Gerry:  Am I alone in thinking that having Tuitt back, that the Steelers will not only have one of the Best defenses in the league but also contend for a title with just an efficient offense?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
Leonard, I'm afraid you are alone in your thinking.

You'll get this 1000 + times but got to ask.  Everyone thought the pick was Malik, why was everyone so off on the qb the Steelers preferred? How surprised were you that it was Kenny over Malik?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
I wasn't shocked because I knew they liked Pickett. But I was a bit surprised. Also, some draft experts had Pickett going to the Steelers, though not as many who thought it would be Willis.

I thought the Steelers passed on some good tackle prospects in the 6th to get Heyward. Did the team indulge an emotional/familial connection, or was he rated that highly?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
I think you got that one partially figured out

The Ravens always do a lot of maneuvering and still seem to get their guy along with extra picks. Since the draft is such a crapshoot, having a bunch of picks seems like a good idea even if some will end up getting cut. The Steelers just stay put and pick their guy. What do you think is the best strategy?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
It depends how good and how deep your team is. If you a playoff team that needs that extra gear, I think the best strategy is targeting the guy you really want in the first round and moving to go get him. That's why I liked the strategy -- repeat, strategy -- to go get Devin Bush in 2019. Now, it turns out Bush is not the player they envisioned, and for that their evaluation process should be roundly criticized. But I didn't have a problem at the time with the thought process behind the move

Everyone is saying Leal needs to gain 20 or so lbs.  Remind me but didnt Keisel play at around 290 lbs?
Gerry Dulac
11:27
Yes, at the start, but he got up to around 300 pounds for sure.

Gerry, I know the Steeler draft has mixed reviews, but why do the Ravens get such high draft accolades??? They not only failed to address their biggest weakness, they allowed it to become a bigger weakness by trading Brown. How can all these great choices learn how to catch Lamar's inaccurate throws?
Gerry Dulac
11:30
You know, I'm always surprised at the Ravens reluctance to find receiving targets for Lamar. But they did the same thing for Flacco. That being said, the Ravens draft the Ravens style -- with big body players to punish teams along the line of scrimmage. I loved each of their first five picks. I give them an A+

Hi Gerry, if both Alualu and Tuitt return and are healthy (big if) how much better is our run D this year versus last year?
Gerry Dulac
11:34
It can't be any worse. Not after the way they performed. But there is no question a big part of that awful performance is because Tuitt never did play and Alualu missed all but two games. I thought Chris Wormley developed into a solid player and they think Isaiahh Loudermilk is going to be very good. And picking up Montravius Adams in December was a nice move. But none of them are Tuitt and Alualu.

Gerry can't we at least get through training camp & preseason before the fans start crying about draft picks. I remember quite a few of them being crazy because of the T.J. Watt pick.
Gerry Dulac
11:34
You're right. Happens every year with draft choices. Can't please everyone.

Is Colbert going to make the HOF?
Gerry Dulac

He should.

Hi Gerry - when the Steelers traded up to get D. Bush a few years back, there was such an emphasis on replacing Shazier it almost felt necessary.  It was a collective sigh of relief.  I felt the same way with Pickett.  Hope.  I know its not an analytical or value argument, but it felt the same.  Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:38
I think they hope Pickett turns out to be a better selection than Bush. The Bush move looks bad now because of how far they moved up to get him (10 spots) and at what spot they selected him (10th overall). Any time a QB is drafted on the first round, there are immediate high expectations. And the failures are probably much greater than the successes because teams often reach (or feel as though they are under pressure) to find that elite QB

11:38
Is CB the biggest unit weakness now on the Steelers or would you say it is QB?
Gerry Dulac
11:38
Probably is. But there's still time to make a move.

Gerry, hearing a lot about the possibility of K Green moving from C to guard. What leads to the assumption that he will be better there and do you agree?
Gerry Dulac
11:43
Because he played nearly his entire college career there. People always want to point up that Mike Webster and Dermontti Dawson, two HOFers, switched from guard to center. What they forget is that each didn't do so until they had a full season to get acclimated to the speed and power of the NFL. Green didn't. He was thrown in at center after starting just four games in college. Give him a chance.

Since there was a seeming lack of quality QB’s available in FA/Draft this year what should the Steelers be able to get for a guy that had a 1st round grade in the draft a few years ago…?
Gerry Dulac
11:44
A fifth-round pick. If they're lucky, a fourth.
Nick
11:44
Gerry, were you surprised they took a QB in first round?
Gerry Dulac
11:44
Not after the time and travel they invested to study each of the top seven QBs in the draft.

For a team that doesn’t use a FB I guess the upside is that we can now have one on a rookie contract rather than a high-priced FA. Is this another negotiating tactic for a contract that needs to get done, a la Watt? Cam being due $16ish million for each of his age 34/35 seasons seems like it needs some work…
Gerry Dulac
11:46
I'm sure that was exactly what they were thinking. Derek Watt is the third highest paid fullback in the league who averages 4.3 offensive snaps per game. One way or another, some All-Pro defensive player is going to be disappointed when they cut his brother.

Hi Gerry thanks for the chats! The picks of Heyward and Oladokun were unnecessary IMO as they would have been available as undrafted free agents. Not that there were a bunch of quality players in those rounds but maybe picking up an extra DL or DB for special teams might have been more prudent. What say you?
Gerry Dulac
11:48
I say you forgot the other guy they took in the seventh round -- ILB Mark Robinson. Probably could have signed him too as a free agent. However, I think someone might have drafted Cam's brother by the seventh round. One way or another, the Steelers were taking him, trust me.

I was a bit perplexed on why the Steelers didn’t take a DL/OL earlier in the draft. Which positions do you feel still need some attention?
Gerry Dulac
11:49
You're not alone

11:49
Any idea how team plans to use Leal?
Gerry Dulac
11:49
I think that's what the Steelers have to figure out. That was the problem NFL teams had with him -- they were not sure where he fit.
Henry in Blawnox

So Kenny Pickett has a relationship with Peyton Manning.  In NO WAY am I comparing the two, however, I keep hearing Pickett has an amazing work ethic.  Do you think he will “study” like Manning which could make up for his arm weakness.  Being a QB in the NFL is also about being smart.
Gerry Dulac
11:53
I'm sure he does and that's important. But you can't find a quarterback anywhere smarter than Josh Dobbs, who spent two summers working at NASA, could recite the first 48 digits of pi and knew the playbook inside and out. Now that's smart.

11:54
I believe they really like Pickett, but part of it is that there was no way they were going to have another Marino situation, which still haunts the Rooneys all these years later.
Gerry Dulac
11:55
There might be something to that. But, if there was, it would only be because Art Rooney II could hear his dad on his shoulder, reminding him what happened in 1983
