Hoops Rumors Draft Chat: 6/26/24

ARTHUR HILL

I think the play-in is a reasonable goal, although the West is loaded and there are at least a dozen teams expecting to be in the postseason. The Rockets can improve even more in free agency, and they'll keep star hunting with the Suns' picks they now own.

Looking like Clingan's going to fall to 7.....One more pick left...
ARTHUR HILL
8:50
It couldn't have worked out any better for Portland. They'll get the guy they wanted without giving up any assets, and they added a good young forward in Avdija. Great draft night for the Blazers. I'm surprised Clingan stayed on the board so long with so many teams pursuing him. The asking price must have been really high.

Any chance Pistons trading Holland?
ARTHUR HILL
8:54
It seems like a reach at No. 5, but I haven't heard any rumors of a trade. Trajan Langdon is already doing the unexpected in Detroit.

Who did the Hornets just get? Seems there were higher rated guys
ARTHUR HILL
8:56
Salaun has been steadily moving up draft boards for weeks, and other teams in that draft range were interested. It may take a while for him to develop, but he'll fill a need in Charlotte if he becomes the player they expect him to be.

I don't understand that pick for Portland ayton looked good at the end of the year.. Plus they have Robert Williams coming back. Someone has to go
ARTHUR HILL
8:58
Williams will probably be dealt this summer, and they may explore the market for Ayton as well. Clingan is their future at center now, and there's no need to keep them all on the roster.
9:01
Draft surprises are coming early. A lot of writers were expecting Ron Holland and Rob Dillingham to slide, and they're both off the board by No. 8.

Um. Did I already fall out of favor with Detroit?  Not sure why Detroit basically drafted another version of me
ARTHUR HILL
9:04
It looks like changes are coming in Detroit. Trajan Langdon didn't draft or sign anyone on the roster that won 14 games this season. Thompson could be expendable now.
Bunk
9:06
I really like Edey but top ten seems a little high
ARTHUR HILL
9:08
There were questions about whether Edey would be taken in the lottery. But Memphis needs a center, and the trade-down opportunities must not have been there.
Jonathan
9:08
San Antonio basically gave away a top ten pick to Minnesota. The NBA thinks this draft is as bad as we do, I suppose?
ARTHUR HILL
9:10
It's an underwhelming return for the No. 8 pick. There were thoughts that the Spurs might take Nikola Topic and give him a year to heal up from his ACL tear, but they opted for draft assets far in the future.
Hello
9:11
3 French Nationals including Asar being born in France. In the top 6 picks. Is the Draft that bad this year?
ARTHUR HILL
9:12
Maybe, but France is starting to produce NBA talent on a regular basis. They had two players taken in the top seven last year, and there are more prospects coming in 2025.

9:13
What are the chances Washington actually makes three first round picks?
ARTHUR HILL
9:15
I think they went after the 14th pick with plans to keep all three. They're not likely to find an NBA-ready player at 26, but that roster needs an infusion of young talent.
The Dream
9:16
Should rockets force a “big”trade right now just because they have a bunch of extra picks? Who do you see as best fits to target if they try and go star gazing?
ARTHUR HILL
9:19
Devin Booker is a reasonable name to target if the Suns ever decide to rebuild and want some of their picks back, but Mat Ishbia might be too stubborn to ever trade him to Houston. They like Donovan Mitchell, and they'll keep an eye on him for the future if he signs an extension with Cleveland. You never know who's going to become available. They're collecting assets so they'll be ready when the opportunity comes.
Bulls Fan
9:20
So what moves do the Bulls make to stay competitive in the East?
ARTHUR HILL
9:22
Buzelis is a nice addition. He was projected as a top five pick for most of the draft process, so the Bulls were fortunate to get him at No. 11. I would try to re-sign DeMar DeRozan and Patrick Williams and explore the trade market for Nikola Vucevic, but it's not going to be easy to climb out of play-in territory.
Go Cavs!!!
9:23
Do you think the Cavs will make a trade tonight?
ARTHUR HILL
9:25
The trade market has been slow since the draft started, although it should pick up after the lottery ends. I think the Cavs are content at No. 20. There's no one left that would fit their roster that's worth trading up for.

9:26
Why would the Nets trade into this draft when next years draft is deeper and they’re going to be terrible next year regardless?
ARTHUR HILL
9:29
To get some more young talent in place for the eventual rebuild. Similar to what they did last year with Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead, they might gamble on players who won't be on the main roster right away. Because the draft is considered so weak, they may find some late-round picks available at bargain prices.

9:30
What do the kings do tonight.
ARTHUR HILL
9:32
Devin Carter was a really nice pickup for them. I saw a lot of mock drafts where he was projected as a top 10 pick. He gives them flexibility to trade some of their other guards.
Taylor
9:34
Do you like the Dillingham-Wolves fit?
ARTHUR HILL
9:36
He brings speed and explosiveness as a lead guard, which adds another dimension to the Wolves' offense. He'll have to be protected on defense because of his size, but Minnesota has the personnel to do that. Plus he has Mike Conley to teach him how to be an NBA point guard. It's a good spot for him.
9:38
For fans of lottery teams, do you like what your team did? And for everyone, what do you think was the biggest surprise among the first 14 picks?
Bunk
9:43
Edey in the top ten and Holland in the top 5 were surprises.  I really like what my Blazers did overall today.
ARTHUR HILL
9:44
Holland was the shocker to me. He seemed like he might be the last guy in the green room, but the Pistons took a chance on him. There's no denying the raw talent. And yes, Portland had a really good night.
Dill
9:44
Dalton knecht, by going this late, is going to be one of those “older” prospects picked by a solid team that can immediately play a solid role on a playoff team, huh?
ARTHUR HILL
9:46
Jaime Jaquez last year is a good comparison, and he wound up being a first-team All-Rookie selection. Teams always need shooters, and that's a role Knecht can fill. It's easy to picture him getting regular minutes in the playoffs.
Keith
9:47
What were the Spurs doing trading the #8 pick for 2 future picks? Could have grabbed so much talent this year to help Wemby, or take Topic and wait a year for him to become healthy.
ARTHUR HILL
9:49
I don't get it either, and the picks are so far in the future that it's impossible to tell if they'll have any value. Several mock drafts had Topic going to San Antonio before he hurt his knee. It seems like taking him and giving him a year to heal would have been a better move.
Dill
9:50
Yeah the spurs trade is odd because Ant will be only 30 in 2031 so there’s a fair chance that pick is a late one.
