OK kids, had to move the chat time up an hour because of the NFL meetings...oh wait, they ended yesterday, a day early. In any event, we will start our chat in about 5-10 minutes
9:52
Ok kids, let's get started....

Since there really isn't a market for Edmunds do the Steelers sign him for cheap?
Gerry Dulac
9:53
That's a possibility, but that's what it will depend on -- no market for him

Good morning Gerry.  It is looking like the Steelers will be seriously considering taking a QB in the 1st round. What are your thoughts on this?  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac

One thing I learned about the draft and especially with the Steelers, they NEVER give any indication or tip their hand what they are thinking. So when they continually and publicly keep noting they wouldn't hesitate to draft a quarterback even though they signed Mitch Trubisky, it smacks of a smoke screen and tells me they won't draft a quarterback,.

How can sports journalists who continually write what appear to be made up stories based on anonymous sources (I’m looking at you Mary Kay) claim to have any credence?
Gerry Dulac
9:57
That's the question for the ages. But it also applies to those who read that and tend to believe it without considering all the evidence

Any word on safety Landon Collins in free agency? I bet he is worth a look/physical.
Gerry Dulac
9:57
None that I'm aware of.

I’m sure you’ll just be snarky or as usual but…last week you told me Coach Lebeau never used a play card to show that Coach Tomlin didn’t need one to call plays - proof you were wrong: https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2020/07/22/pittsburgh-steelers-dick-... You also conveniently didn’t explain how Coach Tomlin could call plays without ever speaking into his headset? Would genuinely like to hear your thoughts on the legitimacy of Coach T as the play caller based on this and if you’re willing to admit you could be mistaken here?
Gerry Dulac

I don't know enough about Mike Tomlin's play-calling to judge. I leave that to you and the other experts.

Hi Gerry! In the chat two weeks ago, you challenged a questioner to ask you what the players thought of Matt Canada's offense. I would like to ask that question! Also, Mitch Trubisky cited what Canada is trying to install in Pittsburgh as a reason for coming here and not NY. Is that just polite talk or was Canada's offense really a selling point?
Gerry Dulac
10:00
What else was he going to say? I'm not saying it wasn't a reason, maybe it was, but he wasn't going to say "I came here despite Matt Canada's offense." I don't think anyone can look at last year's offense and say, 'Oh yeah, I want to be part of that.'

With Mathieu likely out of the picture, any intel on who Steelers will sign as strong safety FA? Is Terrell Edmunds the guy, or someone else?
Gerry Dulac
10:02
I think they are going to wait on this for a while to see what shakes out. Rest assured, they will get someone who they think can be a starter at SS, and I'm not sure they will rely on the draft for that.

One of the top tier quarterbacks, Olave, and your top rated defensive lineman are all available when your turn comes up at 20. Which one does GM Dulac pick?
Gerry Dulac
10:02
DL. Plenty of receivers to get on the second round

10:02
For weeks, you have alluded that the Steelers will likely go defense, probably DL in the 1st round of the draft.  When others mention that the national media keeps mocking QB Round 1 for Pittsburgh, you say they don't know what they are talking about.  Tomlin and Colbert's recent comments make it seem like a QB is possible.  Can you provide more insight?
Gerry Dulac
10:03
Of course it's possible, anything is possible in the draft. But, like I said earlier, the Steelers NEVER tip their hand what they're thinking in the draft and the constant reference to a quarterback just sets off a warning light to me, that's all.

Kevin Colbert suggested an interest in transitioning to a new role with the Steelers.  What might that be?  Scout?  Something more than that?  How likely is that?
Gerry Dulac
10:04
No, it's just a reduced role, likely for one year, while a new GM gets settled in.
Krugerrand
10:04
Gerry, would the Steelers consider hiring the new GM ahead of the draft to transition to the position .... start now, but your role is effective 5/1?  Or, is it a certainty that the announcement will only happen after the draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:04
No. They won't even conduct second interviews until after the draft.

I remember an opening night football game between the Packers and Bears, which was a primetime game with a lot of hype, and Trubisky laid an absolute egg. One of the Packers defensive players said something to the effect of "We made Mitch Trubisky play quarterback." I think it was translated at the time to mean they kept him in the pocket and made him go through his reads. Was that to a large extent Trubisky playing in an offense that poorly utilized his skill set under Nagy? Do you think Canada can scheme things up to where Mitch doesn't have to "play quarterback" so to speak?
Gerry Dulac
10:05
I didn't see enough of Trubisky in that offense to know what the issue was. But he did have a 29-21 record and made the postseason twice, so he couldn't have been that much of an egg

What’s the holdup on extending Minkah?
Gerry Dulac
10:06
No holdup. Those big contracts are never done this time of year. It will be done closer to the start of the season.

If Jordan Davis isn’t available at 20..who are the next best DL’s to consider?
Gerry Dulac
10:06
That other Georgia DT not too shabby either
Krugerrand
10:06
Another GM question ... could you ever see Mike Tomlin interested in a General Manger role?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
10:07
He said 'no' to that question the other day

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . I have 2 questions for you . Do you agree  that Steelers skipping the Ohio State and Penn State Pro days to go to Matt corral and Ridder pro days says that they are dead serious about taking a QB in first round ? They will probably have to move from 20 to at least 10 , which will be a mistake considering the draft class . Secondly at this point , does it make sense to leave a gaping hole at safety position and not sign Edmunds by just giving away an extra million a year or so to him
Gerry Dulac
10:09
Tomlin and Colbert have certainly been doing their due dilligence when it comes to seeing all the top QB, all of which suggests they could take a QB with the No. 1 pick -- and because several of them should still be available when they pick. And, I don't know what Edmunds wants, but I would re-sign him so long as his demands are ridiculous, which, based on his play, have no right to be.

10:09
Gerry, in the unlikely event that Kenny Pickett and Malik Willis are still on the board at pick 20, which one of them do you think the Steelers would select? Or do you think they would ignore the position altogether?
Gerry Dulac
10:11
After all the work they've put in meeting with the top QBs, you can't deny the possibility they would take one. My guess, because of the mobility factor, it would be Willis. But, to me, they should ignore taking a QB because none of them is a top-tier prospect, merely the best of an average class

10:11
Put on your GM Gerry hat and give us 3 players that are reasonable additions for our Steelers next month in the draft, now that the optics are more clear after free agency
Gerry Dulac
10:11
DL, WR, OT
Jerry
10:12
Hey Gerry! What do you think about us drafting George Pickens?
Gerry Dulac
10:14
I think there are enough good receivers that to zero in on one would be difficult. I don't like him as much as some of the other guys. I will tell you this -- if there is a WR whom they really like still available at 20 do not be surprised if they take him
