It's scheme and finding the right players to fit that scheme. What is preventing the Steelers from doing the same?? Well....uh.....hmmmm....
Bill
10:16
Why do teams employ players well into their 30s like Aaron Rogers, Cam Heyward and Andrew McCutchen? Aren't they rolling the dice on their seasons due to a huge increase in injury susceptibility?
Gerry Dulac
10:16
Probably because they're good.

Gerry:  First Steeler possession:  Pickett to Johnson for 7 yards.  2nd play: The infamous Canada jet sweep to the left that gained nothing.  49ers were waiting for it.  To me, that play set the tone of a terrible 1st half until the two minute warning before half.  Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:17
One play does not make a half, let alone a game. But it was kind of a buzz-kill

The Steelers have spent a ton of money on their defense but are not getting the results they expect. Is execution the problem or is there some other missing component?
Gerry Dulac
10:19
Most of that money is spent on three or four players, and justifiably so -- 97, 90, 56 and 39. They need more young talent and that's what they're hoping they have with Leal, Benton and JPJ

Gerry, If the Steelers could throw the ball deep or over the middle, perhaps the linebackers would back off into coverage thus helping the running game to open up.  Am I the only one who noticed this?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
You are right. But when you don't have a lot of time to throw -- did you see that 49ers pressure? -- and your quarterback is not very accurate, the chances of having success doing that are not very good.

The owner of this chat has advised us all not to pay attention to preseason results.  The owner has also reminded us about the lack of playoff appearances and wins, including blowouts in the last three playoff games.  At what point is it not a surprise that our stadium is filled with the other team's fans? People may just be getting tired of the "coach speak" and on field results.  Especially, on a warm Sunday afternoon when there are other things to do.
Gerry Dulac
10:21
Not sure who you are blaming here Steve.

Would you have put Pickens for the very next play after his foolish, immature, selfish personal foul penalty?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
Nope
Harry Kallas
10:21
Could Mike Sullivan or Glenn Thomas replace Matt Canada as offensive play-called in season?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
Nope

Is George Pickens a ticking time bomb? Should we be worried about his behavior?
Gerry Dulac
10:22
I wouldn't be dismissive of it

The Steelers looked like they lost because they were out muscled rather than anything schematic. Is that how you saw.it?
Gerry Dulac
10:23
No. They were simply outplayed. And when they happens you can look slower and out-muscled.

Montravius Adams, Isiah Loudermilk and Dan Moore ALL Stink - why is Benton not starting over a journeyman yet, a proven pro in A. Watts not getting a helmet over a kid that gets pushed around too easily in Loudermilk and our 1st round pick we moved 3 spots up for in B. Jones not starting over the worst rated LT in all of football?? WHY??
Gerry Dulac
10:23
I'll ask Tomlin
Sara Jay
10:23
Will the Steelers make a run at JJ Watt?
Gerry Dulac
10:24
Sara, let's me think .... uh.... NO!!!!!

I thought the off season FA signings and rookie draft picks would improve the talent level of the Steelers. We looked JV vs Varsity. So either we don’t have the ‘Joes’ to compete with the hood teams or our coaches stink. Likely it’s both. So, what is the owners next move?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Wait for the next 16 games to unfold and see what happens. I'll remind you they went in to Cincinnati last year in the season opener and won, and look what happened after that. It's one game.

Will the Steelers consider trading Mitch Trubisky to the Jets?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
For a No. 1 pick they would. But that isn't happening either

Two questions sir.  1. What does the Steeler brain trust see in MC the OC?  He is over matched most games in calling plays.  2.  Is Pickens not getting open or again poor plays being called?  Hard to watch such ineptitude.  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
10:27
1) That question has been asked many times since last season and I'm not exactly sure of the answer; 2) Diontae Johnson was getting open.

I know Rooney likes stability, but are we at the point of it causing predictability?  Other teams know our game plans and play calls.  Wouldn't some new blood make other teams adjust and possibly give our players the motivation and kick in the rear that they desperately need?
Gerry Dulac

Is there a like button anywhere??

Hi Gerry  It's Deja Vu all over again with the Inside LB's.   They run in circles, slow to the ball and when they tackle you can always see the opposing players nameplate.  Is it the turnstile of players....or is this Really bad coaching? Did the Khan artist Con us?  Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:30
I'm willing to give them more than one game. All three are new players and are adjusting to each other and the defense. It's kind of like the offensive line last season -- what we saw early as opposed to how good they were later. Not saying it's going to be the same, but let's give it some time first.

Given the fact Tomlin doesn't ever hire a talented OC or DC this team is always at a disadvantage in regards to coaching talent. Is he that insecure that he wouldn't bring in someone who might actually become a head coach? The coaching mismatch Sunday was embarrassing.
Gerry Dulac

Everything was embarrassing on Sunday, that included.

Might just be my bad memory but it seemed to me that whether it was a scramble from the pocket or QB motion off play action that KP moves to his left most every time, forcing him to throw back across his body when pressure came. Connecting on a pass moving in this manner is challenging at best.  Intuitively I’d expect him to roll right more often. Did you notice this as well and isn’t this coached?
Gerry Dulac
10:31
I haven't paid attention or documented the times he rolls right or left. I'm sure those NextGen stats do. While throwing across your body moving to the left is difficult, he does do that very well.

During Sunday's game against Niners, Pittsburgh never once tried throwing deep to put pressure on SF Secondary.  Even last season, when Pickett was under center, they rarely took shots downfield.  In your opinion, is this by design (through Canada/Tomlin) or is this Pickett's lack of confidence?
Gerry Dulac
10:32
It is more by design

Hi, Gerry. Obviously the Steelers won't replace Canada during the season. But does there seem to be a line of succession behind him? Like when Butler took over DC and it was a move that had been expected for years. For example, if Canada missed a game due to whatever hypothetical reason, who would step in and call the plays? I can't imagine Tomlin would call offensive plays. Just wondering if you had any insight based on watching practices and being around the locker room. Thank you!
