Johnson and Pickens are selfish or at least seem selfish imho. Unsportsmanlike penalties like that could cost us a win. Ask Vontaze Burfict. What behind the scenes do you think was said/done to these guys to try to get them to see the big picture? I do understand you want fire from your players but they must play under control.

Agreed. That usually is not DJ's style and I was surprised when he did that. I was not, however, surprised when Pickens did that. And I'm continually surprised when coaches leave those players in the game after committing such stupid penalties instead of yanking them from the game and making them sit a while -- and, gee, who knows, maybe teach them a lesson not to do it again???? BTW, I just watched Burfict's idiocy (and PacMan's) again last night in some Twitter post about the 2016 playoff game.

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . I saw a significant improvement in kenny Pickett last week against Rams . Perhaps improvement in OL play and DJ return has helped. Did you see significant improvement in Picket play ? I have always believed that with better protection , he can be a top 10 QB in the league. Thank you very much .

I'm not going to assign number ranks to where Pickett stands in the league. But I think his improvement in most noticeable in the second half of games. However, if you watch him in the first half of games, you wouldn't think he was improving at all. In fact, you might think the opposite.

Hi Gerty - While I agree that Matt Canada's offense is not suited for the NFL, the issues are bigger. When KP calms his feet and stays in the pocket, delivers the ball to his playmakers and let's them make plays the outcomes change. Hence the 4th quarter success. He handles himself differently in the second half. What are your thoughts and can this be coached?

He is definitely a different (and better) QB in the second half of games -- dramatically. He has demonstrated that continually. Why? Who the heck knows. But I do think it has to do with getting more comfortable with and understanding what the opposing defense is doing. I think it takes young quarterbacks a little longer to process because, hey, they're young QBs.

I just don’t get it, Gerry.  Listening to the halftime show Sun, Phil Simms says Miles Garrett is the best defensive player in football.  He always seems to come up small against the Steelers while TJ puts on a clinic. Just look at the comparables.  Garrett isn’t even the best defensive player in his own division!

You'd have to consider a veteran player who has some measure of marketability, a player such as Markus Golden or Levi Wallace. Even Mason Rudolph if some team has injuries and is desperate for a QB. That's where you can make a trade and get some value. Teams always overpay and over-evaluate QBs.

Tomlin stated yesterday that he didn't have the chance to talk to his players during the game to tell them not to taunt.  1.  Why doesn't his players already know that?  2.  What does Tomlin do that prevented him from having 5 seconds to talk to someone??  Typically he just looks like he is standing there calm watching the game.  He doesn't have a play card.  He doesn't have conversations with players on the bench.  If he can't reign in players in game, what is his role?

I don't recall him saying he didn't have time to talk to his players about the penalties. My only recollection is him saying he didn't have time to get an answer from the officials about why DJ's penalty wasn't as dead-call penalty instead of off-setting.

Two weeks ago in your quarter by quarter analysts you used the word “great” to describe Trubiski’s play last year. How can a QB who threw more INT than TD, including multiple crucial ones in the red zone in a one score loss to your biggest rival, be described as playing “great”?

Your mere expression of an off the cuff opinion about Jon Gruden as an OC candidate was totally misrepresented and blown out of proportion.  I am certain that you, as a legitimate legacy journalist, get quite frustrated with the click bait rumor monger pretenders that cannot even post an "article" with correct grammar.  Does the Steelers organization empower these individuals by giving them access in press conferences?  Or are they merely scavenging the work of you and your colleagues?  How does it work these days...how do these guys gain enough notoriety to have a platform?

I'm still not sure. But the problem is, they didn't call it a dead-ball foul, they called it a continuous penalty, which is wrong according to NFL Rule Article 14, Section 1B
