Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 04.10.24

There's a chance, but that's not the advisable way to think. Or the correct one
Steve in Canton
11:20
If Georgia TE Brock Bowers slips to #20, would you run the card up? Maybe draft him as a WR.
Gerry Dulac
11:20
Nope
Stash
11:20
Gerry, considering Coach T's apparent failures at turning AB, Martavis, Cameron, etc. into better humans, should he perhaps focus on more tangible improvements, like clock management and replay selection, and refer said troubled personalities to qualified mental health professionals?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
I'll ask him.
Steve in Canton
11:20
Thanks for moving the chat to 10:30. I got an extra 30 minutes of shuteye. Will this be the new trend?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
Only if I have a conflict at 10
Steve in Canton
11:21
Which college player do you hope slips to #20? - Realistically.
Gerry Dulac
11:21
C'mon, who is being realistic when it comes to the draft??
A. Roy
11:21
Morning Gerry. I'm still not liking the D. Johnson trade. It obviously leaves a big hole to fill, and one injury leaves the offense right back in a big hole. I understand Johnson had several diva moments, but are we being told that Tomlin and staff were unable to sit down with him and get issues worked out like professionals? Was either Tomlin and/or Johnson unable to get this done? Did they even try? I just scratch my head on this.
Gerry Dulac
11:22
I wasn't a big proponent of it, either. And, according to Tomlin, he didn't ask for a trade
7 year drought
11:22
Gerry, Do the Steelers have a player development problem? It seems like very few of their guys show continual improvement. They either arrive ready to contribute from day one or they never arrive. Of course there are guys like Alex Highsmith who got better his first couple years but the examples of that seem to be fewer and further between than they used to.
Gerry Dulac
11:23
I think that is true of most teams in today's NFL. You get three years to prove you can contribute/improve or you're out
Same Old Questions
11:23
“Is the team done signing until after the draft?” “Which positions will they draft 1-3? Is it OT, C, WR? Or CB, OT, WR?…” “if players X and Y are there, who do you like?” “I saw Justin Simmons to Steelers on CTEspn, can you confirm?” “Golf question”
Gerry Dulac
11:23
And you want me to respond to this....how?
Hogan
11:24
Gerry, do you recall the glory days when one could purchase a top-of-the-line putter for about 100 bucks?  One now needs to finance such a purchase over several years, or prematurely withdraw from their 401k.....
Gerry Dulac
11:24
Or sell a Steelers-Ravens 50-yard line ticket

Lots of folks worried about getting WR2 high in the draft.  If you hire an OC from the Shanahan or Reid coaching tree, maybe that’s how the draft is approached. But, if you hire Art Smith, you’re probably gonna make sure your OLine is sorted out to the extent that the draft allows it before you worry about a guy that you might need 60-70 catches from, right?
Gerry Dulac
11:25
You might be right about that. But Arthur Smith isn't making the picks
RicJ
11:25
At what point do the steelers abandon the status quo in terms of middle of the pack and one game above 500 is acceptable? Stability only goes so far, and while Tomlin is always a fun listen on Tuesdays, but at this point it's lip service.
Gerry Dulac
11:25
That's what they're hoping to do this year with all the big moves they made. And 10-7 is three games over .500
CG
11:26
Good morning, Gerry. The Steelers needs are C, WR, OT, Slot CB, and DL.  What's the order in the draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
Somewhere close to what you suggest, though I wouldn't lie awake thinking about a slot corner. The only people worried about a slot corner are Super Bowl finalists
Butch
11:27
The Steeler way with almost all coaches and management has always been humble.  Both privately and publicly.  MT has certainly broken the mold in that sense.  Do you believe that has been part of his issue with his playoff win drought?  Do you think ownership has brought the issue to his attention?
Gerry Dulac
11:29
Are you saying they should be more publicly vocal about any dissastifaction they might have with Mike Tomlin?
MajorRick
11:30
Good morning, Gerry. Admit it; you will miss the weekly Pressley Harvin bashings a tiny bit during your chats.
Gerry Dulac
11:30
You might find this hard to believe but I will miss Pressley Harvin. I like the kid. Good dude
Danny
11:30
Would u say Tomlin is second in command
Gerry Dulac
11:31
You could say that, though not sure I'm ready to say that. He is in command of the team he is given
Guest
11:31
Your colleague on Tuesday suggested that CB2/3 was less of a need than people think.  Then, a few questions later, said he wasn't very high on Dante Jackson.  Any insight or anything to add?
Gerry Dulac
11:32
I'll get a better feel for Jackson once they get to camp. But I think the panthers got the better of that deal.
Gregg from Shaler
11:32
Hi Gerry, I was going to ask why we haven’t been hearing about #80 as a potential pass catching option for OCAS while we rebuild our WR room only to read he may have knee issues and not be the block first with upside option we heard he was. What’s your opinion?
Gerry Dulac
11:33
I'd like to see him get more of a chance catching the ball, but you have heard me say in the past about his knees.
Frank
11:33
Did the Packers resign Love before the 5th yr option deadline? Seen comps to Fields situation
Gerry Dulac
11:33
I can see that happening, but not for that kind of money
Guest
11:34
Tomlin is possibly about to set a team record with 8 straight winless postseasons.  I don't believe any other coach in team history has done that.  Wouldn't this streak be more telling of his career accomplishments (or lack of)  than the meaningless regular season streak?
Gerry Dulac
11:34
It might not be more telling, but it is a blight on his resume
Steve in Canton
11:34
Hi Gerry, did Kenny do the Steelers a favor? See where I'm going. By him complaining about a competition with R. Wilson, did it give the Steelers an excuse to trade him? Since everyone knew he wasn't "the guy."
Gerry Dulac
11:35
You might be on to something there Canton
Chuck Noll
11:35
I always try to follow who the Steelers bring in for a pre-draft visit because that is a goon indication they may pick them. Why haven't any centers been in yet? It is a glaring hole in the roster, right?

Have we really improved at QB?  I would take Mason over Wilson - less turnovers, better pocket presence, smarter quarterback.  While neither Fields or Pickett have dazzled, the results of games show that Kenny is clearly better.  So how have we improved?

I wonder if Justin Fields and his advisors realized what Kenny Pickett and his did not: Geno Smith did pretty well for watching Russ cook for a couple seasons.  Will KP ever see a snap again? Happy Masters Week from Georgia!

Gerry, is there anything worse than all the golf holes in western PA that send you down a large hill off the tee, then send you back up a large hill to the flag?  I realize we have hilly terrain, but come in, such holes are the worst....

So far the only thing that Fields has shown he can do in the NFL is run fast.  That was the same with Devin Bush, Artie Burns, and Jarvis Jones.  Does Tomlin have a blind spot for players that run fast?  Does he need to realize speed is one thing, but understanding how to play in the NFL is more important?

Gerry, do the Oakmont members truly enjoy having their course ready to host the US Open on any given day?  I've got to believe that there are plenty of hack members who have to pick up after registering a snowman and not yet reaching the green....

Does Tomlin need a better defensive coaching staff?  The current group seems to get blown out in playoff games. In addition the player development and drafting has been suspect.  From 2013 to 2019, every 1st round pick was on defense (7 players) and only Watt  has gotten a 2nd contract.  Few mid round picks seem to develop.  6 of 11 defensive starters are either free agents or from trades despite all that investment of draft capital (which has also diluted the offense by not working out and then needing more draft and salary cap investment).

Gerry when Tomlin talks about being "excited about being uncomfortable" (a reference to changes at OC and on the roster) is he acknowledging (consciously or not) that he's been in something of a 'comfort zone' (with personnel he's familiar with) these past few years. I refer especially to Matt Canada, who you pretty well put up a bat signal to get rid of 12 months ago. Was he too 'comfortable' to see the obvious?

Hi Gerry, I believe the Steelers are better off having moved on from Pickett. With that said, I think he will get some starts with the Eagles because of backing up a running quarterback. What say you?

If this is Cam's last year, what type of year do you think he needs to have to make the Hall of Fame - or do you think he already has the resume to make it? I'd love to see him enshrined

Trying to figure how they can not reach for a center in round 1, but still get one in round 2. A trade up is speculated in 2, but could they trade back in 1 to get a 2 or does the chart usually say they'd get a 3 in return for that? Lots of numbers, Gerry, so 10-4, I'm out.

Hi, Gerry. Do you think the team has someone in mind BESIDES Cole or Herbig to backfill the center position before the draft just in case? Perhaps a potential trade or an under-the-radar free agent if there is such a thing?

Why does Mr. LA think that Pickett was/is any good. He threw 6 freakin TDs!. Ben that in one game, twice!?? Pickett is a career backup and journey man. I wish him the best of luck, but it was never going to happen for him. Never saw him "flash". Question for you Jerry. Who's the ideal starter for us by season end? Russell (now) or Justin (future)?
