I read that Jones is blaming the change of position for his lack of development - are you buying that? It seems to me he was overvalued after only playing around 18 games in college.

The Steelers always thought he was a left tackle, not a right tackle, and I think his play proved that to be false. He was better on the right side.

Good morning Gerry. Comments from Coach McCarthy in the last week (“impasse”) and from Joey Porter, Jr. this week suggest that the contract negotiations may not be progressing well. I know some players have signed extensions within a week of the start of the regular season (Troy, TJ), but this feels a bit different. What is your impression?

They have not been progressing well at all, which is why they are still in this position. But I have seen this happen many times before and I have always believed a deal will get done before the season.

I noticed the Buffalo game was choreographed very similar to the Steelers game. Same 3rd down announcement everytime, bring out a veteran in the 3rd qtr to cheer for, things like that. Do the NFL teams share a company that puts the games on in the stadium. Only difference was the country singer in Pittsburgh. Which I know it’s been a long time since I’ve lived in Pittsburgh but it seemed out of place.

Hi Gerry,  The NFL's emergency third-quarterback rule allows teams to dress an extra quarterback on game day without counting against active game-day roster limits, provided that player is already on the regular 53-man roster. 

Who will the Steelers dress for the 3rd qb on gameday?

Does the lack of success of first round picks going back to Burns say more about coaching or front office evaluation?  Cant live life in the rearview, but also have to learn from mistakes to go forward... I hope that's part of what the McCarthy hire was about.. Cheers... Rich in TN

Rich, it's a little of both. Keeping all their draft picks is nice and shows due diligence on their part. But you need to hit a home run with the No. 1 pick and that hasn't happened in years.

Gerry, you seem to downplay the skill level and play of J. Porter, but no other CB has given up fewer TDs the last two years. I think he deserves top tier money and I predict he'll get it.

I wouldn't go to the casino with that one. It's not that I downplay his skill level -- I like Joe and I think he is a quality CB. But he is a not a top 5 CB and won't be paid like one. Believe me, that's not just my opinion

They are, but for the longest time have not had ANY significant movement. I think that will change soon. And you noticed that about the agents, eh??

Gerry, what’s your take on Robert Spears Jennings? His size, speed and aggressiveness are what has stood out to me in the preseason. Why did he last until the 6th round?

I don't know why some guys last that long when they have the size and speed. It was the same thing with Cory Trice. All I know is the Steelers REALLY like what they have seen from RSJ

Who do you think is a great sports writer outside of the Post Gazette these days?  I liked Jason Mackey a lot but he writes for the Pirates now and I suspect that impairs his ability to writes frankly.

I don't think there is any question. Unless there will be a rash of injuries, he will not get a chance to prove he won't be on the team

Was the trade of Broderick Jones, the reworking of D.K. Metcalf's contract, and release of Elandon Roberts done free up salary cap room in preparation to give Joey Porter Jr. a new contract? I hope the Steelers keep JP2 and don't do him dirty like they did his dad.
