Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 04.10.24

Not that I'm aware of
Steeler Joe
11:04
If Darnell Washington's knees are limiting his effectiveness as a receiving TE, why is he such a great blocker? You need knees for that, too ...
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Correct
Stash
11:04
Gerry, how foolish will the brass look if they don't restructure Cam, and he blows out his shaky groin in Week 2?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
Well, either foolish (to use your word) or extremely generous and thankful for his service

Hello Gerry.  Thank you as always for the chat.  As I read the predictions, I am amazed that why QB is not listed as a Steelers priority in the First or Second Round, not to start, but to sit and be developed, ala Aaron Rodgers? Otherwise, we will be in the same predicament next year or the following years as we were in Pickett year draft and will throw another QB to sink or swim before he would be ready?  Wilson is not going to be here more than a year or two and you said it yourself about Fields, and I totally agree, that a Franchise QB is not 10-28 in 3 years, no matter the surrounding cast. Its funny we were not ready to give Pickett a 3rd year but we are so high on Fields after 3 failed years. But I digress. The next year is not a good QB class or so I am told, so if someone falls to you at #20 why not take it ? I know that there are too many other needs but if you do not get a QB, not only next 2 years will be wasted on Wilson/Fields experiment but many more after that. Thank you very much.
Gerry Dulac
11:06
You don't have to worry or get upset about them not taking a QB in the first round or second round. That's not going to happen. For now, Justin Fields fits the role of what you're describing or hoping for
BPOS
11:06
Were you surprised they didn't bring back Boykin?  He seemed to be be affordable and was a great ST player.
Gerry Dulac
11:07
To a degree, but you can't sign everyone. And maybe he wanted to go somewhere he could play offensively
DennisSC
11:07
Who do you see as an earlier draft pick that might be under the radar to most Steeler fans?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
I don't think any of the first three picks will be under the radar, not with the way the draft is over-analyzed, publicized and ridiculously dissected each year.

Gerry - thanks for the chats! Masters Q: how significant do you think the LIV format (54 hole no-cut chucklefests) will be the longer this split continues? We saw some LIV guys play well in majors last year, but the longer they are away from the grind of 4 day events against stronger overall fields it’s gotta take a toll on the competitive edge, no?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
Well, until we see take effect in the majors, which it hasn't so far, I'm not sure.
the real guest
11:09
Gerry, Do you think the Steelers would have a better D if TJ played as a DE in a 4/3 D?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
No
Paul from Beaver Falls
11:09
Does Dan Moore have any trade value?  Is he really good like Kevin Dotson but the coaching staff messed him up?
Gerry Dulac
11:10
I don't think the coaching staff messed him up at all. That he has started every game since he was drafted speaks volumes about him and the coaches.
Serra
11:10
Thanks for the chats, Gerry. Any truth to Steelers possibly moving practice facility to Cranberry/Butler County?
Gerry Dulac
11:11
They probably should, but I'm not sure Art Rooney II, like his dad before him, has any intention of moving outside the city limits
Steve in Canton
11:11
Hi Gerry, do you think the Steelers should draft a "plug and play" guy at #20, rather than a "potential" guy? For instance, JPJ over Mims.
Gerry Dulac
11:11
Absolutely unequivocally
Steve in Canton
11:11
Looks like George Pickens is lobbying for the #1 jersey. Will he get it?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
As Bruce Arians once said on draft day when he was asked if third-round pick Matt Spaeth was another Matt Kranchick, "God, I hope not."
BPOS
11:14
Might we see Darnell Washington more involved in Arthur Smiths passing game? I know his primary role is blocker but if he's not going to at least be a threat in the offense, why not just carry another lineman?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
I hope so and I think he should
Steeler Joe
11:15
Is Justin Simmons at all a possibility? I keep holding out hope, but it feels like they've already signed their safety and don't have the cash left for a luxury move like that.
Gerry Dulac
11:15
Patrick Queen's deal, coupled with the money being paid TJ, Minkan and Cam, probably makes it difficult.
The Nate Dude
11:15
Morning, Gerry. Do you feel us fans and media are overvaluing the center position in the first round and even 2nd round? I know we need a guy there but the last 10 super winners don’t have a first or second round drafted center, the closest being creed Humphrey in the 3rd round.
Gerry Dulac
11:16
Not at all. You remember Maurkice Pouncey?
Steve in Canton
11:16
What do you think a fair market extension for Justin Fields would be? Something like 3 years for $60M (total)..
Gerry Dulac
11:16
Are you dreaming? Can't imagine anything more than a two-year deal.
Chuck
11:16
Hi Gerry - are you projecting Elandon Roberts and Patrick Queen as our starting ILBs?  And Cole Holcomb in mix depending on recovery?
Gerry Dulac
11:17
Holcomb's recovery, while a big question mark, will be a key. But, yes.
Bones
11:17
Good morning Gerry. The stock for centers in the draft seem to be changing daily. Who would you recommend the Steelers select to fill the hole?
Gerry Dulac
11:17
I like them to take another JPJ
Steve in Canton
11:17
Biggest surprise so far among draft-eligible players visiting the Steelers' facility?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
No surprise. All those players and their positions should tell you what they are thinking for the draft
Mike—EE
11:18
Gerry, are you worried about the center position? It seems no candidate is worth a #1 pick like Pouncey was years ago. Hate to see them draft another Kendrell Greene.
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Yeah, I don't think they have a grade on any center like they did with Pouncey. But shame on them if they wait till the third round to address the only position on the team that doesn't have a starter. Did I mention center is the only position on the team that doesn't have a starter??
574 Fan
11:19
Is there a chance that some within the organization feel that either Herbig or Anderson could be a short term bridge at either RT (Anderson) or C (either) if the draft doesn’t go the team’s way?

Have we really improved at QB?  I would take Mason over Wilson - less turnovers, better pocket presence, smarter quarterback.  While neither Fields or Pickett have dazzled, the results of games show that Kenny is clearly better.  So how have we improved?

I wonder if Justin Fields and his advisors realized what Kenny Pickett and his did not: Geno Smith did pretty well for watching Russ cook for a couple seasons.  Will KP ever see a snap again? Happy Masters Week from Georgia!

Gerry, is there anything worse than all the golf holes in western PA that send you down a large hill off the tee, then send you back up a large hill to the flag?  I realize we have hilly terrain, but come in, such holes are the worst....

So far the only thing that Fields has shown he can do in the NFL is run fast.  That was the same with Devin Bush, Artie Burns, and Jarvis Jones.  Does Tomlin have a blind spot for players that run fast?  Does he need to realize speed is one thing, but understanding how to play in the NFL is more important?

Gerry, do the Oakmont members truly enjoy having their course ready to host the US Open on any given day?  I've got to believe that there are plenty of hack members who have to pick up after registering a snowman and not yet reaching the green....

Does Tomlin need a better defensive coaching staff?  The current group seems to get blown out in playoff games. In addition the player development and drafting has been suspect.  From 2013 to 2019, every 1st round pick was on defense (7 players) and only Watt  has gotten a 2nd contract.  Few mid round picks seem to develop.  6 of 11 defensive starters are either free agents or from trades despite all that investment of draft capital (which has also diluted the offense by not working out and then needing more draft and salary cap investment).

Gerry when Tomlin talks about being "excited about being uncomfortable" (a reference to changes at OC and on the roster) is he acknowledging (consciously or not) that he's been in something of a 'comfort zone' (with personnel he's familiar with) these past few years. I refer especially to Matt Canada, who you pretty well put up a bat signal to get rid of 12 months ago. Was he too 'comfortable' to see the obvious?

Hi Gerry, I believe the Steelers are better off having moved on from Pickett. With that said, I think he will get some starts with the Eagles because of backing up a running quarterback. What say you?

If this is Cam's last year, what type of year do you think he needs to have to make the Hall of Fame - or do you think he already has the resume to make it? I'd love to see him enshrined

Trying to figure how they can not reach for a center in round 1, but still get one in round 2. A trade up is speculated in 2, but could they trade back in 1 to get a 2 or does the chart usually say they'd get a 3 in return for that? Lots of numbers, Gerry, so 10-4, I'm out.

Hi, Gerry. Do you think the team has someone in mind BESIDES Cole or Herbig to backfill the center position before the draft just in case? Perhaps a potential trade or an under-the-radar free agent if there is such a thing?

Hi Gerry, and Good Morning.  I blame the Pirates manager for putting Bednar in this very close game when Bednar didn't have a "normal" Spring training season.

Why does Mr. LA think that Pickett was/is any good. He threw 6 freakin TDs!. Ben that in one game, twice!?? Pickett is a career backup and journey man. I wish him the best of luck, but it was never going to happen for him. Never saw him "flash". Question for you Jerry. Who's the ideal starter for us by season end? Russell (now) or Justin (future)?
