Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 1.2.19

Yes they are.

I think we need to draft inside LB's and reinforce our secondary.  Who do you think should target to be our #1 draft pick?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
Too early to tell which players, but ILB and CB are a must. If they have 7 poicks, at least 5 and maybe 6 should be defense. 2 ILBs for sure.

On a scale of 1-100, what are chances Tomlin will do anything at all to address AB's behavior?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
He will address it because he will be asked, but the curiosity it how he will handle it.

What's worse, AB's antics or Tomlin lying about it?  What would you about this mess?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
Flip a coin. I'll say this, tho -- at least they didn't play him after he refused to practice or attend meetings all week. Imagine the internal reaction if they allowed him to play, which is what AB expected when he arrived at Heinz Field. I promise you, the Steelers would have lost 24-0 if they allowed him to play, not that they were going to.

Hey Gerry - do you think Tomlin provides actual substance today during his presser?  Or do you think it will just be a string of cliches that essentially mean nothing?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
Why change now??
Jack
11:22
Gerry,  How can Tomlin explain his answers about AB if the latest reporting in accurate?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
11:22
That's what we're going to find out

11:25
Who are the current players on the roster that you believe need to take the lead and change the culture?
Gerry Dulac
11:25
That's a tough thing to do with today's professional athlete. And, this is no defense of the guy, but do you really think one guy is going to change the way AB behaves? Do you think he is going to change? I think we know that answer

I understand that Coach Tomlin will not be let go, but there has been a serious trend the past five years under his watch - lack of defensive player development (with high draft picks), losing to bad opponents, and lack of post season success. All of this with an offense that touts a HOF QB and WR and stout offensive line. Shouldn’t there be some shakeup amongst the coaching ranks?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
Something needs to be done, that's for sure. But I wouldn't lump lack of defensive player development in there so much. Watt, Hargrave and soon Edmunds are the counter to that. Now, lack of developing CBs I will give you, but that might have to do with drafting the wrong kind of guy

Hi Gerry - clearly a lack of leadership on this team.  Who does that fall more on? Coaches or players like Big Ben?
Gerry Dulac
11:27
It's a little of both. The coach is ultimately responsible everything that goes on in that locker room, good and bad.

As a fan it’s hard to watch. Does Art R finally question the direction of this franchise? We are at a crossroads and feel we are soon venturing down the definition of “insanity” expecting change from grown men like AB, Tomlin and Ben. They won’t change. How do we force a change?
Gerry Dulac
11:27
Having a couple of 6-10 seasons.

Thanks for the chat as always Ger! In your estimation, is this a team that is truly a defensive starter or two away from a super bowl?
Gerry Dulac
11:28
Yes.

Steelers fan for nearly 40yrs. Last offseason with Bell and now Brown, coupled with a horribly embarrassing collapse I'm losing my love for the Black n' Gold. PLEASE Gerry...give me a reason to be optimistic and proud for 2019??!!
Gerry Dulac
11:29
They still have a Super Bowl-caliber roster and were one defensive stop in any one of four games -- Denver, Oakland, Chargers and New Orleans -- from winning the division. ONE!!
Jason
11:29
Gerry,  What changes do you see coming with the coaching staff?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
11:30
I'm sure there will be one or two. But don't expect a major shakeup.

I think the best thing the Steelers could do is open up as much cap space as possible. What current players do you think are expendable that would help open things up more?
Gerry Dulac
11:31
Dupree is expendable at $9.2 million next year, but, as I said earlier, I don't expect them to do that because that forces them to go find another OLB high in the draft. And that's not their most urgent need right now. Marcus Gilbert would be another that fits your description.

Any Steelers that you are pretty certain will not be returning next season?
Gerry Dulac
11:32
No.
Jason
11:32
Gerry,  Chances Munchak takes a HC job?  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:32
Well, he had a pretty good chance last year and decided not to pursue. But that doesn't mean the same will happen this year
Carrie
11:32
Do you think there will be any big coaching changes in this staff?
Gerry Dulac
11:32
Maybe
Ryan
11:33
With the cap hit, I dont see any way that Brown gets traded. How do you see all of this working out? I am guessing they will find a way to continue to be a dysfunctional family for 2019.
Gerry Dulac
11:33
I agree.
Jared
11:34
Gerry, if you could only keep one of the following, who would it be? Tomlin, Brown, Ben, Bell.
Gerry Dulac
11:34
Ben is the reason this team wins. No Ben, no postseason. All the others don't even come close in importance. Mike Tomlin is a very good coach, but take away Ben and it will be the same as NE without Brady. An old coach once told me, you can't be a good painter without good paint. Ben is a good paint.
Fausto Carbone
11:35
I asked Ed a few weeks ago about how A.B was handling the fact that Juju was having such a great season, Ed said it was a good sign that he wasn't punching Gatorade coolers on the sidelines...………….maybe not such a good sign after all?  How can he be a part of this team moving forward?
Gerry Dulac
11:35
That's a very good question, one the Steelers are pondering now
Chuck in Ohio
11:35
Where would you rank stock to buy in North? Browns, Pitt, Balt, Cincy. I sadly think we are 3rd. Boy how things have changed in past year.
