Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 12.15.21

When is someone in the Front Office going to acknowledge there is a definite culture problem on this team?  From players taping locker room celebrations, off-field problems, on-field problems, FA's throwing tantrums to leave town, defense doing endzone celebrations when down 29-0, and now Claypools continual antics.  It seems there is no leadership from HC or Staff?

I hate to tell you, that is more an indictment of today's professional athlete and what happens everywhere around the NFL than it is a systemic problem with the Steelers. Look around, Ellen, we're on the threshold of hell.

Hi, Jerry. The Steelers have one of the five most top-heavy salary structures in the league; more money into a handful of superstars than almost anyone else. To what extent might that explain our pitifully shallow bench? "We're young" seems awfully partial. The other explanations - we can't identify and retain talent, we can't coach them up - seem even more depressing.
Gerry Dulac
11:14
It's a good explanation. As my radio colleague Dale Lolley likes to say, the middle class has disappeared from the Steelers. Top-tier players and bottom-tier players. Nothing in between.

Is it time to admit the Steelers should have kept Connor and drafted a lineman rather than Harris?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
Nope.

If the draft were held today, which positions need the most help in rounds one through three?  I say offensive line, inside linebacker, offensive line.
Gerry Dulac
11:16
You're wrong because you forgot defensive line. Their lack of attention to that position has been exposed mightily this season. There is not one young player there around which to build. That's what happens when you haven't drafted a D-lineman higher than the fifth round (Loudermilk) since 2014.

Devin Bush and Chase Claypool both displayed concerning behavior in the offseason. Devin Bush posted horrid photos of animal cruelty on social media and Chase Claypool savagely kicked someone in the head. Why was their behavior not addressed in the offseason? I understand they are rule, but perhaps their behavior is a result of an environment with ZERO consequences.
Gerry Dulac
11:18
I don't know what consequences they faced, if any, because it would be handled in-house, especially during the offseason. But I think Bush's strange posts were more troubling, if for no other reason they were there for all to see.

Biggest draft need for the Steelers in 2021?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Just told ya -- D-line. With offensive line not far behind.

Why do we always telegraph when we’re about ready to hike the ball by having the guard tap the center and waiting until there is 1 to 3 seconds left on the clock?  That seems to give an advantage to the defense.
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Not really. What else do you want them to do when operating with the silent crowd in a stadium as noisy as that one?

What are your thoughts on Ben’s performance recently? In my opinion, he leaves so much to be desired and feared at the same time.
Gerry Dulac
11:22
His performance in the past eight games -- 15 TDs, 3 interceptions, five passer ratings over 103 -- should not leave much to be desired. It should be desirable. And, to use your word, he should be feared in the fourth quarter where he leads the league in passing yards, touchdowns and completions of 20+ yards.

This may be a callous question, but is it possible that the recent focus on the mental health of athletes has enabled Tuitt and hamstrung the Steelers in his situation?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
I think it is a question a lot of people are asking.

Hi Gerry. I don't recall much about the 6-10 season prior to the Ben draft. Were the Steelers just a franchise quarterback from turning things around as quickly as they did or were more pieces needed (including coaches)? I do believe they may have had a really good defense in place. Can this Steeler team do the same? Tomlin inherited a pretty good team from Cowher. I don't know if he's ever been a part of a rebuild.
Gerry Dulac
11:26
I think you answered the question when you said they might have had a really good defense in place. They did. And they don't now. The degree to which this defense has plummeted is shocking, especially their inability to stop the run. It's like Taylor Swift forgetting how to sing a ballad.

Hi Gerry-  Assume Haden is a go. Which option gives Steelers best 11 on field.   In nickel bring 25 on and move Sutton to slot corner or bring on Norwood and keep Sutton on outside?  Provide context with answer please.
Gerry Dulac
11:29
It's nice to know you want me to provide context with my answer. Your first option is the most likely scenario.

Well I do fly to games.

Hi Gerry-  Given upswing in COVID would NFL consider postponing games or is that not an option this season?
Gerry Dulac
11:30
That has not been an option, mainly because there haven't been cases where a team or organization has had rampant positive tests this year.

Gary, any thoughts on Kendrick Green? We are giving him the benefit of the doubt because he is young and we invested a high draft pick in him. However, my review of the tape shows someone too undersized without that rotund bottom base and fast twitch reflexes to play center in the NFL. Frankly, he wasnt a very good college player and I, for one, NEVER understood the draft pick. Do we move him to guard in the offseason and look for a long term solution at center in the draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:33
Hey Arnie, I'm not qualified to evaluate what Green has or lacks, but he has struggled at times with bigger nose tackles and other times has been more than adequate. What I like about him is he plays with a nasty streak and goes to the whistle (and sometimes beyond). He's a rookie. I'm willing to give him the benefit and let the people who know better than I do to properly evaluate him after the season.

Hey Gerry! Since the Steelers are looking for DLineman. Why not try Geno Atkins?
Gerry Dulac
11:33
Geno has lingering physical issues. Why do think he's sitting out there?

11:34
Hi Gerry - how can a player not show up for work and still get paid?  Mr. Tuitt's personal issues, albeit tragic, don't seem to explain the ability to simply decide not to work.  There was an injury, but teams have protocols for that.  Have you seen this before? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:36
I probably have, but not where the situation hasn't been explained by one side or the other. This goes beyond any physical issue.

Time to get a futures bet down - who wins the AFC North?
Gerry Dulac
11:36
I don't bet. But, if I did -- Bengals.

Why no mention of Dotson this week?  Been 4 weeks and they certainly need a LG. Anything more to this situation?
Gerry Dulac
11:38
Probably. I'll check.

Hi Gerry. You think Steelers will be in complete rebuild mode next season? Do you see ant coaching changes also next season? Thank you .
Gerry Dulac
11:39
Nope. They don't use the word rebuild. But, even if they don't, what do you think this year has been with so many new starters and rookies??
Fineline
11:40
Early in season you said we needed to be patient with the o-line. It’s apparent they won’t develop enough to help in ‘21. Would you say the Steeler’s biggest mistake was going with a young unproven line with a rookie OC and position coach?
Gerry Dulac
11:41
They didn't have many options after Pouncey retired, DeCastro basically did in the summer and Villaneuva was not going to be re-signed. That's three former Pro Bowlers.... gone. No matter what you think of the coach, that move had to be made too,
