OK kids, we will start our chat in approx 30 minutes so get ready....

OK kids, lets get started....

Good Day Sir and thank you for your time!
What are your impressions of the defensive front 7 so far?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
The defensive line should be improved because of depth -- the addition of Larry Ogunjobi and the development of Isaiahh Loudermilk.  And I say that despite the retirement of Stephon Tuitt, who is better than all those guys. But it's what's behind them that is worrisome because of a lack of depth. There is nobody of caliber behind TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith on the outside and the only impactful player inside appears to be Miles Jack. Devin Bush needs to show something more than he has, which is not much, and Robert Spillane is nice against the run but a liability against the pass. And there is no proven depth after that. So, keep your fingers crossed....

with the 3 game preseason format. Which game do teams use as the “dress rehearsal”?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
That's what we're going to find out. I'm not convinced Mike Tomlin is going to play everyone in Week 3, so Jacksonville game might serve as the dress rehearsal for most of the starters and older players. The last game will be used to get backups some playing time and make decisions.

Hi Gerry, I was out of town and missed the game.  In the past you reserved comments on players until you've seen them in action. Granted, still preseason, but what were your impressions on the OL?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
I thought their run blocking was good. After all they rushed for 187 yards and were able to spring some long runs. Protection is still iffy, but it was better than what I was seeing in camp

Good Morning. Thank you as always for the chat. I do not get the clamoring of the Steelers fan base to trade Rudolph.  At worst, he is a high end Back up QB.  Considering that Pickett will be anointed the starter sooner rather than later, Trubiski will not want to stay for long as he has too much of the starter aspirations.  Would we not need another NFL ready QB on the roster ? If Mason is agreeable to stay, is it not better to keep him than trade him. He has always been a good soldier and has followed the company line despite Steelers bringing 3 new QBS and some of his teammates  being less than gracious in their comments . He has even offered to help out the rookies.  Am I missing something here ?  Thank you very much.
Gerry Dulac
10:59
You are not and I agree. Let me say this, Mason has handled all this -- the disrespect, his treatment -- with class and professionalism. Not to mention he has still been throwing the nicest ball at camp.

The OLB depth isn't good enough. Think we look at a vet?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
I really don't unless there is an injury. But I learned never to say never.

If McFadden and Warren, make the team does Snell? Has Tomlin ever kept 4 RBs and a FB?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Yes and yes.

Hi Gerry. Thanks for doing this chat. My question is a little different than your usual ones - do you know what kind of throwback uni’s we will be getting next? And are they going to leave the awesome color rush uni’s alone? Last one I promise - have any other (successful) QBs worn gloves on both hands?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Sorry, I do not. Apologies

Any chance we see Calvin Austin on Saturday night?
Gerry Dulac

I hope so.

It was clear after preseason game 1 that teams will continue to exploit our inability to cover at the lb spot. Seems crazy that they haven't figured out a way. Get creative or get new guys?!
Gerry Dulac
11:01
At this point it might have to be "get creative."

11:01
Givin what we've seen from Kenny Pickett so far, albeit a small sample size against 3 stringers, do you have a different opinion of the Steelers drafting KP?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
My beef wasn't with drafting Kenny Pickett, my complaint was not needing to draft a QB in the first round, no matter who it was.

I accidentally hit send before I was done: My observation, and I've been watching the Steelers since I was in my Hulk-a-Roos is that kid has the eye of the tiger. He came across as collected, business like, and prepared. The moment didn't seem to big for him, and that's exactly what you want from your first round pick. Again, I know it's a sample size, but the kid did put some great work on tape. What say you, my friend? Thanks for the chats!!!
Gerry Dulac
11:03
Hey Dave, didn't see what you sent previously, so not sure who you are referencing

Gerry what are a couple keys to watch for against Jax Saturday night? DBs?
Gerry Dulac
11:03
I'd watch Jaylen Warren. I think you are going to see him get more early snaps to see where he fits in the RB rotation.

Historically, It has never really been the Steelers philosophy to trade players as for say the Patriots. Do you think this philosophy would ever change? They seem to trade for other players and give up some draft picks but rarely the other way around for a so called quality player. Say for instance a player they may lose in a year due to wanting a new contract. Just curious on what your thoughts were and if this may change with Mr. Khan?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
They've made some minor trades where they gave away their own players, most notably Josh Dobbs to Jax a few years ago. But they believe in building depth, and once they do they're not eager to trade away someone to eradicate that depth. Hey, we've seen them doing several things over the past couple years that have been a bit out of character, so never say never.

Super Bowl here we come!
That first preseason game is such a great predictor.
Over half of the previous SB champions won their first preseason game so it must be really high odds for the Steelers this year....

When will there be accountability for the abysmal line play/personnel decisions on both sides of the ball? Do you think they upgraded enough to not get the quarterbacks killed and to stop running backs when they need to this year? Seems like a “no” on paper!
Gerry Dulac
11:07
We'll find out. I at least give them credit for make a number of moves -- James Daniels, Mason Cole, Larry Ogunjobi -- to address that.

Gerry, has there ever been an NFL team that utilized a 3 QB rotation for their games, all without being forced to do so?  I believe that a 2 QB system was used.  Teams would have to game plan for all 3.  Your thoughts.
Gerry Dulac
11:08
Two QB system are as a rare as a 3-dollar bill. Three QB rotation is a waste and total disruption to the players and a game plan. In other words, don't look for it in your lifetime

Trubinsky rode a backup roll before signing a contract with the Steelers. Why can't Rudolph do the same? He seems content to do this and it strengthens the Steeler bench. Why all the chatter to move him out?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
You raise a very good point, one that has been supported by more than a few.

Gerry, bigger concern, OL guard or ILB?  Limited by cap space and external talent being available, do you foresee any outside moves in an attempt to sure up prior to game one?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
Easy one -- ILB. Not even a contest

Have you generally been encouraged by what you've seen so far in camp and after one preseason game?  Are we moving in the right direction?  Appreciate your insight.
Gerry Dulac
11:10
I have been, especially offensively. And that was without 22, 88, 18 and 11. It was a very good step in the right direction but it was one preseason game. They need to do that when it counts.
