Hi Gerry, I have been living in my fears that the current coaching arrangement would produce just enough to keep it in house.  Did that last offensive performance by the offense solidify that the Steelers will look outside for an OC next year?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
Unless things change, I'm sure they will go outside the organization for the next OC

Do you see immaturity in this team? Lazy route runners with bad attitudes and big mouths... a 7-4 team that takes an opponent lightly...lack of concentration on formation details...untimely penalties... And, does immaturity reflect coaching?
Gerry Dulac
10:11
To a degree, yes, because I can't imagine a coach playing a player who is not prepared or willing to play hard because of immaturity. Coaches today have to be motivators as well as teachers

I'm no Tomlin apologist — especially given his hand in building the roster. But realistically, this team should be closer to 3-9 than 7-5. Some of their wins are from good coaching decisions. But really, they’ve been lucky. (Or the other team’s coach decided to be stupid.)

Once Noll lost his roster of HoF players, he was a .500 coach. The word at the time was the same as what we're hearing now about Tomlin: the game had passed him up. I disagree. This team's biggest problem is Jimmys and Joe, not Xs and Os.

The front office has missed on top of the draft picks over last decade more often than not, and haven't gotten the gems they usually found once a year (Warren notwithstanding). The roster has studs and duds, and little in-between.

The game has not passed Mike Tomlin by, trust me on that. But they have had a couple wins handed to them -- Baltimore, the first Cleveland game, Rams. But to their credit they took advantage of the gifts.

Remember Tomlin's first year or so when he did "The News" and called out players for poor plays and lack of hustle?  He seemed motivated and didn't care about the perception of him.  What happened to that guy?  The existing Tomlin doesn't even resemble the younger coach.  Did he get his fame and money and get fat and satisfied like many of his players have over the years?  Has the national media put him on such a pedestal that he doesn't have to try anymore?  If he acted like he did in year 1 the past 12 years we wouldn't have wasted so many years of Hall of Fame players and possibly could have won more championships.
Gerry Dulac
10:17
I do remember that, and some of the players didn't like it when they were called out in his 'News.' I'm not privy to what goes on behind closed doors, but just because Tomlin doesn't admonish his players publicly doesn't mean his isn't disciplining them privately

This team couldn't win when it had one of the best offenses in the league with the Killer B's and it hasn't been able to win with defense in recent years either as the last three playoff losses emphatically illustrate. Doesn't that say something about the coach?
Gerry Dulac
10:18
Of course it does.

Hi Gerry - thanks for the chat.  There is a line in an Ernest Hemingway novel - “How did you go bankrupt?”…. “Two ways,” Gradually and then suddenly.”  After years of mediocrity, is Sunday’s debacle against the Cardinals, that appears to confirm again Kenny Pickett is not going to be the guy and that the offense is so poorly coached it cannot even line up properly, a potential tipping point that accelerates  AJRII recognizing that  the Mike Tomlin era is unlikely to get better any time soon and that serious consideration to hiring a 4th head coach since 1969 merits serious consideration, despite the hosannas of the Tomlin amen corner from Rich Eisen and other that Steelers fans need to be grateful for having a potential Hall of Fame coach regardless of his record since 2011?
Gerry Dulac

I was impressed you quoted Hemingway, but I was more impressed by your 109-word sentence. I needed to take a breath

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . What are you hearing about Pickett return ? Do you think he will return in 2 weeks,  instead of 4 weeks as being reported by some people ? Thank you very much .
Gerry Dulac
10:22
He is out a minimum of 3 weeks. And it could be longer
Steve
10:22
Was Sunday's debacle the worst Tomlin trap game ever considering what was at stake? Losing to DTR and Arizona smacks of arrogance and overconfidence by Tomlin and his team. Must every game be a gut wrenching,  clawing desperate panic attack?
Gerry Dulac
10:23
The reason I don't think so is because the Steelers aren't that good to think they can't lose to the league's bottom-feeders

Morning, Gerry. Who is one of your favorite "Newer" head coaches out there? Tomlin has lost to two Rookie head coaches so far this year and has Shane Steichen coming up next week, will he be 0-3?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
And in those games they lost by a combined 54-16

Hi Gerry. We’ve seen what a change of scenery can do for a coach. Dungy and Reid come to mind. Dungy and Reid however inherited or drafted great quarterbacks. I don’t think either would have been successful without them. Tomlin on the other hand had a great quarterback for most of his time here and won one Superbowl with Cowher’s team. I know most people outside of Pittsburgh think he’s a great coach. I think he’s a really good man but not a great coach. Do you think people on the inside feel the same way and are hesitant to endure public backlash?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Don't forget Cowher's coaches. That might have been more important
MT
10:25
Gerry, seems to me that the freshness date on HC is around 10 years, give or take, depending somewhat on one’s QB room. Your thoughts, if any?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
I just check the "Sell By" date on milk, not coaches
Sal
10:26
Happy Wednesday Gerry. In several ocassions you have stated Tomlin's job security is solid. But after all the things that have happened are happening during this season, do you see Mike's seat getting unusually hotter next year?
Gerry Dulac
10:27
It should. But he is due for a contract extension in 2024, and if he gets it that will give you the answer...and probably not one you want to hear

There’s been so much talk about the inept offense that the defense seems to get a pass on problems there. They've spent a lot of money on the defense but they are underperforming, with that 99 yard drive being the latest example. I agree with you that they still need to draft a top defensive lineman but the problems seems deeper than that. What else do they need to do such as a change in DC at the end of the season?
Gerry Dulac
10:28
That game flipped because of the defense's inability to prevent a 99-yard drive, not because the offense got stuffed at the 1

Hey Gerry! Thanks for the chats! One week, the Steelers are poised to win the AFC North, the next week they have to blow it all up! LOTS went wrong on Sunday, but the biggest were the lousy snaps from Cole and the loss of Roberts. Were they the main reasons for that dismal game?
Gerry Dulac
10:28
No. But they were contributors.

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . I was quite surprised by your effusive praise of Trubisky’ s 112 yards and a TD in your last post game analysis . Most of those  yards came in a garbage time and cardinals were already in prevent defense . How many games do you remember that Trubisky came in a relief duty of Pickett , or as a Steeler starter for that matter , and won the game ? I do not remember one such game . That’s the basic job of a back up QB . I know if he wins the game against lowly Patriots , a quarterback controversy will be started by media and short sighted fans. Thank you very much .
Gerry Dulac
10:29
I stopped reading your question at "effusive praise."

Hi, with all that is going on with the team, on the field, on the sidelines, in the lockeroom, it feels like this is a systemic problem that changing the OC or even changing the QB won't cure. It just feels like there is a lot wrong with a franchise that used to be the envy of the league. As someone who is with the team, what is your opinion. Thank you for your time.
Gerry Dulac
10:33
I think the slightly above .500 seasons in five of the past years further your point.
Colin

Hi Gerry, I watched a video from early December 2020 where you discussed strength of the Steeler's offense and how well balanced the team was, scoring 24 or more points per game (most in NFL), Ben's fantastic passer ratings, and general optimism being undefeated. We obviously struggled with the run, and then mistakes (drops, turnovers) tanked the season. Did we overreact after that season? Was Tomlin actually doing a good job with what he had, save for player mistakes?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
And save for that embarrassingly playoff loss at home to the Browns, who put up 48 points
Pete North
10:34
Do you think we’ve reached the point where the Steelers will consider drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
I sure hope not

OK, 'Stillers' fans lets see a show of hands on who wants to watch the 'Stillers/Pats game on Thursday night football or watch LAW & ORDER re-runs.

Good morning, Gerry, thank you for the chats! In Monday’s press conference, Mike Tomlin sure did come close to using the loss of Elandon Roberts as an excuse for the defensive woes. While of course the loss had an impact, we normally don’t hear it from MT, and usually get some “next man up” “one man’s misfortune…” etc. cliché. MT has seemed different (maybe even a bit lost) to me the past few weeks. Am I just reading into things or have you noticed a change in his demeanor?
Gerry Dulac
10:36
Well, I think in that instance, there is no more next-man-up. With Holcomb and Alexander already gone for the season, Roberts was the last of the newly imported  trio still standing. I think that's what he was implying
