Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 10.27.21

OK kids, we will start our chat in about 20 minutes so get those questions ready...
10:32
BTW, last week one of the chatters asked me why the Steelers don't have their captains wear a "C" on their jersey, like other teams. I said I didn't know the answer. Well, my media/radio associate Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, a die-hard advocate/reader of our chats, provided the answer: "The Steelers already have a patch on the front of their jerseys in the form of the team’s logo. This absolves them from having players wear the “C” patch on the front of the jerseys as well. Too cluttered." Pay the man!

OK, here we go....

What do you consider a "winning season" Above 500 or actually winning a playoff game and being a legit contender?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
Well, depends if you quantify the season statistically or philosophically....

Hi Gerry:  Thanks for the chats.  Regarding Bush and Banner returning from ACL surgery.  Why do so many discount it may take nearly 1.5-2 years for full recovery?  Did anyone notice Bud Dupree is a shell so far; played 4 of 7 games; 5 tackles, 0 TFL, and 1 sack.  Why push them and then complain about lack of peak performance?
Gerry Dulac
10:58
Your point is well taken, though it's usually one to 1 1/2 years tops for a player to get back where they were before ACL injury. I'm with ya, though

Last week you were asked why the Steelers don’t wear the Captain’s patch. It came up again in Brian’s chat yesterday. I recall it’s because they wear the Steeler’s emblem, and they can only wear one patch unless the NFL gives permission for a second temporary one to honor a special season, person, award, game, etc.

And I realize you posted the question before I posted that answer at the start of the chat.

Hi Gerry!
Why so much interest in Deshaun Watson if he is going to be punished for a long time? I don´t understand.

Gerry - Thanks for the chats.  Does Marcus Allen get any snaps?  I don't remember seeing him on the field lately even the they seem to play a lot of sub-packages?
Gerry Dulac
11:03
You haven't seen him for a good reason: He has not played a defensive snap this season. All his snaps (103) come on special teams.

What adjustments do you think they will make to not allow the Cleveland offensive line to control the line of scrimmage?  That 3rd quarter in the Seattle game makes me pretty nervous going into this game.
Gerry Dulac
11:05
What happened in that Seattle game was all on the coaches. The Steelers came out in the second half in their nickel defense, thinking the Seahawks would throw after trailing 14-0. And all the Seahawks did was run the ball. The coaches never adjusted. Never.

There is no question that Harvin has been inconsistent, and you are very quick to point out his mistakes. But why do you NEVRR give him credit when he performs well. A good example is his game changing booming punt in OT last week. You ripped him early in the game for the one shank but said nothing about the great punt in OT. Why not give him credit when he deserves it?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
That was the only time he has done that this season when he has had a long field. And I gave him credit for that. His reputation is having a big leg. And, when presented the opportunity to display it. he has not delivered.  That doesn't mean he won't going forward.

Are the Bengals legit? Or was it just one of those big upsets you see and they end up not being quite as good?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
They are legit.

How awesome was Coach Tomlin in shutting down those college rumors?

Masterful

Gerry, Have you played East Lake? Atlanta Athletic Club? Or Augusta National?
Ps.  Keep up the good work

Only one of the three, but the best one.

Gerry … do the Steelers eventually have to tell tuitt it’s time to play.   I mean this has gone on long enough.  If he is healthy (which by reports it seems he is) it’s time to get out there or retire.   He’s making waaaaaay to much money to be “sad”.  Death in families happen to all of us.   How many pro athletes play the next day after a tragedy.  This is absurd
Gerry Dulac
11:09
I'm not going to judge any player or person how they handle grief that comes with tragedy. And I doubt the Steelers will either. That decision will have to come from Tuitt and him only.

Hi Gerry - based on your years of attending Mike Tomlin's weekly and postgame media conferences, am I correct that he appeared genuinely angry/upset rather than just putting on an act by being rumored to be a candidate for the LSU & USC jobs?  If so, given his shot at the end about Andy Reid & Sean Payton not being asked about those job openings, is his anger attributed to a perceived lack of respect for his accomplishments as a NFL coach compared to his peers by being linked to jobs he sees as a step down either because he is regarded by Terry Bradshaw among others as mostly a "cheerleader" and/or this possibility raised by Michael Rosenberg in SI.com                                                      "Why? Well, he didn’t say. But it’s probably easy to figure out. Payton is white. Reid is white. And if—if—Tomlin is annoyed by the racial implications here, he has every right to be."                                                                 https://www.si.com/nfl/2021/10/26/mike-tomlin-response-usc-ru
Gerry Dulac
11:17
He wasn't angry as much as he was annoyed. And I have never known Mike Tomlin to ever play any kind of race card, which is what the SI writer is implying while also trying to applaud Tomlin for feeling indignant. I think the reason Tomlin singled out Reid and Payton is because they are the only coaches, beside Bill Belichick, who have been in the league longer than Tomlin. It has NOTHING to do with them being white, which makes Rosenberg's suggestion idiotic, if not offensive.

Do you see making any moves by the trade deadline? Obviously not likely earth shattering but maybe some depth moves?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
I wouldn't rule it out. If they did, I would think it would be on the D-line.

Gerry - It looks like Freiermuth and Gentry's blocking ability is progressing?  With such an inexperienced offensive line, any reason why the tight ends and fullback aren't being used more to aid in the running game?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
The tight ends are being used more, especially Gentry. He has played 45 snaps the past two games, which is more than he played the first four games. It's apparent the Steelers have no interest in using a fullback for any appreciable amount of time. Derek Watt has played all of 28 snaps in six games, which amounts to just over four per game.

I’m sorry players in locker have to start questioning Tuitt.   He didn’t have acl surgery!   It’s been 8-10 weeks since his surgery.   Ots
Gerry Dulac
11:22
It's not about his knee. And I'd be willing to bet there isn't a player in the locker room who shares your sentiment.
Ben
11:23
Gerry.  You think Steelers draft or sign a free agent qb?   Tomlin sure has been taking about qb mobility.   We have no one on roster that can move
Gerry Dulac
11:23
Sign one? No. Draft one? Maybe. Though I'm not sure they think there is anyone in the draft better than what they have.

Hi Jerry, Just wondering why Friermuth hasn't been utilized in much the same way as a Kelce or Gronkowski?  With his route running ability and quickness he is a mismatch for most any linebacker I could see him open in some of those downfield routes.
Gerry Dulac
11:24
Let's give him some time, man. He has played just six NFL games. And I think he's doing OK. More importantly, so do they
CoalportKid
11:24
What defensive adjustments could the Steelers make against the running teams in the division to account for the DL losses?
Gerry Dulac
11:27
Good question. I don't think they have many options to make adjustments. But I will tell you one -- play Robert Spillane more. He is more physical and a better tackler and run stuffer than Bush and/or Schobert. There is a growing sentiment to get him on the field more, but, you know, when you trade up 10 spots to draft a player 10th overall and have a lot invested in him, well....
Sunner in Orlando
11:27
Good morning Gerry! Will the Steelers stay in a more base defense instead of nickel packages to defend the run better at least to start the game? Will Spillane get more snaps to help out in the run D as well?
