Too many thoughts for me. Mitchell will be gone. You have heard my feelings on Bell. I think they will sign an ILB in free agency and draft one on the first round.

Gerry - does no changes to the defensive coaching staff mean the Steelers feel there can be no improvement in the coaching and the weaknesses in the defense are all player related?  If so, does that portend a large number of defensive player changes before next season, or just more of the same and hope for the best?
Gerry Dulac
11:10
I don't think enough people understand or begin to comprehend what the loss of Shazier did to that defense. It was fifth in the league overall, fifth against the pass. So just tell youself there were 27 other teams who gave up more yards than and a lot more points than the Steelers.

As the defensive coordinator for the Vikings Mike Tomlin had the worst ranked defense against the pass in 2006. Now that he is so involved in the defense, what do you think he has learned since then that can give us hope for 2018 season?
Gerry Dulac
11:11
To not be last against the pass. They were 5th in the league this year.
Also, what you don't mention is I think they were No. 1 against the run and very close to the top overall.

When will coaches learn not to go into the not to lose mode when leading the Patriots in the fourth quarter?  Run,run short pass Punt. does not work.

I'll tell them

Thanks for the chat Gerry.  So, we are stuck with Tomlin for one more season.  But, if we have another failure, especially on the defensive side of the ball, in the playoffs, do you think they will finally realize it isn't going to get any better and fire Tomlin?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
I think you will be "stuck" with him longer than that, but who knows. Tampa Bay fired Tony Dungy in 2001 because he kept losing in the postseason

Gerry, what is your take regarding no defensive coaching changes? Does this have anything to do with Tomlin allegedly taking on a greater role in the defensive meetings? Thank you
Gerry Dulac
11:15
Tomlin has been taking a greater role in defensive meetings the past 2-3 years. Nonethless, I'm surprised one def coach hasn't been let go.

Fan bases, if not teams (OAK, SF), are lining up for Bell's services. Do you see him calling anyplace but Heinz Field home next year?
Gerry Dulac
11:15
I could

Should be an easy transition to Fichtner as OC...let Ben call his own plays and run a lot of no huddle?
Gerry Dulac
11:16
I don't think that's happening

Gerry, the difference that a Tom Coughlin made in Jacksonville by imposing discipline on the organization is something that a copycat league should want to emulate. Could you see the Steelers adding a head of football ops in a similar capacity?
Gerry Dulac
11:17
They have one -- Kevin Colbert. Let's just hold off on Jacksonville. One winning season should be compared to decades of success. Like Oakland this year, let's see them do it again. And again. OK???

Gerry,  What do you think the Steelers do with Stevan Ridley?  thanx
Gerry Dulac
11:17
Bye bye probably
11:18
All failures go back to the head coach. Therefore, all successes go back to the head coach. Let me enlighten y'all, you're not going to win the Super Bowl, or even go to the Super Bowl, every year. Unless you're Tom Brady of course

Is Faneca the best guard in Steelers history? Do you think he will get in? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Probably. And yes

Hi Gerry - are the headaches the LeVeon Bell brings (holdout, contract demands, skipping meeting before playoff game) worth franchising him again or let him walk/draft a RB?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
Nope
Florak

Why are you/ed and other Steeler writers always such a  Tomlin homer? Always pointing to his record as your only defense? Every year Tomlin himself is responsible for 2 to 3 LOSSES costing them either a bye, division championship, or a playoff appearance due to his poor in game management, failure to make adjustments, drama, or the team is not ready to play against inferior opponents. These are Tomlin traits year in and year out. Tomlin should have 30 more wins on his record and 2 or 3 more SB appearances if he was as good as you think. Fittipaldo is the only writer in Pitt willing to say what many fans think. And before you say who should be the coach... Why not Munchak?

I can't imagine Bell sitting out next season if the Steelers tag him again, but if he would, does that mean the Steelers would have something like 14 million dollars that they would not be allowed to spend on other players, or could they spend that on other players because of Bell not being on the team, but being tagged?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
No, because if he doesn't sign the tender, he isn't under contract. So there is no $14.5 million spent. They can spend it other ways if they choose

Gerry, William Gay at week 18 blows assignment for 40 yard Splash play. Who's blame?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
You answered your own question. Plus, 98 wasn't where he was supposed to be on that play
Ryno
11:21
What happens with Ryan Shazier's salary next season if he is unable to play? Will the Steelers still have to pay him, will they put him on some type of injured list, or will they give him some kind of financial settlement and release him?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
They still have to pay him and he still counts against the cap, just as if he had a torn ACL or shoulder surgery and missed the season.
Ryno
11:21
Gerry, is it possible that the Steelers were not playing James Harrison BECAUSE of him sleeping during meetings or going home as soon as he found out he was inactive for a game? Or did he start doing that stuff AFTER the Steelers decided to never play him? After seeing him play for New England, I can't imagine why the Steelers were not getting him on the field. He sure looks like he is still able to play.
Gerry Dulac
11:22
No. After. That is, if you want to believe a couple players

Low first round draft picks generally need to be developed. Were Jones, DuPree and Burns bad picks or are they just not being developed by poor position coaches?
Gerry Dulac
11:22
I wouldn't put Burns in that category, not at all

11:22
Gerry, should the Steelers cut Mike Mitchell and will they cut him?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
Yes and yes

Hi Gerry, thanks for the chat.  So after watching the many defensive breakdowns and "lack of communication" this season, would it be a stretch for Art Rooney to tell Tomlin "hey why dont we make a change or 2 on your defensive staff?  Doesn't appear to be a crazy idea.  What say you? Thank you sir
