You mean in practice in shorts with no pads and no defense trying to take off their heads??

Gerry: in theory, a player with one year left on his contract will sign a cheaper long term deal than what they expect to get in free agency because they reduce risk by getting the money sooner.  In practice, I think most players overvalue themselves and therefore demand way more than what would be a logical amount to sign early.  Do  you think it is time for the Steelers to just start bidding for their own players in free agency as opposed to overpaying them a year early?

I get your point, but no. If they value a player -- and that's their job, to evaluate them and judge their importance -- sign him early to avoid FA. That being said. I'd be willing to bet Nick Herbig's guaranteed money that he received more from the Steelers than he would have in free agency.

Gerry: Many Steeler media members are not worried about the impact of these recent signings on the salary cap because they perpetuate the idea that Omar Khan is some kind of cap wizard.  Do people just forget that Khan "lost" Mike Wallace, Emanuel Sanders, Bud Dupree, Javon Hargrave, and Lev Bell during his time supposedly as a cap guru and the Steelers have very rarely had the cap space available to bring in major external free agents?  Isn't Khan's recent "success" in not losing key players to free agency mainly a result of just not having that many good players in the first place?

Hey, you can't keep em all. But they lost those guys because they had to pay the guys in front of them first

So as many as 5 of the 7 picks from 2023 could have extensions, and Broderick Jones MIGHT get healthy. Is the credit to Omar or Tomlin. LOL.

Pass the credit around at your pleasure.

Who’s more involved in football operations- Art II or his father?
Gerry Dulac
10:44
Dan was more involved for a longer period of time. But both try not to meddle with a coach's decision to build a roster.

Who you rooting for in the Stanley Cup?  Careful now, I'm a Vegas transplant and VGK fever is everywhere! We could use your support tonight!

I'm not.

Steelers are revamping their entire special teams.  They let Smith go and a lot of their aces - Killebrew, Heyward. How easy is a total makeover?
Gerry Dulac
10:45
Relax. I think they'll be fine. Remind me how many games special teams wo/n last year? 2024?

Gerry. 100 million for Nick Herbig?  I can't see how they afford all 3 and Porter and Benton to extend or offer a new contract this year.  Maybe next when Rodgers and likely Ramsey are no longer with the team
Gerry Dulac

It's a lot, that's for sure. I still believe someone has to go if and when they sign JPJ

The 'tanking gang' is comical. Any team can trade up for a QB, and stars like Mahomes, Jackson, and Big Ben prove you don’t need a top pick to find one. No guarantee a draft even has many first round QBs. The logic is to torch a season for a 'franchise' savior, ignoring that the draft is a graveyard of first-round busts (looking at you Pickett). Also absurd is the idea that coaches and players, whose paychecks depend on winning, will gleefully join a synchronized march toward unemployment.

This is a steelers chat- but how much have the Browns/Bengals/Ravens all improved this offseason?  Rank the AFC North by most improved heading into this year (giving credit for burrow getting back etc)?
Gerry Dulac
10:48
We take all kinds of questions in our chat. Most improved: Bengals, Ravens, Steelers, Browns. But doesn't mean the division will end up that way because it won't.

Gerry, thanks for the chats - always good stuff. Do you see any other contracts after Porter's? Odds of signing another free agent before camp?
Gerry Dulac
10:49
No more outside free agents, unless there's a significant injury at camp. That's all done

Seems what Joey Porter will eventually get paid on annual basis will put him in top 3-4 in the league. In NFL circles outside Pittsburgh is he really considered close to on par in performance with the likes of McDuffie and Surtain?
Gerry Dulac
10:50
I don't think he will paid like a top 3-4 CB. I think it's more likely he will be paid like a top 10 CB
