OK kids, it's Masters week, so that means our chat will tee off in about 30 minutes. Fore please....

Ok kids, let's get our chat started....Go!!

Gerry - how does contract incentives impact the teams cap? If the player hits the incentive mark, does that decrease the cap space at that time?
Gerry Dulac
10:47
No, the current cap is based on a player's salary and pro-rated portion of his signing bonus for that season. Incentives are not factored into the cap for the current year because that is money that has not been reached -- or may never be reached -- in that year
The Ville
10:47
Gerry - if Mathieu and Edmunds do not sign, what is the teams next option? That would be the highest draft priority imo (other than a potential franchise QB).
Gerry Dulac
10:49
First off, there are no franchise QBs in this draft, just the best of an average lot. But it might force the Steelers to draft a strong safety higher than they would have.

Gerry - with Tomlin and Colbert at the LSU pro day today, do you think they will meet with Mathieu as well? He was visiting the saints yesterday so I am assuming he will be there as well.
Gerry Dulac
10:49
No

Good Day and than you for your time Sir!
Am I wrong in thinking that the Steelers might try to go back to the style that won Ben's first SB with a dominant D, aggressive run game, and a more game manager type of QB, with a bit of flair, who does not hurt them with turnovers? I believe MT can accomplish that much better than MR...
Gerry Dulac
10:50
I don't think there is any question their game plan and style of play will change this year without BR

Hi Gerry, I think Keanu Neal would be a great fit with the Steelers and younger than Honey Badger. Any planned visits or other developments on that front? Thank you!
Gerry Dulac
10:50
I agree.

The Steelers always have a plan and it looks like they are planning to go into the draft without resolving the situation with Edmonds and that safety position. But, if they don’t draft one, it would seem they would be in a bad negotiating position with Edmonds.
Gerry Dulac
10:51
Believe me, they are not going to chase Edmunds with money. If they re-sign him, it's because he's still sitting out there with no better offers and because he's willing to take their offer

Hi Gerry, wouldn't the drafting of a college quarterback by the Steelers be a vote of no confidence in the current QB group including Trubisky who they just signed?  Would Trubisky really be given a fair chance to be the long term solution if the Steelers invest their 1st round choice and money in a quarterback?
Gerry Dulac
10:51
That's why I don't see that happening at all!!
Kris
10:52
I believe that MR is not a starting caliber NFL QB. MT may be in the right system so it would be wise to give him a run without a high pick wasted on an inferior QB class.
Is there any belief in the Steelers organization that DH can develop into a quality QB?
Why not spend a season seeing what these men can do before throwing another dart?
Gerry Dulac
10:52
I think that is the plan.

Hi Gerry.  What are your thoughts on how the WR market is trending in terms of trades and contracts?  Do you see this causing teams to trade veteran WR's and going with younger WR's from the draft vs. overpaying?  Do you think the Steelers should consider trading Johnson and what could they get for him?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
I think that's part of it. Still, when you see teams trading arguably the best 3 WRs in the game the past couple years -- DeAndre Hopkins, Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill -- it is a bit shocking. But I would not put Diontae Johnson in a class where he would command a decent return.

Do you still not buy the Steelers rumoured interest in an early round quarterback this draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
That's why they are rumors

I’ve heard different reports regarding Haden still being in play for the Steelers while other reports advise that there is no room for him after their free agent CB signings. What’s the truth?
Gerry Dulac
10:55
Their free-agent CB signings did not break the bank. Just protected them

10:55
Has Haskins shown anything this offseason to make us think he can be a starter?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
No because they haven't done ANYTHING yet this offseason to gauge.

Greetings Gerry! I can't recall a draft where the Steelers had so many positions to fill that could be used on the 1st pick. Now that the dust has settled a bit, what does your magic ball tell us what will happen?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
Actually, it's not complicated at all. Their first pick will be a D-lineman or a WR. Using a No. 1 pick on one of these QBs is a waste. And I don't see them investing a No. 1 pick in safety when they have MF.
Utah Jim
10:57
Does it make sense to use one more draft to build a dominate defense and depth on offensive instead of a QB? Give Mitch a year and if he stinks you likely have a higher pick next season and more draft capital if needed. If he’s good, you have your QB.
Gerry Dulac
10:58
Absolutely correct. But they have already paid attention to the OL in free agency. And their intent is to pay attention to the D-line in the draft
Utah Jim
10:58
Is Marcus Allen a possibility at Strong Safety?
Gerry Dulac
10:58
As a backup, yes. As a starter, no.

The Steelers always have a plan and you generally seem to have good insight to what they are thinking. It looks like they are planning to go into the draft without resolving the situation with Edmonds and that safety position. But, if they don’t draft one, it would seem to put them in a poor negotiating position with Edmonds.  I don’t think Joseph is the answer. So, which of these options for SS going forward do you see as most likely: 1. Edmonds, 2. Draft pick (presumably a high one), 3. Joseph, 4. Someone else.
Gerry Dulac
11:01
I think 4 is the most likely. They will draft a strong safety at some point, but it might not be and probably won't be with the top pick
Krugerrand
11:01
I apologize if it has already been asked ... what is your preference for overtime in regular season/playoffs?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
I think each team should get at least one possession so I like the change for the postseason

Hi Gerry, thanks for the chat. My question is who will be RB2 to spell Najee? I would think the Steelers wouldn't use a draft pick to fill that role especially with other needs. Having said that, in your opinion, do they go the FA route or stick with who they already have and hope for better results? Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:04
It's possible they could add a veteran backup RB after the draft, closer to training camp. In fact, that's probably a good idea. But, for now, I think they will stick with what they have
Krugerrand
11:04
Do you see any chance for Josh Dobbs to make the team?  If not, do you see him catching on somewhere else?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
Not really. Not unless they decide to release Haskins or trade Rudolph if they are firmly convinced Trubisky is their guy. Dobbs is already working out for other teams, which tells you what he thinks his chances are.
