Giants' Outlook '23
powered byJotCast
Anthony Franco
7:29
If they'd played around .500 for five seasons in a row, they'd still be contemplating changes
7:31
I think the '21 success put the front office in a difficult spot in that it coincided with when Zaidi was probably planning to put his stamp on the organization. Guessing they went into that season expecting to move on from Crawford and Belt and potentially reshape the pitching staff
7:32
Then all those guys had great years and the obvious choice was to run it back. Offer Belt the QO, extend Crawford, re-sign Disco
None of which really worked out
7:33
So I wouldn't say that overperfomlng burdened them with expectations, but I think it left them in a tricky spot deciding whether that kind of success was replicable if they retained a lot of those players

7:33
Any idea who the Giants may target for managing the team next year?
Anthony Franco
7:34
I got a bunch of questions like this. Sorry to dodge it but I really don't have a feel for it. Guessing the front office itself doesn't have a great idea which direction they're going yet
7:35
There are a few standard "future managers" who come up for teams every offseason: Joe Espada, Clayton McCullough, Will Venable
Dave
7:36
Luis Matos had eye popping numbers in the minors, but couldn’t put it together this season in the majors. Is he just young or is he SF Carter Kieboom?
Anthony Franco
7:37
The bat-to-ball skills played at the major league level. Bigger concern is that the defense wasn't good, which he'll need because he doesn't really have the power for a corner
7:38
Seems like a low-end regular or fourth OF profile but that's still a decent part of a big league roster. Carter Kieboom hasn't shown he's even a role player
Lefty
7:39
Because of the weak FA class, is there a possibility useful bats like Slater, JD Davis, Yaz and Flores could have some trade value? SF needs to be less slow and more athletic
Anthony Franco
7:39
I'd say all the guys you mentioned have slightly positive trade value. Davis makes sense as a trade candidate with the terrible infield market
7:40
But it's more like the deals we saw for Gio Urshela (a low-level pitching prospect) or Hunter Renfroe (two middle relievers) last winter than an overwhelming return
Rick
7:41
Your thoughts on Willie Adames?
Anthony Franco
7:42
Would be easier for me to see the Brewers making him available if there were any free agent shortstops they could subsequently sign
bacebarl
7:42
should meckler get more of a look this year? his speed definitely played and once he settled in it looked like his bat to ball skills were nice if lacking power
Anthony Franco
7:43
He's another guy who's in the Schmitt/Matos group -- open to the possibility of him forcing your hand sometime midseason but can't go into the year counting on him to play a major role
JN
7:43
If Giants miss on Belli, so they shift to Bader bounce back or let Fitzgerald have CF?
Anthony Franco
7:46
At that point I'd let Fitzgerald have it. Bader doesn't hit RHP well, they've already got Slater who can play CF and does most of his damage against lefties
Jefe
7:46
What would it take to sign Matt Chapman as a FA?
Anthony Franco
7:47
Mentioned this in one of the other team chats (Tigers maybe?) but I'm in the 5/130 range on Chapman. Tim has him around 150
Amazin
7:47
Wade Meckler had a quick ride in minors. Can you see a trade to White Sox for Tim Anderson? SF gets Luciano insurance and Sox get a dart throw for RF
Anthony Franco
7:48
I wouldn't give up Meckler for Anderson. There's a decent chance the Sox just buy him out anyways
Anthony
7:48
Rank these players from most to least likely to be wearing Giants orange and black in 2024:
Hoskins
Bellinger
Chapman
Anthony Franco
7:49
I'll go Belli, Hoskins, Chapman. Rhys seems like a guy who could just accept the QO from Philadelphia after the lost season, but he makes sense as a fit for the Giants if the Phils don't offer it
7:50
I'd like that move less if Hoskins declines the QO and signs a Conforto two-year/conditional opt-out deal, though. Wouldn't be enthused about giving up a draft choice for hopefully one year of Rhys
Jack
7:51
Who is in the starting rotation next year (including possible FAs)?
Anthony Franco
7:53
I'll assume Cobb is healthy enough to get the option picked up. Guess I'll go with Webb, Cobb, Harrison, Seth Lugo and Spencer Turnbull
OF Trade Option
7:54
could the Giants put together a trade package for Lane Thomas? Would Washington let him go for a top 10 prospect and include like David Villar/ Heliot Ramos/ Joey Bart?
Anthony Franco
7:55
Should take more than that
Quinn
7:55
Do you see the Giants signing any of the big international stars? Like Jung-Hoo Lee or Yoshinobu Yamomoto
Anthony Franco
7:56
Discussed Yamamoto already. I could see Jung Hoo Lee as a potential fit. Chance to stick in center field, could hit towards the top of a lineup
7:57
The evaluation on most players from NPB or the KBO is pretty variable, especially hitters. A lot of it depends on how teams' scouts subjectively feel about a player's ability to hit MLB-caliber velocity with regularity. There are teams that wouldn't have come anywhere close to what the Red Sox gave Masataka Yoshida, for example
7:58
So a lot will just come down to how each team's Pacific Rim scouts feel about Lee's bat, but he fits on paper if the Giants are confident in the hit tool
Bye Bye Baby
7:58
wait!! I had a question…seems like this team is stuck a bit and with the Debacle and Dodgers set, what’s the short term possibility this team is anything above .500?? Feels like they are a bit stuck for the next two-three years.
Anthony Franco
8:00
I'm not as pessimistic as you are. I wouldn't say this year's team was destined to be below .500. They entered September with a legitimate chance to grab a playoff spot
That's not a "moral victories" thing. They failed when it mattered most, and the season was a disappointment
8:01
At the same time, we're like two bad weeks away from these guys getting into the mid-80s and staying above SD and Arizona. So I don't think they're all that far away, especially if they add an impact hitter
