Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 03.22.23

Does it seem like the Steelers are filling the cheaper positions (ilb, iol) with good starters through free agency and leaving the premier $ positions (LT, DL, CB) to fill via the draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:19
Hate to tell you, that is always their plan of attack every year, almost without fail
Mike from DC
10:19
Will the Steelers add a T prior to the draft? Even a backup swing guy
Gerry Dulac
10:19
I'm sure you will see one in the draft.
Mike from DC

Odds on Bud Dupree or Josh Dobbs returning?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
BREAKING NEWS: Josh Dobbs signed yesterday with the Browns. And I think Bud might be a little pricey and not want to be a backup. But it would be a great move
Alan from Indy
10:20
Gerry, what’s your thoughts on the USGA/ R andA plan to cut pro’s distance with a redesigned golf ball.
Gerry Dulac
10:21
I get the thought process and reasoning behind it, but I'm not sure I'm in favor of it
Mike from DC
10:21
Does any of this free agency / draft buzz matter at the end of the day if Canada doesn’t magically improve in his 3rd season?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
Can someone pay this guy??
Húmpty
10:21
Hey Gerry, Seems like the Steelers still have a big hole at SS. I like Kazee, but see him more of a dime/slot guy. Any plans to get a true box safety?
Gerry Dulac
10:22
I think that's one of the things they are looking at, though I don't have a problem re-signing Edmunds. In fact, I think they should. He's more than serviceable and very dependable.

Although they’ve signed 2 linebackers in free agency, it still doesn’t seem like they have a good coverage linebacker. Do you expect them to draft someone like Simpson or Campbell possibly in the second round? Thank you
Gerry Dulac
10:23
Those wouldn't be bad picks at all. To me, my first three picks would be defensive players -- CB, DE, ILB
Marc from Germany

Hi G! With two rather active offseasons in da 'burgh do you smell a change of seasons or is this more circumstancial?
Gerry Dulac
10:24
I think it points up the need to get better and the Steelers know it. At least they're not standing pat. You can't after going 18-15-1 the last two years.
Bill
10:25
Wasn't $ 7 million per year too high to pay for CB Peterson? Couldn't the Steelers have waited until much later and gotten an aging veteran CB for much less?
Gerry Dulac
10:27
The contract he signed was very cap friendly for the Steelers. It was structured to be backloaded for the second year...and there might not be a second year. It actually was a very good deal for the Steelers

Are you surprised they haven’t hired Leftwich as an assistant. Seem like a very Tomlin like move or is Canada’s ego too fragile to handle it.
Gerry Dulac
10:29
No, I'm not surprised. If they make such a move, they need to bring in a former head coach who is offensive oriented, like a Frank Reich or Jim Caldwell or, hey, Jon Gruden, even though I know none of that is happening or can happen

Any insight as to why Tomlin has such an affinity to Canada?
Gerry Dulac
10:29
Hmmmmm, let's see now....
Danny
10:30
Do you believe Calvin Austin is the answer as the #3 receiver or do Steelers address that early in draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:33
They won't address WR early in the draft. Maybe after the 3rd round at the earliest. But they are hoping -- and excited -- Austin can be that.

Is a extension coming for mike tomlin
Gerry Dulac
10:33
At some point, yes. Always it appears

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . Any insight on whether there is still a chance  that Edmunds would come back? Personally, I would think that with all new Inside Linebackers group , it would make even more sense to bring Edmunds back at safety position since he knows the system and would help keep defense on the same page  . Thank you very much .
Gerry Dulac
10:34
To me, it makes a lot of sense to bring him back.

88s injury history has to be a mild concern… is the TE from Notre Dame in play at 32 or 49?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
No

10:34
The game is played in space.. what’s the plan for an ILB that can cover?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
We'll see. Stay tuned. Don't expect anything dramatic, though

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . Do you think that there is a chance of them bringing  any more of their own free agents back or are they pity much done with signing their own free agents . Thank you very much .
Gerry Dulac
10:35
That's exactly what you will see -- re-signing their own free agents

Are you with the knuckleheads that actually think what we have gained so far is at best equal to what we gave up???  I submit there should be high praise for the new FO and talent seekers.  Arrow up in my book!!!  What say you Gerry??
Gerry Dulac
10:36
Arrow up!

Good morning Gerry, Even though the league is all about high flying offenses, I like the approach of the moves so far. Controlling the lines on both sides of the ball still is a winning formula I believe. Thank you for taking my comment
Gerry Dulac
10:36
I'm with ya Dave. Your running game is only as good as your OLine. And you're ILB are only as good as your DL.

Gerry, thanks for the chats.  Where do you see an area of concern for the Steelers that we the general public may not have picked up on?
