Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 04.10.24
powered byJotCast
Gerry Dulac
10:47
On the front nine or back nine?
KC
10:47
Gerry, does selecting TJ and Cam at the very bottom of the first round more than amend for Penny Kickett and other missteps along the way?
Gerry Dulac
10:48
Hey, that's always going to happen with the draft. Some hits, some misses. You just want to make sure you have more first-round hits than misses.
sEAN
10:48
What do you think they will do for the WR room? I personally think they can get a #2 in the 3rd round. Make Pickens the true #1
Gerry Dulac
10:49
Pickens will be No. 1. And they will get a WR before the second day of the draft is over
Tom M.
10:49
The Bills traded Diggs to Houston. Do you have any idea if the Steelers were in on trying to get him? After seeing the return, do you think they should have been?
Gerry Dulac
10:49
I don't know that for certain, but I would imagine, given their desire to find a proven WR, they made a few phone calls.
Stash
10:49
Gerry, do you think Coach T actually tries to improve his shortcomings, like clock management and replay selection?  All available evidence would seem to indicate no, no?
Gerry Dulac
10:50
I can tell you this: He tries to improve every facet of what he does every year. Now, whether that happens or not is another story.
Paul from Beaver Falls
10:50
Since Cam Sutton is innocent until proven guilty can the Steelers sign him to a cheap one year contract.
Gerry Dulac
10:50
Why would they?
Bill
10:51
gerry, you never seemed to think Pickett was a "franchise quarterback" we were seeking, was it talent , character or both that gave you that impression,
Gerry Dulac
10:51
Had nothing to do with character. That revealed itself later.
TVC15
10:51
Hi Gerry, If you had to bet a million dollars which is more likely to happen over the next 5 seasons?
1) The Steelers win 2 playoff games one season.
-- or --
2) The Steelers finish below .500 one season.
Gerry Dulac
10:51
Great question. I'll choose what's behind door No.  1
Jim_Bow_Dean
10:51
Is it possible for them to get a top Tackle and Center in this draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:52
Sure. But only if they make a trade to move up
Shreveport
10:52
Gerry, Thank you for the chats. Do you believe the Steelers will soon retire Bradshaw's 12? If they are going to do it, I pray they do it while he is still alive.
Gerry Dulac
10:52
They will do it. And, if they don't, shame on them

10:52
Favorite hole at Augusta?  Ever lucky enough to play there?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
I have played there -- the day after Vijay won in 2000. Favorite hole? Gotta be 13, with 10, 11, 12 and 15 right behind

Good morning Gerry - I’m puzzled by the segment of our fan base that continues to slam Tomlin and call for his firing. Since he began with the Steelers, he’s been a model of consistency and represents the team admirably both on and off the field (the team consistently wins a lot of games, he’s solid in the community, etc.). Yes, we’re in a playoff drought - but this has much to do with Ben’s last few years when he was a shell of himself and the challenges we face stabilizing the QB position. Don’t you think he did great patching together the D last year after it was decimated with injuries?
Gerry Dulac
10:55
It's the same group of people who booed David Bednar yesterday. These fans, I love 'em
Jake in Colorado
10:55
Gerry - thanks for all you do. What are your thoughts on what the Steelers will do at center?  Clearly they have to address it somehow but it seems like they may want someone else at 20 and that the top centers will be gone by their 2d round pick. Is the georgia center good enough to plug and play?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
Jake, they HAVE to. Which is why I said if they don't think any center had a No. 20 grade on them, they will have to trade up in the second round to get one of the three they like.
TVC15
10:56
'Sup Gerry, If you had known the nanosecond Big Ben threw the pick-6 in the Super Bowl against the Packers that they would win only 3 playoff games over the next 13 seasons would you have considered moving on from Tomlin?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
My man, I don't think anyone could foresee that happening.
Paul from Beaver Falls
10:57
How many games does Russ get before they think about going to Fields?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
Well, it depends if they win those games or not. If they start 1-3 and the offense struggles, maybe then. But I don't think there's going to be a short leash on Wilson
Eric Carr
10:58
Gerry do you think there is anything to the artist formerly known as AB's prediction that Justin Simmons will sign with us soon? He and Chad Johnson were right about Russell Wilson. Don't really need him and a signing would probably indicate unhappiness with and the end of Kazee. But what a trio that would be with Fitz, Simmons, and Elliott! And this late in the game the price would prob be right
Gerry Dulac
10:59
Let me say this, I thought all along Simmons would be a great fit and an ideal signing for them. I just don't see that happening after paying Queen and bringing in Elliott. And Kazee is a free safety, not a strong safety
TVC15
10:59
Is Omar Khan doing his due diligence and eyeing up a successor for Tomlin? Or is it cool if the no playoff win streak stretches to 10 years or beyond?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
That's not his job
Steeler Joe
10:59
Hey, Gerry. Can you say, with any degree of certainty, which center prospect is at the top of the Steelers' list? Barton? JPJ? Frazier?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
SJ, I can't say for certainty today. But I will soon, OK
Steeler Joe
10:59
Is there a potentially bigger role for Connor Heyward in Arthur Smith's offense?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Probably not. And not sure there should be.
Ray/OC
11:00
Morning Gerry, Big Fan: On OTC  right now the Steelers will have over $ 24M in Dead Money going forward.  With the trades of DJ and Kenny counting over $ 9M, can you please explain Dead Money after a trade, and after cutting a player?  Thank you
Gerry Dulac
11:03
Dead money usually accounts for the signing bonus money that is pro-rated over the life of the contract. Any salary or roster bonus that is due does not count.

Hi Gerry, do the Steelers have any women working in the scouting or player development departments?

Have we really improved at QB?  I would take Mason over Wilson - less turnovers, better pocket presence, smarter quarterback.  While neither Fields or Pickett have dazzled, the results of games show that Kenny is clearly better.  So how have we improved?

I wonder if Justin Fields and his advisors realized what Kenny Pickett and his did not: Geno Smith did pretty well for watching Russ cook for a couple seasons.  Will KP ever see a snap again? Happy Masters Week from Georgia!

Gerry, is there anything worse than all the golf holes in western PA that send you down a large hill off the tee, then send you back up a large hill to the flag?  I realize we have hilly terrain, but come in, such holes are the worst....

So far the only thing that Fields has shown he can do in the NFL is run fast.  That was the same with Devin Bush, Artie Burns, and Jarvis Jones.  Does Tomlin have a blind spot for players that run fast?  Does he need to realize speed is one thing, but understanding how to play in the NFL is more important?

Gerry, do the Oakmont members truly enjoy having their course ready to host the US Open on any given day?  I've got to believe that there are plenty of hack members who have to pick up after registering a snowman and not yet reaching the green....

Does Tomlin need a better defensive coaching staff?  The current group seems to get blown out in playoff games. In addition the player development and drafting has been suspect.  From 2013 to 2019, every 1st round pick was on defense (7 players) and only Watt  has gotten a 2nd contract.  Few mid round picks seem to develop.  6 of 11 defensive starters are either free agents or from trades despite all that investment of draft capital (which has also diluted the offense by not working out and then needing more draft and salary cap investment).

Gerry when Tomlin talks about being "excited about being uncomfortable" (a reference to changes at OC and on the roster) is he acknowledging (consciously or not) that he's been in something of a 'comfort zone' (with personnel he's familiar with) these past few years. I refer especially to Matt Canada, who you pretty well put up a bat signal to get rid of 12 months ago. Was he too 'comfortable' to see the obvious?

Hi Gerry, I believe the Steelers are better off having moved on from Pickett. With that said, I think he will get some starts with the Eagles because of backing up a running quarterback. What say you?

If this is Cam's last year, what type of year do you think he needs to have to make the Hall of Fame - or do you think he already has the resume to make it? I'd love to see him enshrined

Trying to figure how they can not reach for a center in round 1, but still get one in round 2. A trade up is speculated in 2, but could they trade back in 1 to get a 2 or does the chart usually say they'd get a 3 in return for that? Lots of numbers, Gerry, so 10-4, I'm out.

Hi, Gerry. Do you think the team has someone in mind BESIDES Cole or Herbig to backfill the center position before the draft just in case? Perhaps a potential trade or an under-the-radar free agent if there is such a thing?

Why does Mr. LA think that Pickett was/is any good. He threw 6 freakin TDs!. Ben that in one game, twice!?? Pickett is a career backup and journey man. I wish him the best of luck, but it was never going to happen for him. Never saw him "flash". Question for you Jerry. Who's the ideal starter for us by season end? Russell (now) or Justin (future)?
