Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 10.22.25

Good morning Gerry, love your chats and pithiness. I think one of the problems with the defense is it’s too vanilla and predictable. Rarely see any CB blitzes and QBs are feasting with time to throw. Don’t you think CoachT is going to have to get more creative to stay relevant in games?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
The only QB who feasted on time to throw was Flacco. Go ask Wentz or Gabriel, who were sacked a combined 12 times and hit 30 times, if they thought they had time to feast. And I recall Ramsey having two sacks against the Browns. The things you are claiming they don't do they are doing

Hey Gerry. Who would have thunk after 6 games, the Steelers would be struggling on D and offense looks good. Young O-line rounding into form and ARod looks spry!  The defense is still a mess.  Yes they still can’t stop the run but it’s the short passing game that kills them and has since Brady and company tore them up 10+ years ago.  What’s worse is players on opposing teams chirping they “knew” what Steelers would do defensively?  How can this ever get fixed???  Cheers bud
Gerry Dulac
10:26
Yeah, the offense has very good. Have responded just about every time they needed to. The other night was a perfect example. But the defense couldn't come up with another stop.

If it were me, I would decline option on both Benton/JPJ unless things improve dramatically right?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
Wrong

Gerry,  like many fans I was worried about the Tomlin bravado going into last weeks game against the Bengals, and that our defense was going to be outmatched.
Gerry Dulac
10:26
And they were!

The Bengals debacle is in the rear view mirror, and while I agree that CoachT was right about the Flacco trade, it just made him come off as afraid. You think CoachT was living in his fears?
Gerry Dulac
10:28
I think what was "afraid" was the way the Steelers defended Chase and Higgins. They played scared against them, giving them too much room. Just because you play man coverage doesn't mean it's press man coverage. If you're going to play a QB like Flacco who releases the ball so quickly, get up on the line of scrimmage and don't give his receivers a free release. Disrupt their routes and their timing. If anybody saw of some that, let me know.
Hi Gerry -
10:29
Personnel wise, where do you see the Steelers going from here?  Ride out the vets for 2025, make a few additions at the trade deadline, or cull the heard next year before free agency and the draft.  This supposes they have the same result as recent years, get into the playoffs as a low seed and get beat convincingly in the first round. Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:30
That's going to be a great question after the season, even if they have success. And, if they don't have the success they're seeking, there'll be more changes again

Hi Gerry. Do you believe we'll see Cory Trice on the field when and if he's healthy? I haven't seen enough of him to know if he's a physical cornerback (run support) or is he in JPJ's mold?
Gerry Dulac
10:30
I don't think so. Don't know where they'll play him. And he hasn't played all year
Hi Gerry -
10:31
When I look at the WR room in isolation, I pray nothing happens to DK.  In looking at the entire offense, I realize that there is only one ball and a decent group of playmakers with the TE’s and RB’s.  That said, isn’t the need for a real #2 critical in the pursuit of more playoff success?
Gerry Dulac
10:31
There really be if DK gets hurt

Do you think the Steelers and other quarterback needy teams screwed up by passing on Jaxson Dart?
Gerry Dulac
10:31
It sure looks like it. He is this year's Bo Nix

10:32
You often mention Mike Tomlin as someone who watches more film than anyone else. Why doesn't it help him make better coaching decisions at the end of games?
Gerry Dulac
10:32
It helps make him a better coach
Bill in LA
10:32
What in your opinion are the top three flaws of Mike Tomlin as a coach?
Gerry Dulac
10:32
Tell you what, Bill, I'll let you answer first and then I'll see if I agree with you, OK?
Tony
10:33
Hi Gerry.  After the latest defensive debacle, do you think the Steelers will rebound with a win vs. Green Bay, or will they be powerless to stop their offense which has become a recurring nightmare?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Tony, they're a 4-2 team that just had a three-game win streak ended and are in first place by two games. I've seen this situation so many times over the years that it wouldn't surprise me if they won 40-0. Don't judge week to week
Pittfan
10:34
Hi Gerry. Do you believe in the matchup theory? Are there players and teams who just flat out play well against other teams? Tomlin really seems to fear Flacco.
Gerry Dulac
10:35
Absolutely. Some teams just match up better than others. Why does Lamar Jackson struggle against the Steelers? Why do the Bengals slice the Steelers defense?
Rinse and Repeat
10:35
Gerry, When will it be enough? We have seen the same, tired schemes on defense for years. The talk about moving Watt around is well, talk. Predictable, stale and outdated. We all know on paper that Austin is the DC, but you know Tomlin is calling the shots. When will Rooney wake up and see we aren't on the same level as the top contenders in the league?
Gerry Dulac
10:36
I think you need to ask me this after 16 games, not six, not when they're 4-2. Let's wait and see what happens.
Lou
10:36
Hey Gerry!  Which move do you make to help the Steelers? Trade for WR or maybe more DB or DL help?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
Ok, answer me this -- if they trade/sign a wide receiver, after what you've seen, where will they play him? D-line? That's why they drafted Harmon and Black. And DB? Did you see how many they signed or traded for in the offseason.

When you were in Paris, were you able to figure out why French peiple are so peculiar?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
Bill....I'm French

Tomlin blamed the loss on run defense, penalties and turnovers. You think he really believes that or just wants to deflect blame on the miserable performance of the secondary he blustered about in Latrobe?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
It was a bad combo of run defense and poor secondary play. Complete failure

10:38
Gerry, does MT live in a bubble or do you think he knows that the vast majority of Steelers nation would like to see him leave the team?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
I'm not sure you can speak for the "vast majority," but, either way, I don't think he pays much attention to that. He understands the business -- not everyone is going to like him. Kinda like these chats.
Mike
10:39
What do you think are the main reasons with Ramsey's performance lately?  Slowing down with age, playing too many positions?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Did you think that after the first five games?
SteelerMark
10:40
Mr D long time reader of your work and enjoy your opinions.  This season has me thinking that our roster has been poor the last several years and maybe Tomlin has done more with less?   What do you think?
Gerry Dulac
10:41
Well, that's why so many of the national media applaud him for what he does -- gets more from less. And they are not wrong in that regard
