I'm betting, I say he'll be back. But don't take it to the bank

What's your take on Trubisky being added to the Steelers QB room?
Gerry Dulac
1:57
Maybe the best move they can make

Hello Gerry.  Much of coach Tomlin's success came early on.  How much success does he need to have in the next few years to quiet his critics that accuse him of "winning with Cowher's team?"
Gerry Dulac
1:58
I think that whine is long gone. He just needs to win a playoff game first

Although I like Alex Highsmith, I don’t see him as ever being an elite edge player. If a top flight- can’t pass on edge player were available at 20, could you see the Steelers taking him and perhaps moving Highsmith inside? Do you think Highsmith could successfully make that transition?
Gerry Dulac
1:59
No, I don't see that at all. But I don't think anyone thinks Highsmith can be an elite edge rusher, though I think they think he can be good enough
AverageAl
1:59
I feel like everyone forgets what Colbert likes to do. He likes to use free agency to fill holes/needs with average to good players so he doesn’t go into any draft needing a position. Just my opinion is he won’t go into the draft needing a QB. He’ll take one if he’s there and if not, he’ll have someone they feel is competent enough.
Gerry Dulac
1:59
That is 110 percent correct. They use free agency to alleviate their draft needs.

That's all the time we have today kids. Have to get back to the combine stuff. Bye now
