The Steelers put themselves in a good position to draft the best available.  They should get a QB if a top one falls to them at 20.  If they wait til next year they’ll have to give up draft picks, maybe many.  Thoughts?

What do you consider a top one? A top-flite franchise QB or the top one in this draft? There is a drastic difference

Personally would like to have Schobert back at a reduced rate and the 3rd ILB (with Bush uncertainty) When the DL play gets better, so will the ILB play… What say you? Thanks

11:13
I say that ain't happening

Reports have Mayfield going to the Steelers.  Could the Steelers sign him and trade away Trubisky now?

One of my favorite lines from "Christmas Vacation" is when Cousin Eddy (Randy Quaid) says to Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) -- "You serious Clark?"

T.J.Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cameron Heyward have all played great but do you think the Steelers methodical approach have wasted the trio best and productive years ?
Gerry Dulac
11:16
Shouldn't that question pertain to Ben Roethlisberger and not those 3??
Hi Gerry
11:16
If we can bring back Edmonds, and find a vet WR at a reasonable price, is the draft then truly best player available?
Gerry Dulac
11:17
No. They are not going to draft a safety at No. 1, if that's what you are suggesting or thinking
Dan
11:17
If you were to weigh the various factors the Steelers utilize to grade draft prospects... film, combine, pro day, interview etc., are they given equal importance? Leaving need out of this equation, which carries greatest weight in their final decision and does film carry more than combine? Thank you!
Gerry Dulac
11:18
Film/On the field performance carries the most weight by far. The other info is supplemental, though a large portion of that follow-up depends on what they think of the player's character/commitment/passion related to the game

As a Steelers fan I am SICK OF hearing how great Tomlin is.  The national narrative is Pittsburgh is the gold standard of organizations.  And Jax and Cleveland are a mess. Yet since 2011 the Steelers have 3 playoff wins, 1 AFC champ appearance with a HOF QB in his prime and elite talent,  while Jax has 2 playoff wins and owns the head to head over the Steelers with Blake Bortles. The Browns have 2 less playoff wins and own the head to head over Pit and did so without a head coach. Its a shame that all Tomlin has to do is spew meaningless clever sounding cliches to fool the media and fans. Its all drivel. 31 other teams would have fired him by now with 3 playoff wins in 11 years.  Tomlin rode Arians and Lebeau's coattails to a SB in year 2. You think by now he would be a better coach? You have insider knowledge, did Tomlin have any say with the offense or defense back then or he just didnt get in the way?
Gerry Dulac

Tomlin always has input as the head coach so to think he didn't have any would be naive. But, I think with those quality coordinators, he tried not to get in the way, nor should he.

Hello.  Thank you as always for the chat.  I have 2 questions.  Do the Steelers really did not want Ju JU back ?  He got a modest contract . His Mom posted on IG that he signed with Chief because Steelers did not want him .  It does not seem like a smart move.  Second question is that do you expect Steelers to sign Edmunds or Mathieu ? It seems very quiet after flurry of moves in the first week .  Thank you very much.
Gerry Dulac
11:23
The Steelers would have taken JuJu back, but at their price, not his. So to say the Steelers didn't want him could mean they didn't want him at the price KC paid. Also, JuJu has said before he wanted to go somewhere with a top QB (the better to pad his stats), so what better place that with Mahomes and not Rudolph/Trubisky/Haskins. And, no, they're not going to sign Mathieu because they are already slotted to pay Minkah big money this year and they can't afford to pay two players at the same position like that.

Hello.  Thank you for the chat. Do you really expect Steelers to move up in the draft and take Willis after big contingent showing up  at the Liberty Pro Day ?  Does not seem like a smart move to mortgage the future on someone who would have gone in a second round any other year . Thank you
Gerry Dulac
11:23
I don't expect them to move up at all. If they do, dumbest move they can make.

Adam Bittner's article today leaves a lot of doubt as to how good the Steeler's singings really are.  They appear, from his analysis, to be a bunch of below average players (particularly Mason Cole, who appears to be a well below average player).  Do you agree with his analysis?
Gerry Dulac
11:24
I haven't read it and, based on your question, I do not.

In what business, any business in the world, when after being ranked in the lower half in one of the major aspects of your business, and a coach/boss/manager gets a directive from the owner that this aspect of the business must improve, and then every year after that aspect gets progressively worse, and that coach/boss not only does not get fired, but gets a 3 year extension during the downward spiral to the bottom in that aspect of the industry they were directed to improve? In the Steelers case, Tomlin was given to improve the 20th ranked run game after the 2017 season.   Then followed up with 2018 ranked #31, 2019 ranked #29,  2020 ranked #32,  2021 ranked #29 according to pro football reference.com (not PFF). And give a 3 year extension during this slide to the bottom while winning no playoff games.

I kinda figured out your comparison (a good one) from the start. However, you left out one important aspect that was used to give him that extension -- he won the division title after a record 11-0 start in a year when few expected them to even get to the postseason. Not saying that was the right criteria, but that's the one they gave.

Regarding free agent signings...I often read coverage of free agent pick ups by the Steelers highlighted by how well they've played against us. It's almost to the point that it is the overriding determinant. Can't be. Can it?
Gerry Dulac
11:31
It shouldn't be, but often times it us because they've seen the guy close-up and remember that.

Gerry any word on Honey Badger or Bobby Wagner? Both big upgrades over current starters.
Gerry Dulac
11:32
Well, Bobby Wagner is out because they signed Myles Jack. And Mathieu, I'm told, is not an option because of they money they are going to give to Minkah.

With the attempts in Congress to pass legislation aimed at removing the options for municipalities subsidizing the cost of facilities do you anticipate there would be issues with the Rooney's continued ownership when a new stadium is needed or would they be able to fund that?
Gerry Dulac
11:33
Not sure
Bob-O-Pedic
11:33
Chances we sign either sign Gilmore or the Badger?
Gerry Dulac
11:33
Badger, as you call him, ain't happening, I'm told.

Gerry, if Steelers, Chargers, Broncos and Raiders did best in free agency, who did the worst?

I don't rate other teams

I assume Tuitt is palying this season.  What is his cap number if he decides to retire?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
I wouldn't assume that. I think they want to be sure he's all in and committed before that determination is made. If he retires -- your words, not mine -- he would still count nearly $4.3 million against the cap

11:36
How in the world can the STEELERS justify paying Tuitt 15 mil with the lack of availability over the course of his career?!?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
That's exactly right. Especially after getting a "free year" in 2021
