Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 12.22.21
powered byJotCast
Matt from LA

What is more telling: That Ben has never been voted MVP by his teammates or that none of Tomlin's coaches have ever been directly (Arians came from the Colts and Cards) hired as a NFL head coach?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
And don't forget, Arians came to the Steelers because of Cowher, not because of Tomlin. To your point, one might be more telling, but the other is more damaging.

Hi Gerry, love your chats.  Why on earth does Matt Canada still have a job? Our offense only seems to work when we go hurry up or no huddle,  times when it seems Ben plays a more active role in deciding what plays to call. Also, why have we not given up already on the swing pass three yards behind the line and have our guy make three defenders miss because nobody stays to block for him? I know the Steelers are loyal, but this is ridiculous.
Gerry Dulac
11:18
I don't think you can cite loyalty just yet because this is his first year in the position. Look, I'm not going to defend Canada, but have you been paying attention to the play-calling by the Chargers, Vikings and Titans? Incredibly bad

11:18
What are your thoughts on Tomlin's clock manglement at the end of the first half? Shouldn't a 15 year veteran HC be a bit better?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Agreed, but I think people are overlooking that having those three timeouts for that final drive that almost resulted in a FG looked like a good move. Although using at least one against the Titans would have made more sense.

What are you hearing from Steelers sources about forward looking plan for OL?  They can’t possibly be happy with in season progress.
Gerry Dulac
11:20
They will not only worry about that after the season, they will address it. That and the defensive line -- THE two biggest weaknesses on the team
Ryan
11:20
Gerry, with Ben likely retiring and his money coming off the books wouldn't it be wise to let Haden also walk and then use the cap spice to sign a lineman or two? (Depending on who's available of course) and then if a QB they like falls too them or within a reasonable trade up range get him? We all know how much harder it is to find a QB1 than a lineman.
Gerry Dulac
11:21
That is logical reasoning. And there are three other players who cost them money who will be gone or should be gone.
Jeff
11:21
Thanks for the chats Gerry.  I read somewhere that Ben ranks in the middle with regards to important QB stats.  Safe to say he would be top ten if he had any sort of OL and running game?  Not saying he is Brady but imagine Brady's line on this team.  He has improved immensely since the beginning of the year, which cannot be said about the line.  Happy Holidays!
Gerry Dulac
11:23
It's too bad for him and the fans that his last season has to be spent behind that offensive line. People forget that he is getting beat up game after game like never before but comes back in the second half and plays his best football. You think people realize that? I can answer that -- No.

With all of the players that are likely gonna be out for the Chiefs how likely do you think it is the Steelers win? Mahomes is deadly.
Gerry Dulac
11:25
If you're missing Kelce and Hill, that's a tough combo to replace. I sure hope the Chiefs don't give us that "next man up" nonsense because there is no next man up to replace Kelce and Hill

11:25
Thoughts on the decking punting game?
Gerry Dulac
11:25
Not very good

This week it was reported the Steelers covid protocol could be an advantage.  What is different about their protocol from the rest of the team?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
I don't know what other teams do, but the Steelers have had some of their stars miss games because of Covid, too. But, during this  latest wave, they have survived better than most.
Gary Campbell
11:26
Will Bush's fear of re-injury cause him to be cut in 2022?
Gerry Dulac
11:26
No
George
11:26
Is Joe Greene right about wanting Ben back in 22?
11:27
Will Colbert still be employed by team at draft?
Gerry Dulac
11:27
I didn't hear him say that, but do you think he's a better option than what they have? He probably is.
11:28
That answer was to Joe Greene question. As for Colbert, he is under contract until after the draft.
MTScott
11:28
Do you think the Steelers will make a fair offer to Edmunds to keep him in the fold?  Like Dupree, he seems to have gotten better each year.
Gerry Dulac
11:28
It's posible.
Pistol
11:28
Is the Steelers interest in Sam Howell legit? Thanks for all of the chat and Have a Merry Christmas!
Gerry Dulac
11:28
Not sure who said that, but they have an interest in a lot of guys. Doesn't mean they will take him. That's to be determined later

If you could have one player back who left in the offseason that would most help this team, who would it be? Pouncey, Decastro, Vince, Nelson, Hilton, Bud, Feiler, Big Al? Or how about injured this year? Juju, Tuitt, Alualu? That's a lot of lost starters for this team to still be in it...
Gerry Dulac
11:29
Toss between Pouncey and Tuitt

11:29
Hi Gerry - how do you think Wormley and Loudermilk have filled in this year?
Gerry Dulac
11:29
I think Wormley has been more than solid and gets better each game.

Tomlin said a few weeks ago that doing the same thing constantly and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. All of the coaches on offense are insane then. They continue to run out there the same people, neglect the middle of the field, and be conservative until they’re forced to open up the playbook. I don’t understand it. Why haven’t they changed anything?
Gerry Dulac
11:30
I don't think he ever used that word. That is an old definition. But that didn't stop you from a funny comment

How does the coaching staff feel about Bush's play?
Gerry Dulac
11:30
Like everyone else -- not crazy about it.
JerseySteel
11:30
Hi Gerry - any of these defensive players back next year: Schobert, Edmunds, Haden?
Gerry Dulac
11:31
Maybe all. Maybe two out of three
Yates
11:31
Gerry-  Happy Holidays.  Do revised NFL protocols include minimum advance notice if they decide to move game day?  How about PG protocols on same?
Gerry Dulac
11:31
They can move the games anytime short of teams boarding their planes
