You never know. But I'm guessing not

I know a lot of people will ask you who you WANT the Steelers to draft. But who are some players you want them to stay away from(character or unfit)?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
I have a hard enough time tracking down and keeping up with who they want, not who they don't want.
JM
10:26
Are the DTs in play at 20 at all, Illinois Johnny Newton or Texas Byron Murphy? Everyone talks about Cam retiring but Ogunjobi doesn't seem reliable or that good.
Gerry Dulac
10:28
Yeah, I think they are in play, though neither is the body type or is the type of player needed to be a DE in a 3-4. They are Javon Hargrave types, not Cam Heyward

Good Morning Gerry, With all this talk of OL and WR in the first 2 rounds, will the glaring need for a stud DE be deferred yet another year?
Gerry Dulac
10:30
Probably, mainly because there aren't many with a No. 1 grade to choose from. But there is a need. And, with regard to an earlier observation about Larry Ogunjobi, which I forgot to address, I agree. He is not reliable.

Gerry, dig the chats. Based on the top 30 draft visits, I say the Steelers will select BPA at OT, C, WR, or CB. What say you?
Gerry Dulac
10:32
Hey Chuck, thanx for the dig. You're really going out on a limb there, eh? And I don't think it's either/or as much as it is what they are likely to address with their first four picks. But don't discount DL in there, either.

Ger - are any D lineman in play for us in round 1, or 2?  If so do you have a name or two to keep an eye on?
Gerry Dulac
10:33
I gave you one -- Darius Robison. Problem is, not a high enough grade for round 1, and might not be available when they pick in round 2. Among the reasons I say the most likely draft-day trade possibility is to move up in the second round.

Gerry Why doesn't anyone seem interested in the DL.  They've been soft last several years.  2021 the Steelers were last in the league in Rush defense.  Leal, Loudermilk, Adams, old Cam, its a major area in distress but nobody seems to notice.  The ILBs get walloped with no protection.  what say you?
Gerry Dulac
10:33
The guy who does this chat as stressed the need for that for two years
Stash
10:33
Gerry, did The Emperor have a warm spot for any of his players?  If he did, my guess would be J Ham.  Or was he a cold-blooded killer who only looked at performance?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
He was accused of holding on to his Super Bowl players into the 80s, when they were past their prime. Maybe he was a softie after all.

Is the idea of Pickens as a WR 1 a result of his growth and development and work ethic or mostly wishful thinking?
Gerry Dulac
10:35
It's mainly a result of not having another receiver who could be a No. 1. But, hey, he has the talent to be a No. 1. And, like it or not (which I don't), he has the diva demeanor to be a No. 1

I would bet a buffalo nickel that the Steelers draft either DT Khristian Boyd or DT Logan Lee on day three of the draft. How do you like my odds?
Gerry Dulac
10:36
I'll let you know next Friday
Dan
10:36
Hey Gerry, thanks for the  chat! I have a non draft question for you. Do you feel like we’re getting enough production from Highsmith? For all the double teams TJ gets seven sacks seems paltry to me. They’re often referred to as an elite duo, Batman and Robin, etc. but it seems like Highsmith disappears during long stretches of games. Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
10:37
I think it's easy to overlook what Highsmith does because of Watt's production. But let me tell you this -- he is much better against the run than Watt.
JR
10:37
Should you limit the number words allowed in each question?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
I do that anyway. If anyone has noticed, on those long-winded questions, my answer(s) usually have to do with the first sentence or two, primarily because I don't have the time or inclination to read their entire dissertation
JM
10:39
How would you weigh the responsibility of the poor end of the Colbert era drafts, % wise between Colbert and Tomlin? As Colbert was leaving, did he defer to Tomlin's personnel choices more than his own preferences?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
No, not at all.
Tampa Too
10:39
Gerry  Since it takes several years to realistically grade a draft class how would you grade the Steelers drafts from 2 and 3 years ago?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
I think they have been pretty good, actually, except your No. 1 pick from 2022 is no longer here.
Russelmania 13
10:40
Hey Gerry, There has been so much talk about if the Steelers should trade down in the 1st or even trade up in the 2nd… If both were in play which side would the Steelers be more inclined to persue?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Up in the second. They are not good enough to trade down in the first
JC
10:40
Who do us readers need to reach out to advocate for a Dulac golf chat? Is this something you would want to do?
Gerry Dulac
10:41
Already banging that drum JC. And, based on the number of golf questions I get in this chat, I'd say let's tee it up
Ken
10:41
I know it is said to not reach for a need. But if a Center is needed and you can get one of the top 3 why not do it.
Gerry Dulac
10:42
They will only do it if they have a No. 20 grade on him
Joe Friday
10:42
Hi Gerry - what if the Steelers did not get another top receiver? Aren't the two WRs they picked up decent - but not stars?
Gerry Dulac
10:42
Correct. Decent. Kind of like Allen Robinson, though neither ever had his prior numbers.
JC
10:42
Gerry, do you feel the Steelers should try trading for a veteran WR with solid pedigree or just let their chips fall with the draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:43
A trade was, and still might be, their intention, though the chances keep getting slimmer

Do you believe character will be scrutinized more heavily this draft?  We have had a long list of players acting up - AB,  Bell, JuJu, Bryant, Claypool, Johnson, Pickens, and so on.  We often hear that Tomlin is the right guy to shape them up.  Well, so far he is batting .000 in that category.  In fact, he may even enable them.  Is the only solution to not bring these guys in the organization at all ?
Gerry Dulac
10:48
Are you calling him an enabler?? Hmmmm....

Gerry, a friend told me you're a scratch golfer, you keep the scores you  like and scratch the ones you don't like. Any truth to that rumor? LOL
