OK, kids, happy draft week. We'll start our chat in approximately 15 min so get your questions ready...
10:52
OK kids, here we go. Fire away...
Hi Gerry
10:52
Do you see the Steelers making any more FA moves before the draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:53
No. Their focus is on the draft. Any more free-agent signings will come after the draft, and those won't be anything significant.

Thoughts on them trading the 32nd pick to get back into the late stages of round 1?  It would probably cost less than moving up from 17 and could grab another player that they have a first round grade on that falls.
Gerry Dulac
10:55
Good point. But that would also require them having to deal their 47th overall pick in some manner, and I don't think they want to do that just to move up in the latter stages of the first round. I think they are very happy having three picks among the first 47

Hi Gerry. If for some reason Jalen Carter were to fall far enough in the draft to let's say 8,9, or 10, do you think the Steelers would trade up to take him? Do you know if they like Carter? Thanks for your time!
Gerry Dulac
10:57
I'm sure they like Carter; which team doesn't? But that's on the field. I don't think they would trade up to get him. That's what they call a high-risk move.

Gerry thanks for all the great chats.  What are the odds that the Steelers move up to select a player and who do you think they are targeting if so.
Gerry Dulac
10:58
I think the odds are decent they move up. But, if they do, I think it would only be for one of the two CBs they covet in the draft.

Last week you claimed to not have said Larry O was better than Hargrove and challenged me to price otherwise. If you would to kindly provide to me access to your previous charts (no longer online) I will be happy to. I have never once called you out for something you didn’t truly say (this, Jack. Schoenberg contract, etc etc). I am not the one spreading falsehoods and if you’d provide me access to those charts I’ll price it - but you won’t because you know I’m correct.

I don't do research for others. I'll leave that to you.

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . The word on the street is that Steelers are going to trade up to #9 or 11 for an OT . Please tell me that they are not going to do it . Steelers have too many holes to give up draft capital , even if they recoup some of it from moving down from 32 spot . I like Omar Khan aggressiveness in FA but that will be a case of being aggressive to a fault . Thank you
Gerry Dulac
11:01
Do not always trust the word on the street. It's easy to say they could trade up or trade down because, well, yeah, they COULD trade up or trade down. They've done it in the past. It's a possibility, sure, but so is the Steelers winning the Super Bowl. But, if they do, I don't think it will be for an O-lineman. A CB, yeah. One of the DL they really like, yeah. But I think they will let the tackles fall to them.

Thanks for the chats Gerry.  Has the fact that covering sports as your job all these many years had any impact on your enjoyment as a spectator of the Steelers and sports in general? If yes, how?
Gerry Dulac
11:03
Robert, very thoughtful, introspective and professionally personal question that requires a very short answer: Yes. Not with the Steelers and golf, which is what I do, but just about every other sport. I don't pay attention to them like I used to, if at all.

You stated in a recent article that the Steelers have trouble drafting corners, but justified it by saying others teams do too.  The Steelers don't have an issue drafting corners - Tomlin does.  Noll drafted Woodson and Blount.  Cowher drafted McFadden, Ike, Gay.  Why the excuses for Tomlin?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
The story reflected their inability during Tomlin's tenure, not Noll or Cowher. But thanks for misunderstanding.

Historically, can you give me your opinion regarding the first 16 players off the board?  In percentages, how many are busts, how many are decent players, but drafted too high and how many become stars that were worth taking that high?  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:08
I have not researched that, and doubt I will ever have the time or inclination to do. But I will say this -- typically, there are only about 3-4 elite, sure-fire, future Pro Bowl players in a draft. Sometimes, not even that many. Doesn't mean Pro Bowlers or Hall of Famers can't come from any other spot or round. The draft is an inexact process, which is why some of those sure-fire guys become busts, too.

So GMGD - you moving up to get Johnson or Jones?   if you can't - you think Porter is around at 17?  and is Wright a possibliity at 32?  Let us inside your draft war room !!!!

To what do you attribute the obsession with the NFL pre-draft hype? Why do fans engage so steadily in the lead up when pegging an accurate draft forecast let alone actually seeing teams achieve success with their picks is such a crap shoot?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
Hey Robert, one thoughtful, good question is enough. How did you sneak in here with two???
Jeremy, VT
11:09
Good morning Gerry.  Why are we not hearing much about Myles Murphy at 17?
Gerry Dulac
11:10
Because OLB/edge is not a target in the first round. But never say never.
David
11:10
What are your thoughts if the Steelers surprised everyone and selected Nolan Smith from Georgia with their first pick?
Gerry Dulac
11:13
My thoughts are, I would be very surprised too. Not what they need.
Bill
11:13
Do you agree that this year and last year’s free agent signing frenzies by the Steelers are an indication how poorly they drafted over the last 5 years?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
To a degree, yes. But it's also an indication that they and other NFL teams think can find proven players in free agency rather than in the mid- to later rounds of the draft. It's kind of like the transfer portal in college. You can obtain proven players rather than guessing on high-school kids.

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . Do you see the possibility of Steelers taking an ILB in first 4 rounds ? It seems like a need because the starters  they signed have not been a regular starter for long  , are injury prone and the one back up is unproven depth . They do need a presence in the middle that can carry a big TE . What do you think ? Thank  you very much .
Gerry Dulac
11:15
That wouldn't surprise me, but no sooner than the fourth round.
Bill
11:15
How will each Steeler draft pick be decided during draft? Is there one person who will make the final call, or will there be some kind of vote to decide?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
Typically, it's done by agreement between GM and coach. In the previous regime, Kevin Colbert might have taken more of the lead with Mike Tomlin's confirmation and approval. I can't help but think it will be more of the other way around this year.
jay
11:18
Good morning Gerry.  If we can't get a top CB at 17, do you like Forbes at 32?  He could be Senquez 2.0 but his play is awesome if he can stay healthy at 166lbs.
Gerry Dulac
11:19
I think Kelee Ringo or Cam Smith would be more likely at 32 if they don't take one at 17
Dave
11:19
Gerry, you apparently know which players the Steelers like in the draft every year.  I am sure there is a limit to what they will tell you but have you ever felt they intentionally misled you on their feelings about a player?  And have you ever had a source give you information with the caveat that you were not to report it?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
I've never had the impression or the occasion where the Steelers have deliberately misled the media for their purposes. Quite the opposite, they are typically closed-mouth about their intentions. But I know of other teams, one in the Steelers' division, that have used some of their key media to unknowingly float false information to throw off other teams.

Good morning Gerry! Thanks as always for your grace and humor during this seemingly endless pre-draft build up. You, Ray and Brian are very generous with your time, knowledge and wisdom. IT'

JP, thanx. You have my sympathies if the Colts take Will Levis as the second QB drafted.
