Hello and welcome to this panel discussion, where Marten Blankesteijn (Founder & CEO of Blendle), Greg Dybec (Managing Editor of Elite Daily), and Stefan Betzold (Managing Director of Bild Digital) are interviewed by Markus Hohmeier (Director of Publishing & Marketing, The European).
6:31
The discussion starts with Markus Hohmeier introducing the guests on the panel.
6:32
Hohmeier highlights the decreasing revenues of print media and poses the question about the impact of new technology on the same.
6:34
"We are facing similar challenges as we did 10-15 years ago during the transformation from print. The revenue is growing again. We need to learn from our experiences and focus on a complete transformation from print to new technology," opines Stefan Betzold.
6:36
Marten Blankesteijn adds that the availability of the world wide web has made it easier for the younger generation to discover newer elements of news for free.
6:37
Hohmeier takes the discussion forward, asking the panelist's views on the impact of video in the digital forum.
6:38
"I think video is going to be big for a lot of publishers across the market. I think it is a new way to publish. Videos, documentaries, sketches - there are so many ways to publish content these days," states Greg Debyer.
6:40
From a strategic point of view, Stephan adds, "We have exclusive videos produced for revenue generation. Video is very important for the business side of things. It gives us much more creativity and space. It’s a very important form of storytelling as well."
6:42
There are about 2 billion users of Snapchat across the globe. Hohmeier enquires about the relevance of the platform in the modern era.
6:43
Greg points out a very interesting aspect. He says, "Right now we are using Snapchat as a tool to look at the intricacies of various cultures. It allows for a new form of content that exists specifically for that platform. Some publishers, for example, create content specifically for Tumblr, Pinterest and many more."
6:44
Chipping in to include the social media king of Facebook into the discussion, Hohmeier talks about experimentation with written articles.
6:45
"Facebook provides good opportunities to make it look more seem less and user experience. We are experimenting with that and trying to Get the most of this platform," says Stephan.
6:46
Calling in for hot takes, Hohmeier asks for the panelists' top three platforms for interactive content.
6:47
NewYork Times for interactive long-form content and interesting editorials, "the future of journalism" as Greg says.
6:48
Taking a rather safe bet, Marten states, "My choices would be weird since I’ve not used many of them so it’s gonna be tough for me to pick any specifically because of the vastness of it."
6:49
In a fitting conclusion, Stephan points out that there are lots of people to build networks. "What is to learn, we will see tomorrow."
