Hi Gerry, re. the decision on RBI’s vs ol in the draft. I feel that a stud offensive lineman makes the passing and running game better. A stud running back makes the running game better but doesn’t help as much in the passing game. Also, lineman play all 4 downs and are more durable than backs.
Gerry Dulac
1:18
Disagree. You need quality skill players and they gain more importance. And the threat of a good runner does help the passing game, though usually it's the other way around.

Gerry, who will be the starting Center next season?
Gerry Dulac

TBD

Have the Steelers been able to work out Haskins yet?  Will they know much more about him before the draft?
Gerry Dulac
1:19
No they haven't. And not really. There are taking a flyer on him.

Hi Gerry, thanks for the chat. I asked this to another PG associate so I'll ask you as well. Do you think Claypool's numbers will go down if (when) JuJu leaves (similar to JuJu's when AB left) ?  Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
1:19
No, they will go up because he will become more of a dependable target/weapon

Do you think the Steelers should try and sign TE Kyle Rudolph?
Gerry Dulac
1:20
I've been waiting all day for that question. Wouldn't be a bad move.

Is there a tackle or RB in the draft that you could see the Steelers trading up for a few spots to grab in the first round or is the talent deep enough at those positions that it is likely at least one or more candidates fall to #24?
Gerry Dulac
1:21
I don't think they are in much position to trade up and I think they believe there would be a RB available at 24 that they like. And I don't think they would trade up to draft an OT.

Gerry, All this talk about cap hell has me wondering if "great" is way overpriced. I mean today a great QB costs 45mil, a great edge rusher is 25+, a great DL is 20+, a great MLB 20 mil, a great WR is 20mil.So we live in an NFL world where 5 players eat up 60% of your payroll leaving 40% for the remaining 48 players.I am starting to think maybe a team full of B and B+ players will perform better than a team with 5 great players and a boat load of B,C and D players. What do you think?
Gerry Dulac
1:22
Not if one of them isn't a marquee QB. If you don't have that, it doesn't really matter what else you have.

Why are other teams able to identify productive running backs later in the draft yet the Steelers seem unable to do so?
Gerry Dulac
1:25
Not sure, luck maybe. I will point up that James Conner was a third-round pick, Willie Parker was an undrafted free agent. But I won't disagree w you.

Have you seen enough of Mason Rudolph, whether in practice or games and/or gotten enough feedback from the coaches that watch him every day to have a strong opinion on whether he is a quarterback that could give the Steelers a chance to  compete for playoff berths annually?
Gerry Dulac
1:25
I think he has shown he can be a 10-6 quarterback with the Steelers. And the coaches believe the same thing.

steelers are losing bud and probably 1-2 cb's.  Since OL, WR can be had in rounds 3 or 4, why not go BPA LB, CB, or even DL in rounds 1 and 2?  Lets assume the two RB's are gone.
Gerry Dulac
1:27
I think you will see their draft attention on round 1 and even round 2 on offensive players. Not to say that another stud DL or ILB would hurt

I feel the Steelers do above average pulling talent from the draft.  Without the Combine this year, I'm thinking this plays into the Steelers' strength as highly wanted potentials (in their secret list) might drop into their hands .... fair assessment?
Gerry Dulac
1:27
Not sure if that's an assessment, or wishful thinking, but, hey, maybe.

Hi Gerry!  Hear alot talk about how BEn has to take snaps under center for play action to work and help improve running game.  Is this a general consensus among coaches or are there examples of successful play action utilizing a QB in shot gun almost exclusively?  Thanks for the chat!
Gerry Dulac
1:29
No, I have talked to other coaches around the league who think a QB doesn't have to be under center for a running game or even play-action to work.

If and when Ben restructures, who do the Steelers have a reasonable opportunity to resign. Any guesses on how much they will get under the cap? Also, any other restructured contract possibilities? Haden Nelson or Heyward?
Gerry Dulac
1:31
Heyward has been restructured, Tuitt likely will be, so will Nelson. Haden would need a new contract because he's in his final year (that or be released) and Vince Williams will have to take a pay cut in his final year

good afternoon Gerry what do you think about the Steelers drafting Robert hainsey the guard from Notre Dame
Gerry Dulac
1:31
I don't think they need a guard more than a tackle, but I haven't watched him enough to evaluate.

Gerry, I know you've mentioned before that the Steelers might go to Free Agency for a center. Are you still towards FA? And if the Steelers went to draft, do you think Landon Dickerson should come with a buyer beware?
Gerry Dulac
1:32
Once I was told Pouncey would be retiring, Dickerson was the first player in the draft who came to mind. But I think it makes more sense to sign one in free agency, if there is one they like.

Any final word from the NFL yet on the hard salary cap number? Could that delay be the reason that BB and other stars have not signed or  restructured?
Gerry Dulac
1:33
No, not yet. And teams are waiting to see what that number is before committing to some deals.

Rooney will never fire Tomlin. But is he at least AWARE that Tomlin’s teams always come out looking flat, overconfident yet underprepared, never ready for situational football (see Jesse James “non-catch”), especially in the playoffs? And that this was the 4th consecutive late season collapse? Or is he in denial? I think fans would LOVE for him to stop talking to us like we’re stupid.
Gerry Dulac
1:35
I think all those things you mentioned early -- flat, unprepared, overconfident, bad situational football -- are more your observations than facts. But I will give you the late-season collapses/embarrassments, which are documented facts.

Any guess as to how the team might restructure Ben's contract?
Gerry Dulac
1:36
Yeah, three years, take the $19 million he is owed this year, convert to a signing bonus with a possible reduction and push the rest of the money into 2022 and 2023.

If the Steelers fail miserably at running the ball again, who will be the fall guy? Arians and Fichtner took it the last couple times Art 2 made demands that were not met relative to the running game.
Gerry Dulac
1:38
Good question. I don't think you are going to see the running game magically change overnight from being the worst in the league to one of the best. But I think you will see more of a commitment to getting the right personnel, scheme and technique. It may take two years, but, hey, it can't be any worse than what we watched the past 2 years. Brutal.

Hey Gerry, enjoy the chats... what are the possibilities of re-signing Matt Feiler?
Gerry Dulac

They should!
