Knack on Russ is he takes to many sacks. Better than throwing picks. Your thoughts? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:16
And that's why he takes some of those.
Dave

Tomlin was very aggressive going for it on 4th down in the Browns game instead of punting.  Did that strike you as out of character?  I tend to think he is usually a patient and smart coach, playing the field position game and avoiding mistakes.
Gerry Dulac
10:17
The fake punt attempt from his own 16 in the first quarter in Washington should tell you it's not out of character for him.

Gerry, a lot of the game management decisions Thursday night were JV at best. Which one do you think was the worst? To me it was wasting a time out after accepting the illegal touching penalty.  If MT actually trusted his DC to call plays Austin could have had a 3rd and 7 and a 4th and 2 play ready. Was Burning a timeout with the clock stopped in that situation  the most egregious of the many miscues?
Gerry Dulac
10:18
It wasn't a good one. But it didn't cost them the game. The defense failing to protect the lead against the lowest scoring team in the AFC cost them the game

Happy Thanksgiving Gerry.  Why do I feel like I've seen this movie before?  Tomlin an d

Wich one....Planes, Trains and Automobiles? Great movie. Great ending

Hi Gerry, I am still trying to reconcile how Russell Wilson could have such an efficient performance -- in the snow, now less -- and have the overall offense be so inefficient.  Can you make sense of it?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
Red zone failures because of bad personnel groupings. Short-yardage failures (9 runs of zero or negative yards) because of bad personnel groupings. Not having him in the game on third-and-4 from their own 30 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining (bad personnel decision).

Please rank in order beginning with what is likely to hurt the Steelers the most during the remainder of the season: offensive line, wide receivers, coaching, quarterback, defense inability to close out the game.
Gerry Dulac
10:21
So far, I'd pick the last one.

Thanks for doing these.  There have been instances in the past where the OL has gotten better over the course of the season.  So far it’s been a weak spot.  Do you think it will improve in the remaining games?
Gerry Dulac
10:23
I wouldn't call it a weak spot. Considering that they lost three starters for the season with injuries, they have survived fairly well. But the protection has been a little leaky lately. (Say that three times quickly)

If the Steelers lose in the first round of the playoffs because the offense continues its slow starts and struggles in red zone, why would the front office commit big time money to Russ?  Such an investment would make it hard to be excited about the team, no?
Gerry Dulac
10:24
Let's see what happens first before we start examining future contracts
Gerry’s snarky retort.
10:24
With Tee Higgins banged up still do Tomlin and Austin do what Bill Bellicheat used to with Antonio Brown (double and triple team) to force the cats’ other weapons to beat the Steelers?
Gerry Dulac
10:24
Tee Higgins played last week and I expect him to play this week.
The Ger was right!
10:24
With stellar linebacker play, decent coverage and an aging line the Steelers take the Ger’s advice and go D line early and often in 25’ like they did Oline this year?
Gerry Dulac
10:24
Not just this year, the next two years -- just like they did for 2 years with the O-line

You don’t hear much about McCormick which is probably good for an OL. He seems to be doing pretty good, especially for a rookie 4th round pick. You have said Payton Wilson was the steal of the draft and I agree. Do you think McCormick was a comparable steal by Mr. Khan? I enjoy your insights which many of us would miss. Happy Thanksgiving.
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Mason McCormick has been very good. Yes, a bit of a steal on the fourth round.
Paid by Gerry.
10:25
Elliott and Queen looking like two of the Steelers’ all time good free agent acquisitions. Agree?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
I agree. And Jackson has upgraded the position opposite JPJ. All good moves. But they still need a No. 2 receiver who can get open.

Sure, it was an ugly win and no one here is happy about it. But aren't we over reacting a little bit? From total optimism to complete pessimism over night, fans and media included. I've seen articles on other sites questioning " Steelers done? ". Maybe I'm alone here in thinking this a huge over reaction. But a few better decisions and a few key plays and we win the game. Also, wasn't we all begging just last year and years before for more aggressive play calling? Now fans are wanting Tomlin fired for doing just that? This fan base has some serious mood swings.

Ya think..???
Ben
10:27
Do you feel we are underutilizing #39?  He is so far away from the line of scrimmage lately.  Should one of the highest paid safeties in the league be tasked with being the last line of defense to prevent the big play?  It seems like we are taking away his ability to make splash plays.
Gerry Dulac
10:28
Ben, and other people claim he is not making plays because he was being moved all around the defense and not staying put where he can make plays in the deep middle of the field.

Arthur Smith to UNC. Hearsay or possible?

Gerry, love your work!  What is Tomlin's record vs. teams who in the next draft in the Top 8 slots?  I can't imagine it is very good.  Thank you!
Gerry Dulac
10:29
Too much research. I don't Elias Sports Bureau even has that one

Everyone keeps highlighting that Tomlin and the Steelers are the only team in the league that is 5-0 versus teams with a winning record.  But the real question is why can't they seem to beat the bad teams consistently ? 0-3 against 3 bad teams, and 2 of the losses were to teams with their backup qb's playing.

What does your gut say about 56 returning this week?
Gerry Dulac
10:30
Another week probably.

10:31
Gerry, love the chats. Why did the Steelers feel content to drop 7 in coverage almost every down last week? They still had Browns players wide open.
Gerry Dulac
10:31
You mean do something drastic like, say, rush with five or six??
