OK kids, we're going to get started in just a few so get those questions ready....
9:57
OK, let's get started...Go!!

Based on the last game, I think many of us underestimated how important Dionte is to this offense. Whom else on the O might we be underrating?
Gerry Dulac
9:58
Nobody like that. DJ's importance is based on his ability to get open and make plays after the catch. They don't have another receiver who can separation like he does. And I think you saw on those middle crossing routes how it creates more room for George Pickens

Good morning, Gerry, Thanks for the chats. Do you think that finances have played any role in keeping Matt Canada this year? I mean they would have had to pay the rest of his contract and then pay a new OC to take his place. Essentially paying for two OC's.  Any thoughts on that possibility?
Gerry Dulac
9:59
Those are more than just thoughts, Gus.

Hey Gerry, thanks for the chats, I look forward to them every week. Do you think there’s any chance we trade for a quality corner before the deadline? Our starters sure look like liabilities back there
Gerry Dulac
10:01
I wouldn't rule it out, only because I've learned not to. I will tell it has been quiet on the trade front as far as the Steelers are concerned. But, as the deadline gets closer (and teams get more desperate), activity and discussion tend to increase dramatically.

Hey Gerry, is there any reason to believe Omar Khan will be active at the deadline based on his recent history or are the Steelers content with this group? We need a CB lets be honest.
Gerry Dulac
10:01
I wouldn't rule out the possibility Tom.

Hi Gerry:  Thanks for the chats.  Was Chris Boswell hurt last year?  He is just booming his kickoffs this year—all to the back of the endzone with no run backs.  He looks so much stronger this year, never looked better.  He really is "Money."
Gerry Dulac
10:02
Yes he was, bothered by some injury that apparently is going him from time to time. But he is one of just six kickers in the league who hasn't missed a FG or PAT this year. Of course, now that I just jinxed him....

How many points per game do they need to average over the last 11 for Canada to return? Will they meet that number?
Gerry Dulac

432

Why isn’t the NFL smart enough to understand too many penalties makes for unwatchable football? Unless the penalty is obvious, and directly impacts the play, don’t call it.
Gerry Dulac
10:05
JBD, I've thought for a while. If a penalty doesn't directly affect the play, pickup the flag. Of course, that would require an interminable discussion as well, so, on second thought, just step it off and let's get on with it. But, because you asked, Mike Tomlin was indirectly saying that neutral zone infraction call against TJ Watt was chicken bleep, and he was right. I think the paint abnormality on the front of his facemask was over the line and they called it. Geeziz.

Gerry. do you have an understanding about how timeouts work?… what’s the difference between just a regular “ time out” and a “30 second time out”?… and what exactly determines that… thought you might be able to shed a little light..thanx
Gerry Dulac
10:08
Most timeouts are 30 seconds except for TV advertising timeouts. If a team calls a timeout and the network doesn't want to go to a commercial, or doesn't need to, then the timeout is just 30 seconds.

WHat is the rule with toe tapping? His heal came down on the line so his foot was out of bounds I thought-
Gerry Dulac
10:09
The explanation on TV is that he tapped his toe in bounds, regardless what the rest of the foot did, just like when a receiver taps his toe inbounds before the rest of his foot drags out of bounds.

Hey Gerry. Do you think a CB or WR will be added via trade before the deadline?  Also…Corey Trice—-think he and Porter will be starting CBs in 2024?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
No wide receiver, at least not one of note. I wouldn't rule out a CB. Not saying it's going to happen, but I have thought since the preseason that was one position that was an injury away from being a little dicey

Gerry,  what adjustments, if any, did the coaches make at the half against LA because they looked like a different team?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
Well, look, they are not going to tell us or anyone what adjustments they made and announce their "secrets," if you will. But I think one of them that was apparent was moving TJ Watt around, even lining him in coverage, and you saw how that worked out.

Hi Gerry:  Thanks again for the chats.  According to all reports I read Kevin Dotson is playing lights out for the Rams, getting top of the league PFF scores, but at Right Guard.  He had another great game against the Steelers last Sunday.  I recall one reason he was let go was he was not versatile and only a LG.  Was he misplayed at LG by the Steelers or just didn’t fit the Steelers scheme?
Gerry Dulac
10:15
His lack of versatility was that he didn't play tackle or center, not the other guard position. Also, I don't pay attention to those PFF grades because they were misguided too often. So, if they're giving Dotson high grades, well, good for him. But, hey, Dotson started 17 games last season, so it's not like he's a bum.

10:15
From comments you have made previously, I have concluded you don’t think much of PFF grades. Could you explain your position on this and tell fans how we should be judging the performance of the players. Some positions are more difficult to grade than others, but isn’t it obvious that Pat Pete and Wallace are terrible at the corners and PFF has that right?
Gerry Dulac
10:17
Well, I just said that so your timing is perfect. But, hey, if the fans want a grading system, which they do, then there is nothing wrong with them reading PFF each week. I have seen too many times when their grading system does not accurately reflect a player's performance or impact in the game. Case in point, TJ Watt's grade against the Raiders. What a joke.

Hi Gerry- What to make about MT’s response to question about opening scripts during this week’s presser?  Lots of BS in that answer.  How about score a TD?  Did you find that response a tad curious?
Gerry Dulac
10:18
I find a lot of his answers to be curious. And what was that other word you used???
Accountability
10:19
The Steelers receivers showed lack of maturity and selfishness once again.  This time it was in their unnecessary taunting penalties.  Yesterday, I heard Tomlin discuss the reason as the tenor of the officials.  Does this deflection and lack of accountability help with these issues?  Our history of letting receivers get away with selfish actions has caused issues many times in the past.  Will he ever learn how to handle these situations?
Gerry Dulac

Gerry,   do you think Austin will be used much more this season?  Seems like they are using him less and less as the season progresses.  Thanks!!!
Gerry Dulac
10:19
I agree and I'm not sure why. I will try to find out why his snap counts and targets have dropped.

Hello Gerry. Do you see a scenario other than injury in which Broderick Jones gets on the field? Are the Steelers intentionally trying to develop him slowly? Thank you kindly
Gerry Dulac
10:20
It is intentional to a degree, and I'll be honest, I thought we'd see more of him as a tackle eligible, especially with a shortage of TEs. And we really haven't.

Thank you as always for the chat . Do you see any reinforcements coming at the trade deadline?  It seems that addition of a Pass catching tight end because of Friermuth being on IR and a Corner can really help this team  . Thank you very much .
Gerry Dulac
10:21
Don't hold your breath on a tight end. That's not going to happen. But a top-tier corner would be a good addition.
Fundamentals
10:21
What is going on with our tackling?  I noticed lots of missed tackles, attempts at shoulder tackles, and most disturbing many tackles with the top of the helmet and eyes looking straight down.  Haven't these guys been tackling since they were kids?  Our fundamentals have declined each decade and tackling with your head has become common over this past decade.  Does our coaching even staff teach fundamentals?  If so, a new teaching method is needed.
Gerry Dulac
10:21
I hate to tell you, that's the entire NFL. Just watch. They all do it.
